February is American Heart Month. Our focus this month is teaching children healthy

habits that can last through adulthood. According to the American Heart Association, a

heart-healthy diet from an early age lowers cholesterol and if followed through

adolescence and beyond, should reduce the risk of coronary artery disease in

adulthood.

All children older than 2 years should follow a heart-healthy diet, including low-fat

dairy products. For children between the ages of 12 months and 2 years with a family

history of obesity, abnormal blood fats, or cardiovascular disease, reduced-fat milk

should be considered.

Coronary artery disease begins in childhood, so that by the teenage years, there is

evidence that plaques that will stay with us for life are formed in most people.

Cardiovascular disease, listed as the underlying cause of death, accounts for nearly

836,546 deaths in the US. That’s about 1 of every 3 deaths in the US.

• About 2,300 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each day, an average of 1 death

every 38 seconds.

• Cardiovascular diseases claim more lives each year than all forms of cancer and

Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease combined.

Cardiovascular disease can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise,

control portion sizes, healthy body weight, eating more fruits and vegetables, and no

smoking or vaping.

Health News—Continued

Skyview Families,

I would like to update you on an issue that has been occurring at Skyview. Students are texting

their parents and telling them that they are sick and need to go home. Parents then come to pick

up their child and the Health Room never knows that they left. If your child texts you that they are

not feeling well, PLEASE direct them to the health room PRIOR to come picking them up. There

are a number of reasons why this is important.

First, we can evaluate your child and perhaps we can treat them so that they can stay in school.

Second, if we evaluate them, we know what brought them in to the health room. I check attend-

ance logs and illness logs so I can see if there is an illness coming from a particular area. This is

important because we can deep clean those rooms and I can try prevent an outbreak. Lastly, it is

against our technology policy for children to text during the school day. We will never deny your

child from contacting you and we will do this on behalf of the child

I also monitor children that continue to come to the health room to see if there is an illness pat-

tern. This also may assist the doctor when treating your child. My goal is always to keep your

child healthy and safe and I cannot do this without your cooperation. It is really important to let

us know when your child is ill. With the number of flu cases that we have seen in El Paso County

and with the CDC monitoring the Coronovirus, we have to have a plan and be able to keep stu-

dents healthy and safe. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
