Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent
ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT:
Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ
Dr. William Willimon, a former bishop of N. Carolina, described his experience when he went fish-ing with his children at a fabled spot in North Carolina. On the way, he lost directions to the spot. He began to wonder where they were going and if they would ever find their way home again. “We’re on quite a journey,” he said to the children. “No,” corrected one of the children from the back seat of the car. “We’re on an adven-ture.” “What’s the difference?” Dr. Willimon asked, as they made yet another turn down a road. The child ex-plained, “Well, a journey is when you know where you’re going, but an adventure is when you don’t know where you’re going, but you go anyway.”
The youngster pointed out the difference between the journey and adventure. One could say that life is more an adventure than a journey. Most of the time we don’t know where we are going, but we go anyway. Life is full of uncertainties and subjected to interruptions, contingencies, and changes, so that we never know for sure what any given day may bring.
It was like the first Korean immigrant who came to Honolulu many years ago. December 22, 1902, the first group of Korean immigrant boarded the S.S. Gaelic in Inchon, Korea. Their destination was Honolulu, Hawaii, in order to become workers in the sugar plantations. They were mostly young people seeking their fortunes. Yes, there was the excitement of travel, adventure and opportunity, but there was the fear of the un-known and worry about their loved ones they left behind. But I assume that it was an adventure rather than journey for them.
What a wonderful occasion to celebrate 110 years of ministry of Olive UMC on September 10, 2017. It was founded by the first Korean immigrants and their descendants will remember their dedication. They will celebrate the present and envision tomorrow with grateful hearts.
Come and celebrate with them on September 10!

MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT LAY LEADER Greetings, Brothers and Sisters in Christ of the Hawaii District United Methodist Church!
Summer vacation has ended for most, and students are back in school. Commuter traffic is
heavy, and people are back on a regimented schedule. I hope that you all had time to rest and enjoy the
summer with family and friends and are now rejuvenated with new energy to grow and learn. No matter
your age or occupation, there’s always room to grow and learn, right?! As a follower of Jesus Christ, growing in and
learning about our faith and Christian discipleship is a lifelong process. Praise God!
As the Hawaii District Lay Leader, I feel called to help the Laity of our District support Bishop Grant Hagiya
and his vision and call to mission for our local churches. The underlying foundation for our churches is our belief in the
risen Christ Jesus. World Peace, Social Justice, Christian Action…all begin with. “God in Jesus Christ through the Ho-
ly Spirit”, is what Bishop Hagiya identifies as the “Spiritual Grounding” for his vision. I hope the local church Lay
Leaders and Assistant Lay Leaders will join in support of programs at the district and local church level that equip con-
gregations with a deeper relationship with God and compassionate understanding of living out our Christian faith.
I hope to use the Bishop Hagiya’s vision as the basis for my future Lay Leader Ka Leo Mekokiko articles, as I
see its relevance, agree that generations are moving further from God, and recognize God’s guidance in this vision to
transform the world. The Bishop offers the following guidelines for local churches to consider. (There’s more to
come!)
Local Church recommendations:
+ Emphasize the spiritual quest that people are going through.
+ Provide a safe space for people to ask their deepest questions of meaning, purpose, and God.
+ Provide relevant platforms for spiritual quests.
Let’s prayerfully consider these topics and work together to offer programs to our congregations and perhaps
the “on-the-fence” people in our communities. Let’s work with our pastors and the Hawaii District Leadership Team to
recommend programs for our local churches. If the programs are plausible and do-able, we may be able to request re-
sources from the Conference. Again, this is just the beginning and we must be diligent and intentional to be successful.
I close with Ephesians 3:20-21: “Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abun-
dantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for-
ever and ever. Amen.”
May the Peace of Christ dwell in you all,
Lynn Owan

Ewa Beach UMC: Food Bank By Chuck York, Lay leader
Ewa Beach UMC has a food bank that we have operated for many years. Our food bank is open on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. On the days that our food bank is open, we also serve breakfast to the folks who use our food bank. Most of our clientele is retired people on a fixed income, although there is also a goodly number of homeless people from Hau Bush Park, which is fairly
close to our church. We purchase the food we distribute from Hawaii Food Bank. The food we distribute is mostly non-perishable things. We depend on offerings to fund our food bank. During the past couple of years our clientele has dramatically increased and we now serve about 200 families. In order to better serve our ministry, we are seeking donations, both non-perishable food and monetary. Any and all donations will be truly appreciated. The contact point is Chuck York, cell phone 551-4781.
