Introduction

UNM Facts1998-1999

In fall 1998, the campuses of the University of New Mexico served 30,241 students, awarded 4,638 degrees and certificates, employed 2,964 faculty and 10,525 staff, and had a total operating and capital budget of about $971 million.

UNM consists of a Main Campus located in Albuquerque, which includes the Health Sciences Center; three branch campuses that have a two-year degree mission: UNM-Gallup, UNM-Los Alamos, and UNM-Valencia; an Education Center that functions very much like a branch campus: UNM-Taos; and Graduate Centers at Los Alamos and Santa Fe (sometimes referred to as UNM North). This Fact Book presents data for all these components. The UNM Health Sciences Center and its programs, which include the School of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Pharmacy, is included in the Fact Book sometimes as part of the Main Campus and sometimes separately. Footnotes and labels should make it clear in each case what is included.

The UNM-Main Campus also delivers courses across the state, partially using live TV and electronic transmission. In addition, there is a Division of Continuing Education that serves over 40,000 people every year in both credit and non-credit courses.

* 1995 enrollment for the Gallup campus is reported elsewhere as 3,000, the correct enrollment figure. This table includes 34 students whowere not administratively disenrolled (for failure to pay their tuition) until after the census date. Their inclusion here should not affect percent distributions, as their ages were fairly evenly distributed.

There are over 225 degree programs and majors offered at UNM. The 1997–99 Main Campus Catalog lists 109 baccalaureate, 65 masters, and 36 doctoral level degree programs and majors. Many of the degree programs have additional concentrations and options—for example, either a bachelor of science or a bachelor of arts. In addition, there are 4 certificate programs (one of which is a graduate certificate); 2 associate degree programs; 8 Education Specialist Degrees (graduate programs beyond the masters level); and first-professional programs in law, medicine, and pharmacy.

The University offers an Evening and Weekend Degree Program (EWDP) in which at least 45 degrees are available. Over 1,000 classes are offered each semester after 4:00 p.m., and about 11,500 students attend UNM at night. The following list of degree programs and majors are marked with an "*" if the entire program is available in the EWDP and with a "+" if several core courses in a program are offered.

UNMGL is comparable to a non-departmentalized college within the University and is administered by the Dean of Library Services who reports to the Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs. HSC reports to the HSC Associate Vice-President for Planning and Development. LL reports to the Dean of the School of Law. The UNM General Library encompasses Zimmerman Library (the University's main library), Centennial Science and Engineering Library, Parish Memorial Library, the Fine Arts Library, the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS), the Center for Regional Studies (CRS), and the Center for Southwest

In 1997, UNM's library was ranked as the 49th library out of 110 research libraries rated by the ARL.
