MISSOURI VETERANS HOME ST. JAMES The Veterans Voice Spring 2016 Newsletter Joseph M. White Jr. The men and women that now call MVH-St. James home have lived all over the world and have an abundance of history to share. Mr. Joe White is no exception. Joe joined the Navel Reserves while still in high school, at the age of 17. He says that he wanted to see the world. In 1940, he was called up for active duty and was sent to the Hawaiian Islands. He was stationed on a destroyer ship called the USS Schley, built in 1918. On December 7th, 1941 Joe was on a weekend pass in Honolulu staying at a local Y.M.C.A. “I was going to the 8:00am Catholic Mass and heard the bombing, but did not know what was going on. A bus then pulled up and we were told we had to go back to the ship, that we were under attack. I remember that we had to drive on the shoulder, because the roads were packed with people trying to get away from the area.” Joe stated that they returned to the ships before the second wave of the attack hit. He stated that he fed shells into a 3”/50 caliber gun that was on deck. After the smoke cleared, Joe said that they did not have time to rest, “we stayed very busy making repairs on the ships as fast as we could.” The attack killed 2,403 U.S. personnel, including 68 civilians, and destroyed or damaged 19 U.S. Navy ships, including 8 battleships. After serving 4 years in the Navy Joe returned home. Joe stated that his dad told him that he had to get off the couch and get a job. So he went to work for the Terminal Railroad, just like his dad. During that time he met the love of his life, Miss Loretta Riner. They married a year later and had five children: Barbara, Connie, Cindy, Joey, and Bobby. Joe worked for the railroad as a Switching Foreman and retired after 17 years of service. A couple years later he had the idea to open Coachlight Inn in Leasburg, MO. It was a bar and grill that he and his family owned and operated for over 17 years. He stated that everyone said he could cook a mean steak. After officially retiring Joe enjoyed traveling with his wife, spending time with his 28 grand kids, and reading historical books. Joe said that he enjoyed being in the military because he got to see so many different things; the Hawaiian Islands, the beautiful sea, and even a leper colony. Joe stated ,“I even got to go inside of a volcano once. It was above the clouds and you could look down and see the islands below.” Joe said that the one thing he could share after 92 years of living life is to compromise,“that is how my wife and I got along so well, I should know we were married for 62 years.” We are proud that Joseph M. Wishing you all a blessed day!

Mr. Red Cavanugh shows us you are never to old to have fun. Hello everyone at the St. James Veterans Home and community. My name is Steve Conrad, your newly elected Assistance League Board President.

Our members include: Mr. Dennis Wilson, Vice President • Mr. Don Olds, Treasurer • Mrs. Terry King, Secretary • Mr. Stan

Kardasz • Mr. Dick Pirtle • Mr. Bob May • Mr. Wilbert Falke • Mr. Lowell Wynn

Our core mission is to purchase items not available with state funds and that benefit the majority of our resident Veterans. In January, we made a major purchase of a new silver Dodge van to enable our Veterans to be transported to their medical appointments. These purchases are made possible by the very generous contributions and fund raising activities throughout our community. The next big fund raiser is a trivia night on April

30th, at the VFW in St. James. If you would like more information about this event please contact Lorie Steen, Supervisor of Volunteer Services. We still have team space available or if you would like to donate a silent auction or door prize item that would be great too! It is my great honor to serve as President of your Assistance League with such a dedicated group of board members. I would also like to say thank you to Mr. Dick Pirtle for doing such an outstanding job as Interim President last year. Let us always remember all those who have served and our service members currently on duty world-wide.

Spring is just around the corner and with that comes new growth! Missouri Veterans Home is pleased to announce some new staff members who have joined our team or who have been recently promoted. We would like to welcome to our team: Kristen Smith, Assistant

