Kenya’s CMC Holdings swung to a
pretax profit of 231 million shillings ($2.6 million) in its year through September, from a loss in the previous year, the group said on Thursday.Shares of CMC, which has exclusive distribution contracts for brands like Land Rover and Ford in local and regional markets, were suspended from trading in September 2011 due to a boardroom row.
It attributed the profit to efforts to cut costs in areas such as financing, which had risen to unsustainable levels in 2011. It cut bank borrowing to 4.2 billion shillings during the period
from 5.1 billion.Its auditors gave a qualified opinion on the results due to the existence of offshore bank accounts held by the company that are not contained in the balance
sheet.
“The board together with relevant authorities has
instituted investigations into this matter with a view to bringing it to a conclusion,” CMC said in a statement.It said that it had received a notice of termination of contract for the distribution of Land Rovers by the franchise holder, Jaguar Land Rover Exports Ltd, but the matter was in court after CMC challenged the decision

Container traffic through Kenya’s biggest port grew by
9.9 percent in 2012, boosted by an expansion programme, the port’s management said on Tuesday.The Indian Ocean port of Mombasa is also a bellwether for economic activity in east Africa as it handles imports such as fuel and consumer goods for Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia and exports of tea and coffee from the region.However, fears of disruption during Kenya’s presidential elections in March may hurt traffic over coming months as east African businesses seek alternative routes for their goods, port officials said.“There is growing anxiety for the assurance of a smooth flow of business along the northern corridor during and after elections in Kenya,” Gichiri Ndua, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) managing director told journalists in Mombasa.In the aftermath of Kenya’s 2007 poll, ethnic violence across the country paralysed cargo transport and some landlocked east African states found themselves short on oil and other key provisions.
Ndua said some clients were rerouting goods through Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam port, hoping to avoid what happen in 2008 when tons of cargo disappeared in transit during the post-election violence period. Much of it was lost to looting.“We cannot foretell what this year will be like because that is depended on many factors especially the elections. If we do it peacefully, then we should expect a further increase of cargo throughout to over 10 percent by the end of this year,” he added.Kenya is building a $300 million second container terminal at Mombasa to handle increased trade within the region, driven by a sharp growth in construction, vast infrastructure development and an emerging middle class.Although the new terminal is not officially open, dredging work to allow bigger vessels to dock at Mombasa port has been completed. A new deep-water berth had also become operational in 2012, boosting traffic.The port handled 21.92 million tons of cargo in the 12 months to the end of December 2012, up from 19.95 million tons handled during the same period in 2011.
Imports made up 85.5 percent of all traffic volume, “reflecting a huge imbalance of trade”, Ndua said. Total imports grew by 10.6 percent, posting 18.73 million tons in 2012 from 16.9 million tons in 2011.Exports, which included tea, increased by 9.2 percent, to 3.04 million tons in 2012 from 2.79 million tons in 2011. Container traffic went up by 17.2 percent to 903,443 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2012, up from 770,804 TEUs handled in 2011.Landlocked Uganda remains the most frequent destination of goods arriving in Mombasa, Ndua said, taking up 73.1 per cent share of the total transit traffic from the port.The east Africa nation also plans to construct a second port in Lamu, north of Mombasa, with a capacity of 23 million tonnes per year.
Kenya and Uganda said on Monday they were looking
for a strategic private investment partner to build and operate a pipeline to transport refined petroleum products between the two east African countries.The new pipeline, estimated to cost $300 million, is expected to join an existing pipeline from Eldoret, western Kenya, and ferry oil to Uganda’s capital Kampala, a distance of about 352 km (220 miles).“The pipeline will interconnect with the
existing 14-inch diameter pipeline running from Nairobi to Eldoret and should be able to transport products to and from Kampala, Uganda and Eldoret, Kenya including spur line in Jinja,” the two governments said in a joint call for bids published in Kenyan newspapers.“The project will also include a common user depot at the pipeline terminal in Kampala,” they said, adding that it would be developed under 20-year Build-Own-Operate-Transfer arrangement.Landlocked Uganda currently transports all of its fuel -
imported primarily through Kenya’s Mombasa seaport - in tankers over several hundred kilometres of road. Officials say the method is unreliable, costly and damages roads.The contract to build the pipeline from western Kenya to Uganda was originally awarded in 2007 to the east African unit of Libyan-owned petroleum firm Tamoil. The contract was cancelled in September last year after the project faced multiple delays.Both Kenya and Uganda have discovered oil reserves but production has yet to start.

