With summer an endless stretch of just such days, summer was my season — right up until august 1st, when ads for back-to-school supplies and clothes and haircuts evoked the dark spec-ter of early mornings and stuffy classrooms. oh sure…there were new school shoes, all scuff-free and shiny…the annual box of no. 2 pencils embossed with my full name in glorious gold…and a cool lunchbox destined to smell like peanut butter and apples — but they were cold comfort for someone enchanted by ants. the good news? you can still watch clouds through a schoolroom window — and october 1st really isn’t too early to begin thinking about summer.
