Autumn 2019 English Maths
AUTUMN
1
Famous British Authors:
Michael Morpurgo Text Focus: Private Peaceful
In this unit we will be reading, discussing and examining the
book, Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo.
We will be exploring how the author uses language to create
characters and relationships and how ideas, values and emotions
are explored and portrayed.
We will reflect on the writer’s presentation of ideas and issues of
wartime, the motivation and behaviour of central characters and
the development of the plot and the overall impact of a text.
In terms of writing output we will write imaginatively, interesting
and thoughtful texts with a clear focus of organising and
presenting whole texts effectively, sequencing and structuring
information, developing our ideas and events.
Place Value and Number
A six week block of study to develop our students
understanding and application of the concept of place
value, the decimal and the number system.
We will investigate place value and effectively ordering
integers with decimals.
The methods and key vocabulary of the four
operations will be re-visited and strengthened.
We develop strategies of calculating and answering
worded Real-life problems which use addition and
subtraction operations. The focus will be on following a
methodical and clear technique of problem solving.

POETRY: Poetry Clusters/Poetry from Different Cultures.
This unit explores poetry looking at the key features of language
and structure, and focusing on writing different styles of poetry to
create the students own anthology.
There are a variety of tasks that the pupils will be asked to
undertake throughout the scheme which will be accomplished
through independent, paired and group work.
The reading, discussion and writing tasks focus on selecting and
presenting poetry for a specific audience in a variety of styles.
The variety of tasks will develop the reading, writing, speaking
and listening skills of our students.
Problem Solving, Fractions, Decimals and
Percentages
We continue our method and accuracy of problem
solving, using all four operations from single step to
multi step problems.
We shall learn equivalence of fractions, decimals and
percentages.
We shall add and subtract using fractions.

Writing Focus: SENTENCE STRUCTURE AND PUNCTUATION

Our students will have the opportunity to learn more about the
author’s craft and then put what they have learned into practice.
Planning a fictional story, planning and refining detail effectively.

use real life models to show the importance of accurate
measuring.
Constructing, measuring & using geometric notation will be
the main focus for the students.

During the summer term we will look at sculpture and modelling.
The class will research masks, looking at various techniques and designs. They will then design their own mask creating
mood boards.
Using clay each child will create an individual mask which will be decorated in mixed media and varnished.

SUMMER 1 WORLD WAR ONE

The class will be looking at the main causes of the Great War and the
factors that contributed to the stalemate.
We will be concentrating on identifying and analysing the many groups
devastated by the war and at the impact of trench warfare.

THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION
This module will follow on from what we have learned about the First
World War and we will study the links between the two events.
The children will analyse the historical basis for the revolution and look
into the causes of the revolt due to the effects of social injustice.

SUMMER 1 To learn about different genres, composers,
instruments & musical forms from the Classical
Era (1750-1820)
To apply this knowledge to listening to an
