As environmental issues become more pressing, there are two possible responses: forget it and hope that government and corporations will figure it out, or take action yourself.

In the "take action yourself" camp, a few individuals are leading the way. One such person in California is Ed Begley Jr.

Turning up at Hollywood events on his bicycle, Ed has been considered an environmental leader in the Hollywood community for many years. He serves on the boards of The Coalition For Clean Air, The Thoreau Institute, and the advisory board of the Union Of Concerned Scientists, among many others.

His work in the environmental community has earned him a number of awards from some of the most prestigious environmental groups in the nation, including the California League of Conservation Voters, the Natural Resources Defense Council, The Coalition for Clean Air, Heal the Bay, Santa Monica Baykeeper, and the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation.

He currently lives near Los Angeles in a self-sufficient home powered by solar energy.

    GEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN: n What role science plays in public policy? n How Congress affects the geosciences? n How to become an active citizen-geoscientist?

WOULD YOU LIKE TO: n Apply your science knowledge to public policy? n Meet with key federal science policymakers? n Attend House and Senate hearings? n Conduct research on current policy issues?

YES? Then come be an intern with the American Geological Institute’s (AGI) Government Affairs Program. Representing the geo-science community in Washington DC, the program actively works with Congress and federal agencies to foster sound public policy in areas that affect geoscientists, including water, energy, and mineral resources; geologic hazards, environmental protection, and federal funding for geoscience research and education.

AGI seeks outstanding geoscience students (undergraduate or masters) with a strong interest in federal science policy for a semester or summer internship. Interns will gain a first-hand understanding of the legislative process and the operation of executive branch agencies. They will also hone both their writing and Web publishing skills.

S U M M E R Application Deadline: March 15 AGI and the American Institute of Professional Geologists will sponsor three interns during the summer. The internship lasts 12 weeks and carries a $5,000 stipend. Starting date is negotiable based on the schedule of the successful candidate.

F A L L Application Deadline: April 15 The American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation plans to sponsor an intern at AGI during the fall semester. The internship lasts 14 weeks and carries a $5,000 stipend. Interns are strongly encouraged to obtain course credit for their work.

S P R I N G Application Deadline: October 15 The American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation plans to sponsor an intern at AGI during the spring semester. The internship lasts 14 weeks and carries a $5,000 stipend. Interns are strongly encouraged to obtain course credit for their work.

Apply online for the internship! You will need a resume with contact information for three references, a cover letter stating your science and policy interests and what you feel you can contribute to the program, and official copies of college transcripts (mailed sep-arately and postmarked by the deadline). You must be enrolled in, or recently complet-ed, a geoscience bachelor or masters degree program.
