21. Elizabeth Fisher (Mary Tupper2, Eliakim1). Born in 1787. Elizabeth died in Brookfield, NS, on 14 Feb 1843; she was 56. In Sep 1806 when Elizabeth was 19, she married Adam Johnson, son of Robert Johnson (1747-4 Apr 1815) & Susannah Gourley (1758-Jul 1844). Born on 3 Oct 1779 in Truro, Colchester Co., NS. In 1807 when Sarah Barber was 18, she married Eddy Whidden, son of Samuel Whidden (1752-10 Jul 1821) & Abigail Newcomb (8 Jun 1757-11 Mar 1815). Born on 16 Feb 1778 in Salmon River, NS. Eddy died in New Annan, NS, in 1858; he was 79. Residence: Greenfield, NS, New Annan, NS. Birth recorded by John Harris, Town Clerk, Truro. Thomas Miller tells the story of the birth of Eddy’s twins. "They settled in the woods at Greenfield, being 5 miles from the nearest neighbour. Upon one occasion while they were living in this lonely situation in the woods and the snow was very deep, Mrs. Whidden not being very well one morning he started and took his cattle with him to try and make a track in the snow, so that some person might get to his house to be with her; but he failed in getting a track made through the deep snow. He returned home at night much fatigued, when his wife presented him with two sons that had been born during the day." They had the following children: 42 i. Eliza (1808-bef 1871) ii. Mary. Born in 1810 in Greenfield, Col. Co., NS. Mary died in New Annan, NS, in May

1857; she was 47. There is some confusion surrounding Sarah and Mary Whidden. Miller says (as does

Helen Whidden, likely from Miller), that Sarah married Ebenezer Upham. However, a marriage in Colchester County for Richard Upham, age 22, son of Eben and Mary (Whiddden), resident of Tatamagouche, married 2 March 1865 to Lucy Patriquin, age 20,

daughter of A and M (MacBurnie), also a resident of Tatamagouche, suggests otherwise. Jerry McCombie, 10629 Watertown Ct., Orlando, FL 32821-8616, also provides family evidence that Sarah Whidden, daughter of Eddie, b. 1816 Onslow, NS, m. 1841 in Pictou William John McCombie (d. 1904). Neither Miller or Helen Whidden have any information on Mary. Thus it appears that Miller confused Mary for Sarah in his account.

In 1828 when Mary was 18, she married Ebenezer Upham, son of Richard Upham

(1758-Oct 1825) & Mary Ann Cock (1759-Mar 1842). Born in Mar 1797. Residence: New Annan, NS.

Round Hill From the United Church of Canada Bulletin 41-01, Remembrance Day. With each passing year, fewer are left to remember the wars that the Remembrance day

poppies signify. One Nova Scotia family has a unique way of remembering. Their grandfather and great-grandfather, James Howard Tupper, left his wife and four children to serve in the First World War. Before he left he wrote a letter to each of his sons which their mother, Letty, was to give them on their twelfth birthdays. In these letters James shared with his children his love for them, his devotion to his wife and his strong faith in God. “First”, he wrote, “be true to your God. Second, be true to yourself. Third, be tru to your country.” While he was serving in France, James asked a friend to take a small piece of ivy home to his wife. Letty planted the ivy, which thrived in the rich farm soil of the Annapolis Valley. In September 1916, James was killed in action. No one can say for sure the influence James had on the succeeding generations. However, each of James and Letty’s sons served as ministers in The United Church of Canada, and this legacy has continued as a great-grandson now carries on the tradition. James’ presence is also acknowledged as his vine continues to be woven into anniversary corsages and bdridal bouquets, and crawls along the walls of family homes.

November 11, 2001, Hello to Colleagues and Friends Just a note to let you know that the Mission and Service Fund bulletin for November 11, 2001 has a a strong personal connection for me. The back of the bulletin tells the story of a Nova Scotia family who have a special way of remembering. The story is about my great-grandfather who was killed in World War I. One of the things he did before he died was to pick a slip of

ivy vine in a convent garden in France and it made it's way back to my great-grandmother and it has been growing in the family, ever since. We have it growing in our kitchen in Fort Qu'Appelle. The bulletin cover mentions his legacy of faith and love. His two sons became United Church ministers (one being my grandfather) and it says that one great-grandson is a minister as well - that's me!

It is a legacy that I am proud of and remembrance has a personal meaning for me. Even though I never knew James H. Tupper, I do feel that he has influenced my life. If you are worshipping or leading worship in a place that uses the bulletin, I have one request - could you send me a copy! It would be neat to have copies of the cover from congregations throughout the country. Paul Dillman, Box 2027, Fort Qu'Appelle, SK S0G 1S0 Minister at Heritage United in Regina. Buried in Oak Park Cemetery, Chicago. There is some confusion surrounding Sarah and Mary Whidden. Miller says (as does Helen Whidden, likely from Miller), that Sarah married Ebenezer Upham. However, a marriage in Colchester County for Richard Upham, age 22, son of Eben and Mary (Whiddden), resident of Tatamagouche, married 2 March 1865 to Lucy Patriquin, age 20, daughter of A and M (MacBurnie), also a resident of Tatamagouche, suggests otherwise. In 1841 when Sarah was 24, she married William John McCombie in Pictou, NS. Born on 17 Feb 1820 in Pictou, NS. William John died in Marquette, MI, on 6 May 1904; he was 84.

