Our fascination with clocks is really pretty simple. A moving object always catches the eye more readily than a fixed one. A bird sitting on top of a antique German clock suddenly flaps its wings, opens its beak and cuckoos loudly. If this were a real bird, no one would give it a second look. But this is a beautiful small hand crafted bird that has performed this act many thousand of times since the clock was first crafted.

If you would like an old clock to hang on the wall or be the focal point for your mantle, you will need a reliable and reputable antique clock dealer. One who can guide you through your purchases, answer your questions and have the background and knowledge regarding the specific clocks that interest you. With so many designs, eras and origins available, you truly need an expert to assist you, guiding you every step of the way to ensure that you are getting the quality of clock that you deserve and that it is the clock, maker and age it is represented to be.

Time Will Tell

Some clocks tick, some chime, others chirp and some clocks even

cuckoo. But the one thing they all have in common is that they fascinate us in their intricate movements and design. The range in antique clocks is really pretty amazing and desirable for today’s home.

For our trip down memory lane, we went to Brown Bear’s Basket Antiques. They have a large selection of timepieces from many different era’s and styles. From simple wall clocks, to large grandfather clocks, and gilt mantel clocks, Jim Miller, the store’s owner, can offer you insight into each clock. Most of the clocks offered at the antique store come from the collection of Charles McCreary, local Cypress resident, who has repaired and restored antique clocks for over forty years.

If you’re seeking the perfect family heirloom, something to be handed down through generations, then vintage timepieces are a fantastic option.

Turning Back TimeTurning 50 doesn’t mean you have to settle into that rocker on the porch. When Kathye Carpenter, Rock Creek resident, eyed the numbers edging up on her, she looked them straight in the eye and decided it was up her to turn back the clock. The payoff? She is having more fun and doing things most of us associate with being twenty-somthing.

Kathye began to re-focus what was important in her life. With her two daughters grown and out on their own, she now had a little time to devote to her self. “ I love to bike and scuba dive”, Kathye said. “ I started biking around the neighborhood a couple of times a week and finally decided to enter some bike events. Sometimes it is hard to stay committed to exercising, but actually I find it relaxing.”

Kathy is also a avid scuba diver, taking her sport to the waters off Cosumel. “ I like the waters there mainly because they aren’t really deep and diving there is inexpensive,” Kathye told us. “The town is friendly and just a short plane ride from Houston that it makes the perfect spot for diving.”

Born and raised in Houston, you can find Kathye most days at her Nationwide Insurance Agency on Barker Cypress, but when the door locks behind the last customer, Kathye is ready for some relaxing fun. She has found, through exercise and fitness, a way to enjoy what is ahead no matter what her age.

We all know that with the price of gas going up, that everything else will soon be jumping in price too. This takes a toll on family vacations, outings for the weekend, rising grocery bills etc.

Sometimes we have to look at things in a simple way in order to re-learn how to enjoy life. We tell kids all of the time to ‘use your imagination’, but as adults we forget to use ours. Remember when we were kids and the backyard wasn’t just a fence around some grass. Now is the time to reclaim that space and make it the family desination for fun. After all, what is a vacation for?

Justin Bennett and Shem Roland, Owners of Southern Porches and Patio’s told us that there are many options that can be used to convert your backyard into a place for some fun and entertainment with friends and family. If you are having a company helping you with the project, they believe that your ideas should be the guiding design for the shape and style. They suggest that you can just draw a rough sketch on how the space should look like and then design it accordingly. “We always talk extensely with the homeowner to find out how they will be using the space and what is the general look that they are wanting to achieve” Justin told me.”

From outdoor kitchens to fire pits, each patio is unique to the residents. So now may be the perfect time to put your ideas down on paper. Decision time! No matter which kind of patio fits your needs, you’ll be happy you can have a vacation anytime you want - in your own backyard.

If you need help with your patio needs call Justin or Shem at: Southern Porch and Patio 713.679.1812 [email protected]

Dressed in black and white, admired and loved by passing cars, the famous “Oreo” cattle on Grant Road are nonetheless down-to-earth sorts who seem to savor the simple life: feeling the sun on their backs and chewing their cuds. Their Oreo colors: black separated by a broad, white belt around the middle of their sturdy bodies is a striking sight from the road and most times of year, they can be seen grazing in their pasture on Becker Cemetery Road. These striking cattle are Dutch Belted , one of the oldest breed of cattle that hale from The Netherlands. The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy now lists Dutch Belted as on the critically rare breeds of livestock in the North America, with fewer than 200 registered cattle in the country. A hardy bovine, the Dutch Belted can trace its breeding directly to the original belted cattle in Switzerland and Austria. In the 17th century, the breed was established in the Netherlands and bred by the nobility. Very protective of their belted cattle, the Dutch would not generally party with them nor did they cooperate in maintaining a herd book of exchanged stock. The first import of the cattle was made in 1838, by D. H. Haight, who was serving as the U.S. Consul to Holland. Two years later, the famous showman P. T. Barnum purchased several of the cattle from a member of the Dutch nobility. Billed as “a rare and aristocratic breed,” the cattle traveled on exhibit with Barnum’s circus. Eventually they were placed on his farm in New York, where they proved to be excellent milk producers. From

that time until 1906 a number were imported, but since 1906 our government has not allowed any importations. The breed in the U.S. is the only source of pure belted genetics in the world since the Dutch Belted in Holland suffered from crossbreeding from 1950 to 1976. In fact breeders in Holland have turned to American Dutch Belted Breeders several times for semen from pure bulls. Today, there is a wonderfully dedicated core of people in the United States who are helping to preserve this critically rare breed. The Dutch Belted of Cypress are owned and bred by Mr. Shaw, who in the mid-1990’s decided that it was time to add some cattle on his land. While searching the different breeds of cattle, he came across an article about the rare Dutch Belted and set to find out more about how to obtain them for his farm. “ I have twelve now,” he told us. They are very friendly, and I have a cow who we are hoping is going to give birth soon.” The cows were contently sauntering around the pasture as we walk among them snapping pictures. Number “8” according to her ear tag, was more than friendly, walking over and nudging our photographer as he tried to snap a shot of her.“ She just wants to be petted,” Mr Shaw explained.” And indeed, as we quit the interview and picture taking to rub her head, the other cattle found this was a much better activity and moved closer to join in the treat. Drive slowly down Grant Rd and watch our famous and rare “Oreos” meander across the pasture and you have one of the loveliest rural scenes imaginable. A scene—and a cattle breed—you likely won’t forget.

Summer in Cypress usually means heat, bored kids but not much culture. But the diverse lineup of theatrical productions and summer acting camps by Houston Family Arts Center can fill those long summer days and nights.

Houston Family Arts Center on Grant Road opened 2,600 square feet of new classroom space just in time for summer camps. Establlished in 2005 by a group of enthusiastic theatre veterns, it has become a fun outlet for kids and adults alike. While all shows are family-friendly, the Arts Center incorporates high artistic quality, moral excellence, and cultural diversity.

There is still time to enroll your children in classes for July and August sessions. Here is a sampling of what awaits children at the summer camps:

• Plays use full versions (not cuts) of the scripts and result in several public performances• We provide costumes, cast tshirts, and 2 free tickets to see the performance• Students learn all aspects of production, including singing, choreography, lighting design, costume construction, construction and painting.• One week musical theatre camps result in the performance of a musical revue• All camps are limited to 30 participants unless otherwise noted• All camps will be staffed by 2-3 teachers and 2 interns• Cost per hour of instruction is about the lowest in Houston
