Quality is key for wedding photosBy Darryl Gangloff

A lot of planning goes intocrafting the perfect wedding. Inthe whirlwind of vendors, con-sultants and dates, there is onepiece of the puzzle that may beoverlooked in the age of smart-

phones and social media — thewedding photographer.

“If you want professionalresults, hire a professional,” saidRandy O’Rourke of Kent, whohas been a photographer for morethan 34 years. He says he’s cap-tured memories at approximately250 weddings throughout hiscareer — and while he currentlyfocuses mainly on sports andother events, he still photographsweddings that have come to himthrough word-of-mouth.

Jennie Selfridge of Millertonstarted her own photographybusiness, Memory Catchers Pho-tography, in 2012. As a mother oftwo (Adryanna, 10, and Brayden,6), she enjoys taking photographsof infants, children, families andschool events in the WebutuckCentral School District. She alsoloves to photograph weddings.

“I get to capture their specialday for them,” she said. “I didn’thave that when I got married. One of my biggest regrets wasnot having somebody there totake photos.”

Both Selfridge and O’Rourkeoffered tips for couples whoare planning to hire a weddingphotographer.

    ConsultationSet up an in-person meeting

with the prospective photog-rapher at least six months inadvance — if your wedding is

in the prime season of late Aprilthrough October, consider in-creasing that to nine months ora full year to make sure you hirea photographer you like and thatthe date is available.

“This meeting is important tosee if your vision syncs up withthe photographer,” O’Rourkesaid. “There are a lot of differentstyles. Some couples are natural-istic, while others want formal, classic lineups.”

You should talk about yourvenue and the time of day of theceremony, so the photographercan plan for specific lighting is-sues. An engagement photo shootcan also be discussed (Selfridgeoffers a 10-percent discount on

the wedding package for coupleswho choose an engagementsession).

The hours the photographerwill work during the wedding isan important topic. Do you wantthe photographer to capture those

Wedding photographers can capture candid images that will be treasured for a l ifetime.

couples might want to schedulesome things in a certain orderto make sure the photographercan snap those important pho-tos — such as cutting the cake,

Both O’Rourke and Selfridgeemphasized that if you hire aprofessional photographer, it’sa good idea to tell your gueststo avoid posting to social mediaduring the ceremony and/or