Eliakim Tupper, Warden of Colchester County, died this morning at the residence of his son-in-law, L.M. Ellis, Queen Street, Truro. The death of Col. Tupper has come upon us all with a shock. It was so sudden and to most of our citizens so unexpected. For some time the Warden had been suffering from severe pains from an injury to his abdomen, which latterly developed into an abcess on the wall of the abdomen, and which such serious symptoms that he left his home in Stewiacke and arrived in Truro on Monday the 10th inst., for medical treatment. There is no doubt but that the deceased contracted cold while journeying to Truro, and when he arrived here he was a very sick man. His physician, Dr. J. H. McKay, did all that medical skill could do, and had consultation with Dr. W.S. Muir on Sunday last. Both physicians agreed as to the nature of the disease and as to the very serious condition of the suffering man. Yesterday the Warden was about the same in his symptoms. He lingered through the night and this morning, as already stated, passed quietly away. The immediate cause of death was an abcess on the wall of the abdomen resulting in peritonitis and blood poisoning. Inflammation of the bowels had set in and was another complication that baffled all medical skill. By the death of Warden Tupper, Colchester County loses one of it's ablest, shrewdest and most talented men. After the Municipal Incorporation Act was passed, Col. Tupper was the first Warden in Colchester. He at once showed his firm and lucid grasp of the new Act, and from his clear interpretation of its complicated provisions started the machinery running smoothly in the county. The deceased was born 66 years ago on the farm at South Branch, Upper Stewiacke, where he has ever resided, and to a community in which he has ever been universally respected. He was Warden of this County at the time of his death. The deceased has left a widow, one son Martin L., who resides on the homestead, and a daughter, Mrs. L.M. Ellis of this town. To them and other relatives the News extends heartfelt and sincere sympathy in their unexpected and sad bereavement. It is expected that the remains will leave here on Thursday for the Presbyterian church in Upper Stewiacke Village, where the funeral service and ceremonies will take place at about 2 o'clock on that day. - (Truro Daily News - Tuesday Dec 18, 1894) Warden Tupper's Funeral - An immense mass of people assembled at Upper Stewiacke Presbyterian Church, yesterday afternoon to attend the funeral of the late Warden Tupper. There was an immense congregation of friends from all parts of the Stewiacke Valley, and other places in the country. Among those present were: Councellors H. H. Eaton, Salmon River; Bigelow, Lower Stewiacke; McGill Johnson, Upper Stewiacke Village; and Charles Creelman; James McCurdy, Clifton, License Inspector; Hugh McKenzie, Municipal Clerk; Geo. R Archibald, Lower Stewiacke; John Dickie, Middle Stewiacke; W.D. Dimock, Truro, and many others. The funeral services were very impressive, and were conducted by the Rev'ds A. G. Gunn, S. F. Fraser and John Robbins. Mr Gunn gave an admirable address and Rev. John Robbins supplemented his remarks by a most touching figure to the memory of the late Colonel Tupper. After the services were over, friends passed around the bier and gave the last look of love

on him who has been so universally respected by all. The death of Colonel Tupper has left a blank in this county that will be very hard to fill. All spoke of him with the greatest respect, feeling that the district of Stewiacke has lost a most valuable member of society, and the County of Colchester on of its ablest men. - (Truro Daily News - Friday Dec 21, 1894) On 10 Aug 1855 when Eliakim was 26, he married Elizabeth Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton (ca 1810-) & Elizabeth Gammell (ca 1811-12 May 1883). Born in 1834. Elizabeth died on 4 Jun 1902; she was 68. Her daughter, Mrs. L.M. Ellis, of town had been at her bedside for some time, faithfully nursing the much beloved mother in her last illness. Mrs. Tupper was 68 years of age. George Robert died on 28 Jun 1963; he was 68. Residence: Brookside. Chronicle Herald 6/29/1963 The body of a 65-year-old Colchester County man, who drowned Thursday night, was recovered yesterday morning. George Bartlett of Bible Hill, near Truro, drowned when the boat he was in, over-turned in Northumberland Strait near Marshville, Pictou County. Accompanying Mr. Bartlett was his granddaughter's husband, Robert Cumming Cook, also of Bible Hill, who managed to remain with the boat and reach shore safely. The men were 200 yards off shore when the accident occurred at about 9:30 when tides were high and the water rough. RCMP said Mrs. Cook was visiting in a summer cottage on the shore and heard cries for help from the water. Dragging operations yesterday morning were hampered by high winds and shifting tides. The body was located at 11:10. Pictou RCMP were not certain what caused the boat to overturn but estimated high winds were probably mainly responsible. Medical examiner Dr. S.D. Dunn of Pictou ordered an autopsy which was performed at Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow yesterday, by Dr. N. Park.
