Important Summer InformationWith summer hours, vacations and other schedule changes, we want to make sure you know how to reach us for urgent matters.
If there is a death:
1. The first call should be to the funeral home. They know how to reach the clergy, etc.
2. If death is imminent and you need clergy, the rabbi’s cell phone number is on his voice mail message at extension #14. If he is on vacation, further instructions will be available.
3. If you just want to notify us of a passing, or have an announcement sent to the congregation, please email: [email protected]. This goes to multiple people to cover anyone on vacation.
4. When we send notices of a passing, we prefer to take the information directly from the obituary to avoid errors. If you have that available, please forward to [email protected].
If there is a crisis that needs immediate clergy attention, please call Rabbi Michael’s extension #14. If he is on vacation, further instructions will be on his voicemail.
Otherwise, please call the office during regular business hours; Monday through Thursday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Fridays 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Please note that during the summer, the phones will be on service between the hours of 1:00 and 3:00 pm. You may dial the extension of the person you would like to reach when the voicemail message begins. If you are calling about a death during business hours, please call funeral home first. If you are calling about a death during 1:00 and 3:00 pm, dial Barri Stein, extension 11 or Marla Gay, or if it is a Monday, leave a message at extension #10 for Marylou and she will call you back after 3:00 pm.
All staff and clergy extensions are listed on page 30.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Have a wonderful summer,
The Staff and Clergy at CSH

Shemirat Lashon - Being Careful With Our Speech
(Submitted June 10)
In March of this year, House Speaker Paul Ryan lambasted the vicious tone of American politics. "When passions flare, ugliness is sometimes inevitable. But we shouldn't accept ugliness as the norm," Ryan told an invited audience of congressional interns on Capitol Hill. "If someone has a bad idea, we tell them why our idea is better. We don't insult them into agreeing with us," he said. "We don't resort to scaring you, we dare to inspire you."
At a time when the challenges facing America seem as great as ever, the tenor of our national political debate has deteriorated into ugliness, nastiness, and insults. Rather than debating ideas, too often we hear about character attacks. As bad as the primary season has been, US News & World Report sub-titled a May article, “Think the primary season was ugly? With Trump versus Clinton in the general election, it's about to get much, much worse.”
I worry over how this national tenor will influence our community, both in the broader North Shore and within the Jewish / Shirat Hayam community. The increase in anti-Semitic and hate speech (see the June 2 Jewish Journal) is correlated with increasing levels of hateful, disrespectful speech on the national level. We must all continue to work within our schools and local communities to remove anti-Semitic and hate speech.
Within our Jewish and Shirat Hayam community we have an even greater responsibility for the tone of our interactions, as we are the initiators of our speech. The “ugliness and insults” to which Speaker Ryan referred are detrimental to the thoughtful exchange of ideas and persuasion through reason that these times require.
Judaism has a powerful tradition of debate. The schools of Hillel and Shammai are well-known for their disagreements. Nevertheless, even when by their own legal ruling the other’s decisions weren’t “kosher,” they maintained a willingness to marry each other and eat at each other’s tables (Mishna Yevamot 1:4). They put the ideal of communal unity above their disagreements. They remained one society.
For us to remain one community, a community that looks forward to seeing each other at Shabbat and family simchas, at the JCC and at Stop & Shop, we must be careful with the tenor of our language during this presidential campaign and beyond. We must be self-aware to consciously rise to the challenge of debating ideas, rather than stooping to attacking the character of those who oppose our views.
May we maintain the spirited tradition of debate within Judaism. May we remain committed to pursuing the truth. And like our great-great-great-ancestors Hillel and Shammai, may we remain respectful in our discourse and maintain the fact, that at the end of the day, we are one people.
Happy Fourth of July.
Rabbi Michael

