Studying and living on campus

The University of Augsburg campus is one of the mostcongenial places to study in Germany. Situa ted near thecity centre of Augsburg, the cam pus is spacious withoutbeing overwhelming. The modern buildings, functionaland yet architecturally appealing, blend into a landscapedpark with grassy areas, a lake, fountains and severalsculptures by contemporary artists.

The concentration of the academic buildings on one sitesimplifies the day-to-day working of the university whileencouraging communication. The individual faculties, theadministration offices (including the Student Service Centre), the refectory, cafeterias, bars, and the librariesare all conveniently close together. This is a place wherepeople study, teach, carry out research, and live. There isa sense of what „university” really means: a sense ofcommunity, cooperation and solidarity between the lecturers and the researchers on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the students who benefit from the research through the teaching they receive.

Young, open, international

The University of Augsburg was founded in 1970. It isone of the new, modern universities in Ba varia, and withapproximately 15,000 students it is of a manageable size.It attracts students from far beyond its immediate catch-ment area, and at 14% its share of foreign students is larger than at comparable universities.

The University of Augsburg maintains particularly closepartnerships with the Universities of Pitts burgh (USA),Osijek (Croatia), Iasi (Roma nia), Chabarowsk (Russia) andJohannesburg (South Africa). It has cooperation agree-ments with over forty universities in Europe, Asia, SouthAfrica, North America and Latin America. The number ofERASMUS ex change programmes also continues togrow. There are currently exchange programmes withmore than 150 universities throughout Europe.

Foreign academics and students are warmly welcomedto all institutes of higher education in Augsburg and areoffered professional advice about their stay. An office hasbeen set up to answer all their questions, which they canconsult before leaving their home country or upon arriv alin Augsburg. This office deals with everything relating toresidency permits (visas) and the practicalities of life inGermany.

Anyone who has studied or carried out research here cankeep in touch with the University of Augsburg once theyhave returned home. „Alum ni Augs burg International” isa flourishing network that benefits all current Augsburgstudents, too, as they can use it to find contacts almostanywhere in the world when they themselves go abroadto study. Steeped in history and a great place to live today

Augsburg is one of the oldest cities in Germany. The Roman Emperor Augustus founded the city more than2000 years ago in 15 B.C. In the late Middle Ages and theRenaissance, the city devel oped into a trade and financemetropolis that was influential throughout the world. The fa mous Fugger and Welser merchant families rantheir businesses from here. The wealth that abounded atthat time is still reflected in the historic city-scape today. The town hall, constructed by the master builder EliasHoll, the city palace of the Fuggers, and the Fuggerei, theoldest council housing estate in the world, bear witnessto this. In addition to the splendid buildings and townhouses of the Renaissance, a rich artisan tradition (gold-smiths and silversmiths, textile production) has left itsmark on the city. The peaceful old town with its narrowalleyways, canals and bars, together with the busy squa-res and shopping precincts of this old „patrician city“,create a charming Mediterranean atmosphere. Augs burghas even been called the northernmost city of Italy…

One Augsburg tradition that still has an influence today isthe „Confessio Augustana“ – the Lu th e ran profession offaith – which was first declared at the Imperial Diet of1530. Another is the „Re ligious Peace of Augsburg“, thefirst successful political settlement between the Christi-an faiths that took place in the city in 1555. This ReligiousPeace is still celebrated today with a public holiday (8 August) exclusive to Augsburg. Every three years theAugsburg Peace Prize is awarded to an important publicfigure. This tradition is also consciously cultivated on aneveryday level: cooperation between residents from dif-ferent ethnic backgrounds and faiths is an important partof local politics. The university also participates in thisprogramme with the „Augsburg Academic Prize for Inter-cultural Stu dies“, which has been awarded annually since1998. It has now gained a reputation as one of the mostre nowned German prizes in this field of re search.

Today, Augsburg has a population of around 260,000. Inaddition to commerce and administration, the main em-ployers in the city include a number of leading German,European and international technological companies, such as Fujitsu Siemens, EADS, KUKA, MAN and the in-ternation al paper group, UPM Kymmene, the successorto the old Augsburg paper company Haindl. The universi-ty has also decisively contributed to the emergence ofenvironmental research and envir onmental engineeringas future-oriented focal points for both the city and theregion. Research projects in this field have resulted in close links between the University of Augsburg and numer ous partners with interests in the promotion of environmental science, both at local and state levels andin the private sector.

