THE U.S. – AUSTRALIASUBMARINE SERVICE RELATIONSHIP

Automated Fleet Towed Array Sonar (AFTAS) Systems, adapted from U.S. system developed for the LOS ANGELES Class, are being deployedon HMAS COLLINS Class Submarines

Australian developed HAIL system installed on a U.S. Submarine in support of a recent exercise –long-term view is that HAIL complements U.S. designed ACOMMS System

Torpedoes• Joint PCO Ops - tremendous success• Strong participation in MK48 user’s group• Expect Australian personnel to establish joint

program office in Washington, DC. (March/April timeframe)

• Exchange scientists to NUWC/NPT• Joint participation in CBASS development

for the United States and Australia

RAN / US partnership on Combat Control System MK 2 program

Australian Underwater Tracking Range (AURA), mutually beneficial to both Navies

BASIC TENETS OF OPERATING A MODERN SUBMARINE FORCE

BASIC TENETS OF OPERATING A MODERN SUBMARINE FORCE

Select the best people available

Keep training at the highest standards

Use the highest quality, most reliable parts in submarine construction

Centralize control of submarine systems to prevent quick fixes and easy workarounds

Learn from mistakes and share those lessons with our allies

Face the facts about your situation

HAIL• Significant leap-ahead for

implementing communications interoperability needed for allied submarines

• United States Navy is currently testing two HAILs aboard submarines

• USN is contemplating buying six more for installation aboard Pacific-based submarines

CCS MK2• VIRGINIA Class and COLLINS Class

will leverage each others’ experience for efficiency and reliability

FURTHER BENEFITS OF COOPERATION

FURTHER BENEFITS OF COOPERATION

U.S. – Australia Cooperation provides additional benefits to our Submarine Communities by:

• Lowering bottom line for R&D and procurement

• Accelerating our modernization

• Allowing us to share target ranges without needing to transport missiles and torpedoes across the ocean

• Providing forward-deployed arms depots in case of emergency
