I know. It’s sound so negative. But anyone who has ever found themselves to be the destination for the family’s annual Thanksgiving dinner knows exactly what I’m talking about. It’s not that cooking the meal is so hard. after your first few Thanks-givings, that naked turkey isn’t particularly daunting, nor is the long, long list of favorite dishes that absolutely must be included on the menu, even though it grows every time someone new marries into the family — and even though only one person actually eats those nasty turnips and nobody understands mince pie. It’s the dishes after those dishes. There are hundreds of them. Maybe even thousands. OK, that might be an exag-geration, but all I know is this. It’s not the tryptophan in the turkey causing the coma that overtakes everyone right after dinner. It’s that fleeting peek at the kitchen everyone gets on the way to the den for a snooze.

It’s not the dishes. It’s the dishes.
