Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent

ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT:

[Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ]

We are in the midst of summer. I hope everyone is enjoying your time with your loved ones in this summer time, including physical resting and spiritual empowering.

Recently, the Hawaii district sponsored the Ohana Conference for the Asian and Pacific Clergy-women on July 9-11 at Christ UMC. I deeply appreciate all of you who were part of the service or on the serving team for the conference for our clergy sisters.

I had much privilege and joy to preach at the closing service at the convocation on July 11. This opportunity provided me a time to reflect on the women’s leadership not only in the Bible, but also in our history. I thought about Ruth, Deborah, Esther, Mary and Martha. There are numer-ous women in the Bible who answered God’s call in their lives and served their missions or minis-tries for God.

When I looked back to our recent history, I realized that there are also many women who an-swered the call of God and showed the love and grace of God in their actions. For example, Rosa Parks refused to move further back at the designated colored section when the bus became crowded with white riders. Her act became a defining moment in the civil rights movement and an inspiration to leaders in that struggle that has not yet ended.

Mother Teresa’s life also speaks strongly on following Jesus. Her dedication and sacrificial love showed how to follow Jesus. She served poor people in the slums of Calcutta and became a friend to marginalized people. She served them as though she were serving Jesus himself. Even though she passed away, her life still speaks truth about us. She told us so much about the true meaning and purpose of life.

Mrs. Mary Scranton was the first female foreign missionary to Korea who was sent by the Wom-en’s Foreign Missionary Society of Episcopal Church in 1885. She began work to provide Christian education to women and children, and founded Ewha Girl’s School in 1886. It’s now known as Ewha Women’s University. In 1886 Korean society, women were not even recognized by their own names. They are called only by someone’s daughter, sister, or mother. Mary Scranton’s teaching and gospel helped them to discover who they were and where they belonged. She made new hori-zon to Korean women in the 19th century.

As I reflected on those women who answered God’s call, I also realized that it is not only women in the Bible or in our history, but we are all called to do his mission in the 21st century. I hope you discern your call and serve the kin-dom and God’s people today.

With my aloha to you all!

Grace & peace,

Rev. Se Hee Han Hawaii District Superintendent

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSOCIATE DISTRICT LAY LEADER

“AS WE JOURNEY” “May our journey lead us into a new place, a place where new life

and new beginnings are waiting to be discovered.”

Aloha and E Komo Mai!

As the church continue its journey toward perfection, the teaching of John Wesley resonance through-out the connection.

John Wesley’s quadrilateral continue to lead the church to perfection.

Scripture, the bible is the primary source for Christian belief and life.

Tradition, the history of the church with all of its high and low moments are the guide-post for the

journey.

Reason, is truly a good gift from God and faith come from hearing the words of God’s wisdom.

Experience, the presence of God is made known as we continue our journey in faith.

“AS WE JOURNEY” it is with great joy we sing “Rule of Life” the lyrics written by John Wesley. Do all the good you can, by all the means you can. In all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.

“AS WE JOURNEY” the path that is before us, we are reminded by the “Three Simple Rules” pen by a Wesleyan Way of Living.

Do No Harm, by avoiding evil of every kind, especially that which is most generally practiced.

Do Good, by being in every kind merciful after their power; as they have opportunity, doing good

of every possible sort, and, as far as possible, to all.

Stay in Love With God, by attending upon all the ordinances of God.

…...Discipline, 2004; 103

“AS WE JOURNEY” to be an inclusive church, all are welcome.

May the path of “A Way Forward” be the direction leading the church into a place where new life and

new beginnings are waiting to be discovered.

May our journey embrace our Annual Conference Vision Statement:

“Inspiring the world as passionate followers of Jesus Christ so all may experience God’s life-giving love.”

I am excited to embark “A Way Forward” as a means to perfection embracing John Wesley’s quadrilateral, singing “Rule of Life,” and adopting “The Three Simple Rules” in my life. What about you? May our journey be filled with hope for the best is yet to come.

One in Christ, Francis Fukumoto, Hawaii District Associate Lay Leader