Open Your HeartsAs the summer begins and many of us ease into a lighter schedule, I would like to take a moment to reflect upon the previous year. 2015-2016 was busy, yet incredibly fulfilling. As you all know, last summer, I gave birth to my daughter Carmel. Raphael, Ariel, and I feel so blessed to have this incredible child in our lives who, believe it or not, is now walking.
At CSH, I have had the pleasure of welcoming in and working with three new colleagues this year: Rabbi Michael, Diane Levin, and Janis Knight, all of whom have been powerful additions to our community.
I have ushered many of you through several of life's events; officiating at baby namings, b'nei mitzvah, and even funerals. Not nearly enough weddings... we should work on that.
Finally, as I look back at this past year, I remember the music that engaged you: that made you laugh at our Purim celebration, dance at our Pesach Seder, shout "woooooo!" at our Matisyahu concert, and cry at our Shabbat Olam, renewal and healing services.
Music is such a powerful tool. It helps to open our hearts, to connect us to our past, and to connect us to God.
This summer, we will have three Kabbalat Shabbat services outdoors, on July 29, August 26, and September 9. These services will be kid-friendly, spiritual, musical "happenings". Bring a picnic dinner, bring yourselves, and bring friends. Locations will be announced soon.
As I look forward to the exciting year ahead, I encourage you all to take advantage of the heart-opening and community-building experiences we provide here at CSH.
Have a great summer!
Cantor Elana
Do You Know Someone Who Is Struggling Financially?
CJP is leading an initiative to provide comprehensive support for individuals and families in our Greater Boston Jewish community who are in, or at risk of, severe financial hardship. With support from generous donors and in partnership with our Jewish social service agencies, we are able to collectively address immediate needs — like getting dinner on the table and keeping the heat on in the winter — as well as provide services that lead to greater stability, such as job search support and mentors for children.
Do you know someone who has struggled to pay rent? Had to choose between buying meals and paying for medical bills? Too many people in our community have to make these difficult choices every day. In the past three years, CJP and our partner agencies (Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Jewish Family Service of Metrowest, Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters, Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly, Jewish Vocational Service and Yad Chessed) helped more than 3,800 members of our Jewish community navigate their options to get support, find jobs and gain access to food, financial assistance and utilities.
We believe many more people are in need, but asking for help is very difficult. CJP and our partner agencies are here to provide resources and help turn things around.
By calling the CJP warmline (1-800-CJP-9500), individuals and families in need are connected with a compassionate, experienced social worker who can connect them with the full spectrum of services available to our Jewish community and the support needed to move forward. You can also learn more at raiseyourhand.cjp.org.

Who Knows Ten?
This question from the song we sing after the Passover dinner reminds me of how we celebrated our son Alex’s 10th birthday. I packed him up along with four friends and we took off for a “boys adventure” in western Massachusetts full of bowling, board games, hiking and roughing it together. I remember thinking at the time how grown up these boys were—they were well beyond those challenging early childhood years and had their own personalities, interests and skills. They were active, curious, athletic and eager to master new areas in life. Their comfort with the Hebrew language and religious observance had already surpassed my own (low bar!) and I couldn’t help but feel they were well on their way in life.
Except for almost losing two of them on a hike, it was a successful weekend, but as I consider it now, how little did I know then of what they would go on to accomplish in high school, college and beyond? At 10, they were only partially complete and had lots of room and time ahead to grow to their potential. From what I know of them, they are very different in many ways today than they were on that trip.
This is a bit how I feel about CSH. We have been born and nurtured these first ten years, have had an impressive growth spurt, have stumbled a bit along the way but have yet to reach our full potential. So what might we look like at full maturity? USCJ (United Synagogues of Conservative Judaism) is helping our Board of Directors, along with our clergy and senior staff, look at what steps we need to take next to move us towards what they consider a thriving synagogue. As part of this effort, we are asking all our congregants to participate in a survey of where you perceive we currently are as measured by their 22 attributes in 7 foundational practice spheres. It is designed to take only a few minutes of your time and will be an invaluable resource for the leadership as we plan for the coming year. If you did not receive a survey link by email, please contact the office so you can be part of this unique opportunity. This is a chance for your voice to be heard in a constructive way, so don’t miss out!
The last song we sing at the Seder tells the story of the two zuzzim (goats) that ran into all sorts of tsouris —clearly they didn’t pay attention to planning ahead. We don’t want to make the same mistake.
L’shalom,
Howie

