We’re the Church with a Warm Heart
As I sit to write this article, I am troubled by the horrors of the Boston Marathon tragedy. You and I are engaged everyday in winning people to the love and grace of Jesus Christ. And yet we are surrounded by troubled people who set off bombs, drive airplanes into buildings, and blow up vans under buildings. How do we hold on to hope when so many people have made up their minds to destroy it? Phillip Yancy, an author I have read for the last decade, made a recent comment about tragedy which helped me this week, “Tragedy rightly calls faith into question, but it also affirms faith. It is good news that we are not the random byproducts of a meaningless universe, but rather creations of a loving God who wants to live with us forever.” Every time the news goes on for hours “Helping” us to relive the pictures of terror over again, I feel so small. I feel helpless. I feel like I have no control. All are true. It calls my faith into question, but because I believe in God there is an answer to that question. If I am small and helpless and have no control… then that makes God big and powerful and in charge of all things, even those things that we do not understand. In the hurt and helplessness that you and I feel in times like these, we remember John 15:16: You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit. We are not a random act of evolution, but a chosen act of God who gives us the chance to live in him in the midst of the terror that surrounds us. Let us affirm our faith together this week in a God who gives hope to the helpless, peace and forgiveness, and rest for the weary heart. Grace and Peace, Preston

Sometimes in life we deal with things that seem far too big for us to handle. Often these things are beyond our control. Things like sickness and death, financial problems, emotional or mental problems, or any num-ber of issues may leave us feeling lost and confused. When we are faced with issues like these it is easy to see those problems as enormous walls beyond which we cannot pass. However, Paul reminds us of the power of Jesus in the book of Philippians. In chapter two we find the following, “Therefore God exalted him [Jesus] to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Fa-ther.” This passage tells us that Jesus is above everything on earth, in heaven, and even under the earth. There is nothing that is bigger than Jesus. Nothing. He can overcome any problem we are facing, or give us his peace and love to get through it. Turn to him for your comfort, and he will give you rest.
Blessings,
Micah

Fried Chicken Sunday
Come one! Come all! Make plans now to stay after church for a special Sunday celebra-
tion on June 2. School’s out for the summer so it’s an END-OF-SCHOOL BASH for the kids and
teachers! It will be Promotion Sunday in Sunday school classes for the children and youth. It
will also be a Casual Sunday, so you are encouraged to dress down and be comfortable.
Lunch will consist of fried chicken furnished by the church, and everyone else will be
invited to bring a favorite dish for the pot luck luncheon. Adult Sunday school class members
will be encouraged to bring a specific type of food which will be “assigned.” Otherwise, just
bring a dish you enjoy sharing. Hardy cooks are famous for delectable dishes!
LET’S KICK OFF THE SUMMER WITH WORSHIP, FOOD, AND FELLOWSHIP!