Administrator comes to us from the Jefferson City area where she lives with her husband, Brandon. She has many years of long term care experience. Tammie Dodson, Personnel Clerk lives in the Salem area with her husband, Jeff and their three children. She has been a State employee for approximately fifteen years in the human resource field. Lillian Zumwalt, Registered Nurse/C Core Unit Manager, Lillian currently lives in Rolla with her husband, Rich. Lillian has extensive long term care experience and looks forward to getting to know all of her C Core Veterans and their families. Lastly, we would like to congratulate Alanna Breen, CNA who has been promoted to a lead worker on B Core. Alanna has been working with our Veterans for

over six years. On February 29, 2016, we held an Open House for everyone to see our beautiful new Chapel located near our Therapy department. We are very excited to have this area inside our main building that our Veterans, families, and staff can utilize anytime for their worship needs. We have also added a new memorial screen just outside the chapel to honor our fallen heroes. In January, the Assistance League purchased a new transport van for our Veterans! This addition to our fleet will assist with MVH staff transporting Veterans to their many appointments. On average, we transport Veterans to approximately sixty appointments each week. This vehicle is top of the line and very comfortable for our Veterans. Please, if you haven’t been to our home, stop by and visit or sign up to be a volunteer. It’s the most rewarding thing you will do! Thank you for supporting our Heroes.

Sincerely,Cathy A. Haynes, Administrator

There are no words big enough. There is not a hug strong enough.

There is not a smile wide enough. All I can offer is thank you.

You are my hero.

You are in my thoughts. You are in my prayers.

For all you’ve done, thank you.

Mr. Jim Tripp enjoys meeting McGwire and his handler from the Wild Bird Sanctuary.

Sure hope Truman, our very own Eagle mascot does not get jealous that another bird was getting all the attention!

Mr. Bob Moffet looks like he may have had two desserts with that big smirk on his face!

Mr. Kenny Bales sings a few tunes with Shirley Robinson and the Wildrose Band at the BBQ Bivouac event held in November.

No Truman, you can not drive the Twisted Addiction monster truck!

Thank you Team RWB for choosing MVH-St. James to host your half marathon and 3 miler event. We had a huge turn out of runners with amazing weather. AND... we raised over $7,000.00 for our MVH Vechicle Fund!

Santa must be good friends with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, because they sure brought a lot of gifts for our Veterans this holiday.

Major John Motel and staff from the South Central Correctional Center presented Miss Ophelia Parkinson with a large donation of afghans and artwork for our Veterans.

Legacy Vet Riders presented a check in the amount of $300.00 to our Assistance League President, Steve Conrad.

Wreaths Across America

Mr. Art Compton speaks about the importance of remembering the men and women that have fought for our country and our freedom.

Each year the program involves a nationwide ceremony followed by placing of the wreaths. Mr. Art Compton is the organizer for the St. James Veterans Cemetery Wreath Program. He and his wife, Jan have been very dedicated to this program for over 7 years. “We are very blessed and honored to have so much community involvement volunteering for such a great cause. It is truly a beautiful site to see all the headstones with a wreath during the holidays”, stated Lorie Steen, Supervisor of Volunteer Services. If you are interested in sponsoring a wreath or volunteering with Wreaths Across America, here at St. James, please contact Art and Jan Compton at 573-885-7228. This year the event will be held on December 17th, 2016.

Mr. Paul Salois places the Air Force wreath at the ceremony.

Mr. Earl DeFoe helps Lorie Steen,Supervisor of Volunteer Services place wreaths on some of the stones.

We had over 1000 trick-or- treaters visit our home, that sure is a lot of candy. I think that Mr. Jim Gratzer and Mr. Joe White may have had a few pieces too.

Mr. & Mrs. Darrell Swaim always have fun handing out candy and seeing all the little monsters that are out on Halloween.

The students of St. Patricks School came to our home to spread a little holiday cheer. They even brought lots of wish-list items for our Veterans!

We have an amazing staff that truly care for our Veterans each and every day. Pictured above are Natalie McDonald, CNA and Mr. Boby Lewis. Natalie has worked at MVH for over 12 years!

Even the St. James Tiger Cubs saved their pennies to adopt our Veterans.

Volunteer Spotlight Barb McDowell

Miss Barb has been volunteering at the Missouri Veterans Home for almost 7 years. She always has a smile on her face no matter if she is jammin out with a bluegrass band or playing games with our Veterans. We feel truly blessed to have such a caring

and talented lady on our team. Barb says that she enjoys playing and making crafts with her grandkids. She also loves to paint on canvas. Barb’s favorite saying is “Make sure to help others along the way of life.” “When I volunteer at MVH I try to make the Veterans laugh, to lighten the load they have to carry, plus I hope they see that I am concerned about them. I try to see the good in people and I feel their goodness and kindness towards me, and that makes me happy,” said Barb.