Angels Among Us
The Talmud says that for every blade of grass, there’s an angel bending over it, whispering “Grow, grow!” Every child in the world deserves a similar angel. That’s where educators come in. Perhaps facing a labor shortage of available angels, G-d created teachers.
I’d like to introduce you to some angels right here in our Shirat Hayam community – unique individuals who are each role models of caring and leadership. Two are professionals in the field of education; and two are leaders in character, teaching us all by the shining example of how they live their lives.
First, please meet Cheryl Schwartz. What, you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Cheryl yet? Come along, let me introduce you to her. A long-time member of our congregation and formerly the co-director of our Center for Jewish Education, last month Cheryl assumed her role as Director of the Center for Early Education (CEE). Prior to that, Cheryl had been a beloved teacher in our preschool for many years, and before that was the Preschool Director at Temple Israel. Cheryl brings a wealth of Jewish and early education knowledge, with the ability to foster a nurturing, safe environment for children. Known for her warmth and caring, Cheryl brings continuity and a proven commitment to supporting our CEE families.
The newest addition to the Shirat Hayam family is Janis Knight, our recently installed Director of the Center for Jewish Education (CJE). Locally grown talent, Janis grew up in Marblehead and attended Hillel Academy, as well as Hebrew school at Temple Emanu-El. Janis earned her bachelor's degree in Near Eastern & Judaic Studies at Brandeis University, then later her graduate degree from the Hornstein Program for Jewish Communal Service, after a stint in the corporate world. With a uniquely creative and innovative approach to education, she has been a congregational director, educator, teacher and youth group leader in Jewish communities all over the US, from Orlando, FL, to Ventura, CA. In the few weeks since she came aboard, our professional team has enjoyed her great sense of humor, warmth, and keen insight. We’re certainly thrilled that we were able to entice her to return from her travels across the US to the North Shore where she was raised. Meet-and-greets in August for our CJE families, kids, and congregants to get to know Janis will be announced shortly. We can’t wait for you all to meet her.
The other angels are not officially teachers yet – they’re not even out of high school yet. Children of Shirat Hayam congregants, their brave actions have made them leaders in our community and honorary teachers by example. As reported by The Marblehead Reporter, Averi Kaplowitch, daughter of Scott and Melissa Kaplowitch, and Olivia Schauer, daughter of Cory and Rachel Schauer, were honored recently at the New England Anti-Defamation League’s Essex County Law and Education Day, thanks to their courage in standing up to anti-Semitism in their school. Seeing an anti-Semitic picture posted on social media, these two girls spoke up, breaking the silence that too often surrounds such incidents of bigotry, and demonstrating courage and character that set examples not only for their peers but for adults across the North Shore. Standing against injustice and speaking out against hate have been Jewish values since ancient times. In the words of Torah, “Justice, justice shall you pursue!” (Deuteronomy 16:20). Thanks to these young women for teaching us how to stand tall.
Diane

Outdoor Summer Fun has begun! Our children are outside every day, enjoying the sun, the sprinklers, the pools, and each other! We always have room for more, so if you know of a little person who just needs some fun, or a mom who needs a little time off, please let them know that our doors are open. In addition, we still have some spots available for our fall programs.

North Shore Teen Initiative ~ NSTI’s Adam Smith Receives Prestigious International FellowshipNorth Shore Teen Initiative (NSTI) is pleased to announce that its Executive Director, Adam Smith, has been selected as a 2016 Schusterman Fellow.
Adam was selected from a wide range of highly qualified candidates who see Jewish organizational leadership as an important way to create transformational change. He joined Jewish leaders from five countries in North America, Israel, Europe, Australia and South Africa, to take part in an intensive training institute.
As a Fellow, he will take part in professional development experiences designed to gain leadership skills, form a strategic network of peers (beyond his cadre of North Shore and Boston based peer network) and maximize his potential for taking on a critical leadership role in the Jewish community.
Lynn Schusterman, founder and co-chair of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, said, “The Fellows are diverse in their interests and passions, yet they all see Jewish organizational leadership as a pivotal way to create positive change in the world.”
You can learn more about the Fellowship and the Fellows at www.schusterman.org/schusterman-fellowship.
NSTI is pleased to support Adam as he takes on the challenges of the Schusterman Fellowship and look forward to the benefits for the organization and the North Shore communities it serves. http://nsteeninitiative.org/
Shalom Everyone!
I was given a “hall pass” so that I didn’t have to write my article for the Wave during my first week here, but I do want to at least let you know that I am here, I am working hard and would love to meet you. Please stop by my office (right in front of Marla’s) and say “Shalom!”
I will be contacting the CJE families later in the summer with more specific information about their children’s classes and the upcoming school year. Billing and automatic re-registration will be happening in July and you should receive an updated medical/emergency form during that period, as well. Several “meet & greet” parlor sessions will be taking place and I hope very much to see you at one of them in July or August.
I would love to hear any thoughts, concerns or ideas you have for the CJE and for Jewish education in general in our synagogue. What are your dreams and hopes as we move into a new year together? I can be reached at [email protected] or at my direct line: 781-346-6075.
I will soon be reaching out to kids who are interested in becoming or returning as madrichim in the school. I also want to hear from students who have completed the program to hear their thoughts and suggestions as we move ahead.
Enjoy your summer!