Augsburg is a great tourist attraction, both be cause of itscarefully preserved buildings, monuments, museumsand churches, and its vibrant cultural scene. Here, too,the city continues to cultivate its old traditions. For exam-ple, Augs burg is the birthplace of Leopold Mozart, Wolf gang Amadeus' father; the international Leopold Mozart Violin Competition takes place here every two years. The playwright Bertolt Brecht was also born here. His work is kept alive in the city through performances ofhis plays, readings, lectures and exhibitions. Both MozartHouse and Brecht House can still be visited today: goodstarting points for anyone wanting to follow the tracksleft in the city by these two geniuses. Other Augsburgcelebrities include Jim Knopf and Urmel from the Ice, themost famous representatives of the renowned AugsburgPuppet Theatre („Augsburger Puppenkiste“).

The city's geographical location is another factor thatadds to the quality of life there and makes it more attrac-tive to tourists. Munich, the state ca p i tal of Bavaria, iswithin easy distance, as are several of Germany's mostpopular holiday destin ations. These include the GermanAlps and the fairytale lakes of Upper Bavaria that providethe backdrop for Neuschwanstein Castle and the otherroyal castles built by King Ludwig II.

Ideal conditions for studying

If it takes more than 15 minutes to get to the universityfrom the main train station or Königsplatz, the central busand tram stop, then something has gone wrong some -where. Trams leave Kö nigs platz every five minutes andstop right in the middle of the campus. The university registration fee includes a „Semester Ticket” that givesstudents free travel on public transport within Augs burg. And living in Augsburg is almost as cheap: even in thecharming city centre, the rents are af fordable. In additionto this, there are more than 2000 rooms and apartmentsavailable in the university's halls of residence.

Seven faculties

The University of Augsburg provides the ideal conditionsfor completing a degree programme successfully andwithin a reasonable time frame. Ever since its founda -tion, the university has been committed to reform. Seven faculties have been established, each with long-term strategies for development and using the most up-to-date facilities available:

• Faculty of Business Administration and Economics (founded 1970)

• Faculty of Law (founded 1971)• Faculty of Theology (founded 1971)• Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences

(founded 1972)• Faculty of Philology and History (founded 1972)• Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

(founded 1981) and• Faculty of Applied Computer Science

(founded 2003).

Interdisciplinary, practice-oriented, responsible

There are many areas in which the faculties work to -gether closely. Interdisciplinary cooperation is a daily feature of research and teaching at the university, andnew forms of teaching to intensify and accelerate lear-ning are developed in each of the faculties. Where appro-priate, the degree programmes are designed to be aspractice-oriented as possible. The courses on offer comefrom the three main fields of research and teaching thatdetermine the university's profile: cultural and social sciences, innovative technologies and teacher training. The curricula are designed to meet the high standards ofacademic excellence on the one hand combined with thepractical needs of society and the economy on the other. The Uni versity of Augsburg takes its responsibilities seriously with regard to the ethical issues and social

responsibilities that come with education and re search. This is reflected in the university's motto: „Scientia etconscientia”.

The journey to Bologna is complete

Significant changes have come about in the range of subjects and degrees on offer at the Uni ver sity of Augsburg in the last few years as part of the internatio -nalisation of university studies („Bo logna Process”). For the start of the 2008/9 winter semester, all courseswere converted into new bachelor’s and master’s degreecourses. T u i tion fees at the university cost 480 euros persemester.

Strongly integrated in the Elite Network of Bavaria

With its participation in eleven master’s and post-gradu-ate programmes, the University of Augsburg is a strongpresence in the „Elite Net work of Bavaria” (ENB). Thisnetwork, initiated by the Bavarian Ministry of Educationand Science, offers the opportunity of first-class acade-mic education aimed at particularly gifted, highly moti -vated and enthusiastic students. These unusual, attrac -tive degree programmes are available in a variety of different subjects. All of the elite courses are distinguis-hed by cooperations with partner universities in Germanyand abroad, and by intensive support from the academicstaff.

Professional language teaching

The University of Augsburg's Language Centre pro videsa high level of in-depth tuition in mo d ern languages. Stu-dents of philology receive practical language training inEnglish, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. In addi-tion to this, the Language Centre offers courses specifi-cally tailored to law and economics students, as well asthe opportunity to study other languages such as Russi-an, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese or Ara bic. Foreign stu-dents can improve their Ger man language skills in tan-dem with their other studies. The University of Augsburgand the University of Ap plied Sciences work closely to-gether in a joint tes ting centre for German as a ForeignLanguage („TestDaF-Zentrum”), which tests the Germanlanguage skills of international students.