Kenya Airways recorded slower growth in total

Fastjet, the first pan African low-cost carrier, today
announces that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kenyan airline Jetlink. Under the terms of the MOU fastjet and Jetlink are working together to create a joint venture which will give a platform for the launch of the fastjet brand in Kenya. The MOU is subject to a number of conditions including board and any other necessary approvals.
Jetlink is a Kenyan airline that was launched in 2004 and has traffic rights to all domestic destinations in Kenya as well as a number of regional destinations. Jetlink operations had been temporarily suspended since November 2012 whilst the company was restructured.
Commenting on the talks with Jetlink, fastjet Chief Executive Officer Ed Winter said:
‘This project represents a great opportunity for
both parties and discussions are progressing well. A joint venture between fastjet and Jetlink will facilitate the launch of the fastjet brand in Kenya within the next few months with immediate access to domestic and regional destinations. Kenya is the major economy in East Africa and launching here is
an important step towards fastjet becoming a pan African low cost airline, bringing safe, reliable and affordable air travel to more and more people. Talks are not yet finalised but we certainly envisage a combination of Jetlink’s strengths and fastjet’s interest in Fly540 creating the
optimum platform to launch the fastjet brand in Kenya.’
Speaking in Nairobi, Jetlink Chief Executive Capt. Elly Aluvale stated: ‘Following the recent successful launch of fastjet’s low cost operations in Tanzania, we are looking forward to this prospective joint venture. We believe the
partnership will be mutually beneficial and will go a long way in meeting the current demand for capacity on Kenya’s domestic and regional routes. It will also generate new traffic as passengers are attracted by low fares, made possible by fastjet’s low cost operating model.’

Fresh asparagus are rich in folates. 100 g of spears provide about 54 mcg or 14% of RDA of folic acid. Folates are one of the important co-factors for DNA synthesis inside the cell. Scientific studies have shown that adequate consumption of folates in the diet during pre-conception period and during early pregnancy help prevent neural tube defects in the newborn baby. The shoots are also rich in B-complex
group of vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), and pantothenic acid those are essential for optimum cellular enzymatic and metabolic functions. In the same way one’s arteries will clog up with the
consumption of too many double bacon cheeseburgers and chocolate shakes, the passages in your vehicle’s cooling system can get clogged due to neglect. System FunctionsThe cooling system in your vehicle is similar to the circulatory system in your body. The water pump acts like your heart, and circulates the coolant through the passages of the engine in order to wick away the heat of internal combustion. Neglecting cooling system maintenance is the vehicular equivalent of a steady diet of saturated fats. Scale and deposits
on the walls of the cooling system passages prevent the transfer of engine heat to the coolant. The cooling system can suffer a loss of efficiency due to neglect, and overheating can occur. Overheating can cause expensive internal engine damage. Yet, thanks to the miracle of modern chemistry, it’s easy to keep your cooling system passages clear and free-flowing. Open-heart surgery is not required. Long-Term ApproachJust as waiting for a heart
attack to occur before switching to salads is waiting too long, waiting until your vehicle overheats before servicing the cooling system is not
the best strategy to take. Coolant should be changed according to the service maintenance schedule requirements of the vehicle, and this is the perfect time for a cooling system flush since removal of coolant is the first step in the introduction of the coolant flush.
The coolant is replaced with the chemical flush, and any scale and deposits that have managed to stick to the insides of the passages will be cleared away in the process to bring back peak cooling system efficiency.
