Robert Hamilton 1 . Born on 8 Nov 1734 in Armagh, Ireland. Robert died in Truro, Colchester Co., NS, in Dec 1814; he was 80. Robert, with his wife, 5 children, younger brother Hants and at least one nephew (probably William Hamilton and his wife Margory who settled in Onslow, NS), emigrated to Halifax Nova Scotia in March of the year 1771 on "The Hope". From Halifax they went to Truro in the fall of the same year. There he secured a grant of land about three miles up the Salmon River from Truro. It was known as Wilson's Mountain and was near Tucker's Mills, now know as Murray's Siding. The ancestry of Robert was found in "A History of the House of Hamilton", by Lt. Col. George Hamilton, a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England, 1933. The Nova Scotia link was reported to Hamilton by Mrs. Innes and Mrs. Rupert H. Cobbold of Montreal, descendents of Pierce Stevens Hamilton (son of Robert, of William, Brookfield, Nova Scotia), barrister and journalist of Halifax and an early advocate of the Confederation of Canada, born 1826, died in Halifax about 1896, through his son Percy St. Clair Hamilton, writer and journalist in Nova Scotia and later in Montreal, born 1862, removed to Montreal in 1899 and died there in 1926. They claim that a manuscript pedigree was in the treasured possession of the family for several generations, showing the ancestor of this branch to be John Hamilton, son of Gavin Hamilton of Bally-gally, Ireland, third son of Rev. Hans Hamilton, vicar of Dunlop, of the Raploch, Scotland family. The manuscript then suggests that Rev. Archibald of Armagh and William were sons of John (son of Gavin), and Robert, the immigrant, was a son of William. However, the pedigree of the Hamiltons of Ballygally shows that Gavin had three sons, Archibald, Rev. James, and Richard (no John) and that Rev. James had 15 children of whom only one son, Rev. Archibald of Armagh, lived to maturity. Lt. Col. 1 For Robert Hamilton’s ancestry, please see http://www.gofffamilyhistory.ca/HamiltonColchesterNovaScotia.pdf

1. Robert Hamilton1. Lt. Col.

Hamilton suggests by way of an explanation that John in the Nova Scotia pedigree may be an error for Rev. James and that William was another survivor of Rev. James 15 children. However, the genealogy suggests this cannot be so. Rev. James was born in 1601, and his grandson Robert, the immigrant, was born in 1734. This surely is not correct! More plausible is that John, father of William and grandfather of Robert, the immigrant, was another son of Rev. James (not the same person) and hence grandson of Gavin. This suggests that Rev. Archibald of Armagh, brother of William, was a nephew of Rev. Archibald of Armagh (in 1673), son of Rev. James, i.e., that there were two Rev. Archibald Hamilton's, not one. Despite the missing generation, we can still assume from the old Nova Scotia manuscript pedigree that Robert, the immigrant, descends from Gavin of Ballygally. A family letter has been found, as follows: Feb 23, 1790, Ireland. "Dear Brothers, This comes to let you know that I am in good health, and my family at present, thanks to God. I hope that this will find you and families the same. I will acquaint you that your sister Jane is dead, and her daughter, Nancy. Also your brother David. Your brother Archibald is in good health. You may let Esther know that her sister Simpson is dead, and her mother. I had an account since you wrote, that you were all well. The rest of the _?_ and John Rowan are still in good health. I hope that you will write as soon as this comes to your hand, and please to tell us of the affairs of that country, and how you would advise my sons as the are thinking of going to it if you would send them any encouragement. Please let me know how John Hamilton's daughter is (Note: this would be Mrs. Bulmer of Brookfield, NS). The Fergusons are all well and they will write you. I have written you several times, but received no answer these two years. I have nothing more to inform you of, only that there has been some disturbances of these three years past between the Protestants and the Papists. Every means has been taken to settle them my gentle means, but cannot say that this has come to an end yet. My wife and family all join with me in sending our best wishes. Farewell, I am, Dear brother, your affectionate brother. (sgd) William Hamilton. This letter was from Robert's brother William in Ireland. There is no envelope, merely the letter folded over and addressed to William or Hants Hamilton, Halifax. It had been re-addressed to Cornwallis. A large figure 8 indicated that the postage collected was 8 pence. In 1757 when Robert was 22, he married Agnes (Nancy) Ferguson. Born on 5 Mar 1739 in Armagh, Ireland. Agnes (Nancy) died in Upper Stewiacke, Col. Co., NS, in 1835; she was 95. Died at the home of her youngest son Hants. They had the following children: 2 i. William (28 Dec 1758-20 Jan 1838) 3 ii. Mary (21 Jan 1761-20 Aug 1847) iii. Margaret. Born on 4 Oct 1763. She was never married. 4 iv. Robert (16 Feb 1765-Dec 1815) 5 v. John (31 Jul 1768-31 Jul 1835) vi. Archibald. Born on 19 Mar 1771 in At Sea Enroute To Canada. Archibald died in Young.