The humanities and social sciences – closely linked

Three faculties work closely together to offer a wide ran-ge of subjects in the humanities and so cial sciences. TheFaculty of Theology, for example, offers a diploma in theo-logy, teach er training in religious education, and trainingfor Catholic priests. Beyond this, it is involved at an inter-disciplinary level in the fields of media ethics and environ-mental ethics.

One of the main focal points of both the Faculty of Philo-sophy and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Philologyand History has always been teacher training, from prima-ry school to all types of se c on dary school. At the Universi-ty of Augsburg these courses are based on a successfulcombination of detailed knowledge of the individual sub-jects, didactics and language training. In addition to theteacher training courses, the current 3-year bachelor’s and2-year master’s courses enable students to study com bi-nations of subjects chosen from history, language and li-terature, political and social sci-ence, or educational sci-ence. New, innovative and high-ranked courses such asthe B.A./ M.A. programmes in „Media and Communica ti-on” and „European Cultural History” are proving so po p u-lar that they are oversubscribed every semes ter. The Uni-versity of Augsburg also offers elite courses in „Ethics ofText Culture” and „Histo ric al Art and Image Discourses“,which are included in the Bavaria Elite Network (ENB).

Area Studies

Centralised institutes have been set up for some speciali-sed fields of study at the university. As early as the1980s, the University of Augsburg was making exempla-ry progress with its Area Studies programme. Today, ithas an internation ally renowned Canada Institute withcourses in Canadian Studies that are unique in Germany.Additionally, there is an Institute for Spanish, Portugueseand Latin American Studies (ISLA) and a Russian/East-Eu-ropean research associa-tion (FORUMOST).

Cultural Studies and Educational Science

The „Institute for European Cultural History” with its gra-duate courses and very popular study programme repre-sents a significant growth area that benefits from thewealth of sources from the Early Modern Age available inAugsburg as a city of culture.

„Heterogeneity and Educational Success” is a m a jor re-search project being carried out by the „Central Institutefor Didactic Research and Teaching”, which bundles all ac-tivities in the field of teaching and learning research.

The Humanities and Social Sciences Faculties at Augs-burg continue to raise their profile, for ex ample throughtheir Centre of Excellence for Cul tural Studies and Educa-tional Science. This combines first-class expertise in cul-tural-historical research and outstanding potential in thefield of research into teaching and learning methods.

Music education on an international level

In 2008, a large part of the former Nuremberg-AugsburgCollege of Music was integrated into the University ofAugsburg in the form of the Leopold Mozart Centre. Sin-ce then, in addition to courses in Music Education, theuniversity has also offered opportunities for artistic andmusical training at the highest level, as well as a master’sprogramme in Music Therapy as an extra-occupationalpostgraduate course.

10

Information-oriented business sciences

In line with modern trends, Business Admini stra tion andEconomics are taught with emphasis on re levance to thebusiness world and to meet the requirements of the mo-dern information society. Students can follow 3-year bachelor’s courses in „Information-oriented BusinessStudies”, in „Information-oriented Economics” or in „Global Busi ness Management”.

The „Global Business Management” programme bund-les the research interests and expertise of the Faculty ofBusiness Administration and Eco nomics. International-ism is one of its trademarks. One example of this is the„German-French Ma n agement” course, which leads to adual master's degree from the Universities of Augs burgand Rennes. Another important field is In for mation Ma-nagement with its „Core Compe tency Centre for IT & Financial Services”. The top quality of the research andteaching is particularly well illustrated by the Bavarian Elite Net work study programme „Finance and Informa -tion Management”, and by the excellent part-time cour-ses for professionals, such as the „MBA in Business Ma nage ment” or the qualification as „Ratings Analyst”.

Excellent further education opportunities

The Faculty of Business Administration and Eco nomicsworks in close collaboration with the „Cen tre for FurtherEducation and Transfer of Knowledge” (ZWW). The ZWWhas an excellent reputation throughout Germany. Overthe last three decades it has become a leader in its fieldwith its „Contact Course in Management”. The courseson offer for business executives are distinguished bytheir high standards. In 2004, one of the leading associa-tions that provides funding for German education and research named the ZWW in Augsburg as the best insti-tute attached to a university in the German further education market.

Law: classic and innovative

Law students at the University of Augsburg can comple-te their degree more quickly than any where else in Germany. At the same time, they enjoy the best opportu-nities for becoming ac quainted with legal systems in other countries. The system of exams at the end of eachsemes ter and the „Examinatorium”, which is an integralpart of the degree programme, not only makes the course shorter but also has a positive effect on the examresults. Augsburg law students are consistently found tobe above the state average.