Recharging My Batteries
This summer, I have decided to cut back my hours and will be working on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays only, for the months of July and August. There are a lot of wonderful things happening in my life and I need the extra time to enjoy them. My daughter is getting married the end of August, and for some crazy reason, we decided to remodel our kitchen and landscape our yard before that. So you see, it’s really ALL good things. My life is truly blessed.
I want to let you know that even though I won’t be here on Shabbat, I have turned the greeting over to the capable hands of Bea Strome, Merle Sidell and Natalie White. If you have any questions for me, please get in touch with me mid-week.
If you have friends who need information about Shirat Hayam and are considering membership, I will be happy to talk with or meet them while I’m here. At the end of August, I will be back full-time, and it will be full speed ahead with High Holy Days and all the wonderful programs we’ve been planning. Stay tuned!
In the meantime, I wish you all a safe and glorious summer.
Enjoy!

Events & Facility
We recognize several “Year-End” defining dates here, such as December 31, Rosh Hashanah and April 30 (end of CSH fiscal year), but my barometer for the “Year-End” is our final B’nei Mitzvah and the end of the regular school year. The custodial staff and I can finally take a breather and regroup and access the cleanup needed following a busy year of simchas and programs. It’s been a wonderful year and I hope you’ve had the chance join us for one or more of our events. I feel fortunate to be working with a dedicated group of maintenance staff whose commitment to Shirat Hayam and willingness to do whatever is required for us to succeed is so evident. We have three full-time workers here, Gus, Eridania, and Yanira, in addition to 4 other maintenance workers on Shabbat. Gus, Eridania and Yanira have all been with us for many years and are real assets to our organization.
Looking back on the year, we’ve celebrated many simchas and reflected on the many sorrows. We were so happy to share the many anniversary celebrations, birthdays, auf rufs, baby namings and more with you and your families. We are grateful for your ongoing support and donations to our many funds. However, I want to thank you in particular for those donations to the Kiddush Fund and the many Shabbat Café sponsorships that enabled us to continue providing our community Shabbat Café that so many enjoy. Thank you for those “in honor of”, “in memory of”, “ in appreciation of”, and “speedy recovery to” donations. Our congregants and visitors continue to feel the overwhelming sense of community, celebration, and comfort in our lunches.
Looking forward to the summer and “my new year” (September 2016—the start of school), we hope you will continue to share your simchas and even sorrows with us. Let us celebrate with you and also support you at your time of need. Our daily minyanim allow those who are in mourning or just observing a yahrzeit a place of comfort. Aliyot are available during Monday and Thursday minyanim and on Shabbat if you have a yahrzeit or anything to celebrate. Feel free to contact me, Rabbi Michael or Cantor Elana, if you need assistance with this.
I would be remiss without thanking my amazing volunteer crew who are in the kitchen on Fridays helping prepare our delicious Shabbat lunch: Arlene Leventhal, Rhonda Preman, Charlotte Fine, Janice Levine and Laurel Dolan.
I look forward to seeing you all soon but, if I don’t, have a great safe summer!

Religious Life - Why Minyan Matters
In the ten years of its existence, Shirat Hayam has always been proud of the fact that it has endeavored to provide its members and the community with 2 minyans each day to allow people to pray and provide a communal setting in which to say Kaddish for those in mourning or observing a Yahrtzeit. A minyan requires at least 10 adult Jews and it is a mitzvah to help make a minyan. It has been a staple of Judaism for one to say Kaddish for a deceased parent for 11 months and other family members for 1 month, and we as a community are there to support our fellow Jews in this meaningful responsibility.
Our morning minyans meet at 7:30 AM Monday through Friday and 9 AM on Sunday. The evening minyan meets at 7:00 PM Monday through Thursday and at 6:00 PM on Sunday.
The morning minyan has a wonderful and dedicated group of “Minyanaires” who have been able to provide a minyan almost every morning for the past 10 years.
This cannot be said for the evening minyans, which have had much difficulty in providing the quorum of 10. Our service lasts about 20 minutes and your presence is all that is required. I am asking you to think about fulfilling this wonderful opportunity for you to help someone in our community who wants to pay respect to their departed family member and reaffirm their belief in God.
The Religious Life Committee considers the reinvigoration of the evening minyan as one of its most important tasks. We will be calling on all our members to help in fulfilling this goal. If you have any questions or ideas that would help lead to our success, please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected].
Shalom,
Alan Sidman

We are very fortunate to have the above minyannaires attend regularly. However, please know that making a minyan twice a day is a challenge.
Please consider helping to make a minyan - once a week, once a month or whenever you can. Those needing a minyan to say kaddish would greatly appreciate it.

