The Gifting Tree on display in the Mitchell Building An artwork by Adelaide-based artist Hans Kreiner, commissioned by the University of Adelaide in 2009 to create a focus for charity collections during the festive season. The Gifting Tree invites the viewer to feel life and hope engendered by its perky branches and the birds perched upon them. In 2015 Hans added three new animals to the tree, refreshing its identity. The juxtaposition of the Gifting Tree and the traditional entrance of the Mitchell Building presents a playful stylistic contrast of the traditional and the contemporary. The Smith Family The Smith Family was founded in Sydney in 1922 by five businessmen who decided to deliver toys to orphans on Christmas Eve. Since its inception the organisation has grown and developed, and responds to an ever-changing society.