The Faculty of Law also offers an alternative to the StateExamination: new bachelor’s and mas ter’s courses in„Law and Business Studies”. This course takes accountboth of the changing job perspectives for law graduatesand of the increasing internationalisation of law. Nume-rous ex change programmes with European and Ame ri canuniversities offer the students outstanding opportunitiesto gain experience abroad. The „Mu nich Intel lec t ual Property Law Center” (MIPLC), in collaboration with theFaculty of Law at Augs burg, the Max Planck Society, theTechnical University of Mu nich, and the George Washing- ton Uni versity, offers a first-class, international-standardcourse in intellectual property law.

Global Law and Business

The classic fields of public law, civil law and crim inal laware an integral part of and supplemented by interdiscipli-nary institutes for business and tax law, European legalsystems and environmental law. The „Augsburg Centerfor Global Business Law and Regulation” (ACELR) is ba-sed on the expertise gathered from these institutes. Inits turn, the „Global Law and Business” research associa-tion combines both the ACELR of the Law Faculty andthe „Global Business Ma n agement” programme of theFaculty of Busi ness Administration and Economics.

Ideal conditions for studying natural sciences

Since its foundation in 1981, the Faculty of Ma th e maticsand Natural Sciences has been extremely successful indeveloping the fields of phy sics and mathematics. Theteaching in the fields of mathematics, business mathema-tics, physics and materials science on the various cour ses( bachelor's, master's and teacher training) has benefitedfrom the in-depth research carried out in this faculty. The-se benefits include superb facilities, equipment and re- sources, as well as an ideal teacher-student ratio.

Leading research in physics

The Department of Physics at Augsburg is a world leaderin the field of fundamental research into solid-state phy-sics, not least because of their focus on „Electronic Correlations and Magne t ism” (EKM) and the renownedresearch project 484 of the German Research Associati-on (DFG). The institute can also boast recent, internatio-nally recognised success in the research field of na n o-technology. Here the University of Augsburg collaborateswith the Ludwig Maximilians Uni versity in Munich andthe Technical University of Munich in specialised researchfields and the pro motion of elite studies. As part of theelite courses, the Institute of Physics also works close lywith these two Munich universities in the field of materi-als science. Furthermore, in order to optimise the trans-fer of science to the economy, a User Centre for Materi-als and Environmental Research (AMU) has been set upat the Univer sity of Augsburg. This user centre is part ofthe High-Tech Offensive (HTO) in Bavaria.

Computer science: a success story

The HTO has also enabled the university to significantlyexpand its Computer Science department. The year 2000saw the start of a diploma course in computer sciencewith a wide range of subjects, which is to be supplemen-ted by two B.Sc./M.Sc. programmes specialising in infor-mation management and multi-media. The Faculty ofComputer Science at Augsburg has not only quickly deve-loped into the third largest in Bavaria in terms of studentnumbers, but it is also in charge of the elite course in

„Software En gin eering”, the only computer science pro-gramme in the Elite Network of Bavaria. In 2003 the In sti- tute of Computer Science merged with the Insti tute ofGeography to form an independent Fa c ul ty for AppliedComputer Science. Its main fo cuses are geographicaland environmental information technology.

Integrative environmental research

The environmental sciences form a further link betweenthe natural sciences and technology disciplines, which, intheir turn, are closely linked to subject areas in social sci-ences and the humanities. An important topic of researchthroughout the university as a whole, they form a vitalpart of the Environmental Competence Centre of Augs- burg and Swabia.

The field of geography dealing with ecological issues andmaterials science is also a vital aspect of this researcharea. The „User Centre for Ma terials and EnvironmentalResearch” works hand in hand with the „EnvironmentalScience Centre” (WZU) at the university. The WZU col-lects and coordinates relevant expertise from all of theuniversity's faculties. This ranges from environ- men talsimulation and environmental computer science to envi-ronmental economics, environmental management andenvironmental law, and even includes environmental edu-cation and ethics. At the WZU, contemporary issues aredealt with through interdisciplinary cooperation betweenaca demics from Germany and abroad. The future-orient-ed, sustainable management of substances, materialsand energy, and education in sustain-able developmentare the leitmotifs here.

Established in 2010 as part of the Faculty of Mathematicsand Natural Sciences, the Institute for Materials Resour-ce Management (MRM) addresses the central problemof scarcity of resources. Materials scientists and econo-mists work together with experts on resource manage-ment and resource strategies to develop and implementstrategic, renewable functional materials, processes, pro-ducts and technologies economically and efficiently. AB.Sc. degree course in Industrial Engineering („WING”),which focuses on these topics, started up in the acade-mic year 2010/2011, and is offered by the MRM.