Chesed Committee Nancy Sarles, Chair
Shalom,
Please join our Chesed Committee to assist our congregation members at times, both urgent and ongoing, with the generous energy of our congregation.
Chesed is our opportunity to give and receive a helping hand. Please volunteer for as little as a few hours a year to care for the needs of our members.
Chesed “Reach Out” program is to assist in emergency situations with meals, rides, child care or Shiva. Chesed “Reach In” program is to address our members’ more ongoing needs such as a phone call, a visit, a meal, a ride to services, a new member buddy, new parent outreach, or simply being in touch and lending a helping hand.
I invite you to email me with your name, email address, and phone number where you can be called on to help.
As a Chesed Committee volunteer, there are no meetings. All communications are by email and phone, when needed.
Please call CSH if you have any needs we can help with.
With lovingkindness,
Nancy Sheena Sarles

WHY? Each year tons of clothing and textiles are dumped in the trash, costing residents money. When you donate or recycle clothing, your green efforts help the environment and everyone saves money.
HOW? WHERE? Donate your clothing to a reputable charity or visit the SMART website www.SMARTasn.org to find out where donation bins are located in your area by typing in your zip code in the “Find a Recycling Location” section. All clothing and textiles in ANY condition that are clean and dry can be recycled.
WHAT? ACCEPTABLE ITEMS: All types of used clothing, footwear & household textiles. Items such as: shirts, pants, sheets, drapes, pillows, handbags, belts, soft toys and footwear.
NON-ACCEPTABLE ITEMS: Carpets, rugs, mattresses, bric-brac, oil rags, wet or mildewed articles.

SMART (Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association) and CTR (Council for Textile Recycling) invite you to Donate, Recycle, Don’t Throw Away.

information!
The CSH clothing drive has become a steady source of income for Shirat Hayam, while it benefits the community - local and globally. CSH is paid by the weight of the load, so those heavy shoes and drapes you want to get rid of... bring them over! In addition to clothing and shoes in any condition, you may include decorative pillows, backpacks, purses, belts, hats, bed linens and stuffed animals... it’s not just clothing.
The clothing collection bin is the beginning of a journey into the world of Textile Recycling. The vast majority goes to the used clothing market that supplies affordable clothing, shoes, accessories and household linens to both domestic and developing nations. What cannot be used as wearable clothing is turned into industrial wiping rags. If the material is unsuitable for wiping rags, it gets ground up into tiny fibers that are used for insulation, soundproofing and stuffing. The clothing, shoes and accessories are going to the very same markets that all other charities and clothing collectors go to. The Massachusetts Secretary of Environmental Protection announced a public relations campaign to encourage people of Massachusetts to donate or recycle their clothing, shoes, household textiles and accessories.
So you see, none of it goes to waste. This program has a multi-tier benefit to us, our neighbors, and our global community. Thank you for contributing to its success. Please tell your friends that our bins are always open. Remember CSH when cleaning out your closets!!
Tax receipts are available at the front desk.
Thank you.

SAVE THE DATESUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11
Lauren Katz, winner of ABC’s Great Holiday Baking Show Lauren will be coming to CSH to teach us how to make Apple and Honey Bee Cookies - just in time for Rosh Hashanah!
We invite children with their parents and/or grandparents (their own or borrowed) to join us on Sunday morning, September 11th. Details coming soon!
Lauren Katz, Baker Lauren is a stay at home mother of three with a background in fine art. She is a completely self- taught baker and credits her mother’s lack of culinary skills as one of the main reasons she took up the hobby. Lauren showcases her artistic personality while baking with her elaborate and finely detailed decorations. A self-described perfectionist, she is constantly challenging herself to come up with bigger and better bakes. When not in the kitchen, Lauren loves pottery, exercising, and reading. For the holidays, Lauren loves hosting her family and impressing them with her beautiful and delicious creations.
