May Is Mental Health Month!
Why is it so important to discuss things like mental health?
These reasons below indicate that it’s time to bring mental health
to the forefront of our conversations and efforts to decrease the
stigma around mental health issues:
-One in four adults – approximately 26% -- is living with some
form of mental illness.
(That means it is likely that you or someone you know is dealing
with an aspect of their emotional wellbeing.)
-The most common mental health conditions for adults are
anxiety disorders and depression.
-Depression is the leading cause of disability in the world.
-Making it okay to TALK ABOUT mental health makes people
feel empowered to seek help and TREAT mental health.
You can save a life by showing you care.
1. Ask “are you okay?” 2. Listen and ensure their safety.
3. Connect to resources, such as your workplace Employee
Assistance Program or community resources. If you think they
need immediate assistance, encourage them to text
“HOPELINE” to 741741 or call 1-800-273-8255.
4. Follow up by asking “are you okay?” again later.
If you need a place to start your own discussion, please feel free
to reach out to me, your Community Nurse Activator or your
Primary Care Provider for help in figuring out your next steps. To
schedule an appointment, call 24/7 Nurse On Call at 1-800-528-
7883. Appointments are available at the Wellness Center on
Thursdays from 11-1 pm
and at the Bellin Algoma Clinic on Tuesdays from 8-11 am.
One conversation could save your life! All visits are confidential.
Show you care by participating in any of the supportive mental
health activities this May, throughout the Community of Algoma!
Invite a friend to join you!
Best of Health,
Nurse Jody

Taking a mental health screening is one of the quickest and easiest ways to determine whether
you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. Mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety, are real, common and

Lets challenge your brain a bit
1. Say the days of the week backwards, then in alphabetical order. (Speak other
languages? Try doing the same in Spanish, French, Mandarin…)
2. Say the months of the year in alphabetical order. Easy? Well, why don’t
you try doing so backwards, in reverse alphabetical order.
3. Find the sum of your date of birth, mm/dd/yyyy. Want a tougher mind
teaser? Do the same with your spouse’s or best friend’s date of birth (without looking
it up…) 4. Name two objects for every letter in
your first name. Work up to five objects, trying to use different items each time. 5. Look around wherever you are and, within two minutes, try to find 5 red
things that will fit in your pockets, and 5 blue objects that are too big to fit.