He was never married. Archibald died unmarried. 6 vii. George (5 Jan 1774-13 Sep 1842) viii. Agnes (Died as Child). Born on 26 Apr 1776 in Truro, Colchester Co., NS. Agnes died in

Family of Robert Hamilton (1) & Agnes (Nancy) Ferguson

2. William Hamilton (Robert1). Born on 28 Dec 1758 in Sagahn, Vicars Cairn, Co. Armagh, Ireland. William died in Brookfield, Nova Scotia, on 20 Jan 1838; he was 79. Residence: Brookfield, NS. Excerpts- from Longworth’s Book below pertaining to William Hamilton of Brookfield chapter 4- Brookfield. “It was first settled in the year 1784, 'by William Hamilton and Daniel Moore -Hamilton was born in County Armagh, Ireland, on December 28th, 1758. He emigrated to this province in 1770. His father, brothers Robert and John, and his sister, accompanied him. They came out in the Schooner "Hopewell". Captain Neil McGowan……. Hamilton's log cabin was eight miles from any other except Moore's, and was close to a spring, where his horse drank whenever he chose. To the cabin there was annexed a kind of rough shed as a shelter for the horse. One cold winter's evening, a half-frozen Irishman put up at this forest abode for a night's lodging. During the first part of the night, he kept Hamilton awake by complaining of his feet being frozen, and expressed a wish that the devil had them. About this time, the horse puts its head through the rude window of the hut, and made a loud snort. The Irishman, greatly alarmed, exclaimed, "What is that?" Hamilton adroitly replied, "The devil after your feet!" The result proved, as may be imagined, that Hamilton was allowed to sleep in quietness, the remainder of the night. Until Hamilton got a wife to bake his bread and mend his clothes, he was under obligations to Mrs. Moore for her help. She went to his cabin every Monday morning and baked a loaf which supplied him for a week. After kneading the dough, she formed it into a beautiful large cake of an oval form, two or three inches thick, swept clean a hot part of the hearth, and there laid it. She then spread over it, a thin layer of fine cold ashes, and over that a thick layer of hot ashes, mixed with live burning coals. When the bread had lain long enough, with a shovel the ashes were removed, and it was taken off the hearth. After a little agitation to shake off the ashes, it was wiped with a cloth, much cleaner that those who bake in brick ovens, or cooking stoves could expect. On the 29th January 1789, Hamilton married Louisa Thompson, daughter of Aaron Thompson of North River Onslow. On one occasion Mrs. Hamilton was six months in Brookfield without seeing the face of another woman, save her own, and that reflected by a pool of pure spring water…. When any settler left his hut for any length of time, he invariably set a trap in the fireplace and was sure to find a martin in it on his return…….. Brookfield, in common with some other parts of the province, was visited by a tremendous freshet on the 8th day of September 1792. There have been several heavy ones since. It is generally admitted by the most aged inhabitants that none has done the country so much injury as the one that deluged the land at that time. During its progress, Hamilton was rather amused at his and Downing's grain being swept away. Downing remarked that, when the last sheaf went, he would not laugh. They exerted themselves to save what they could, but the waters rapidly increased, till the grain on higher lands, and further from the brook were carried away, and not a solitary sheaf remained. After the freshet, Hamilton found other amusement in which Downing took part. It was in reaping the unmown grain, much embedded with sand. In doing so they destroyed all their sickels. This year Downing and Archibald left….. In the year 1792 the Brookfield settlers, in conjunction with the people of Truro, experienced much annoyance in the location of the portion of the great Pictou Road then opened, and leading through both places. Before the road was established there were two bridle paths or blazed tracks, one the present road leading from Lower Village beyond Brookfield, the other, that from Truro called Young's Road, meeting the first at a place known as "Tuckers Clearing".One of these tracks was to be opened at the public expense, and to form part of the Pictou Road. Government left it to the Truro, Brookfield and Lower Village people to determine which should have the preference. The Lower Villagers, headed by old Lieut. Johnson, insisted on the former being established, whilst the

Truro and Brookfield people were strongly in favor of the latter route. It was finally settled among them by abet of five gallons of rum that a Truro man would walk the line his people wanted in less time, than the Lower Villagers could find a man to walk over that of their choice. If it proved contrary to the expectations of the Truro people, they lost the rum, and the road they desired; if otherwise, they were to have both. The day and time of starting for the walking match was settled (Long) John Archibald was chosen for the Truro route, and William Johnson for that of the Lower Village. At the time appointed both started. The Lower Villagers had a horse concealed on the track for their man to ride, which he used the best part of the way, as fast as the state of the road would admit. The result was that Johnson reached the clearing, and walked about twenty rods into Young Road towards Truro, where he met Archibald. The Lower Village route was therefore confirmed, though of late years it has been abandoned. It is now known as the Old Halifax Road. The manner in which it was obtained was kept a profound secret by the parties interested for six or seven years afterwards. Parson Waddell on being made acquainted with the circumstance in Brookfield remarked he did not hesitate to say, it was the most scandalous transaction he had ever heard of…… ]The name of Brookfield was not a settled fact till 1802. That year ,Dr. John Harris of Truro had occasion to attend some of its inhabitants very bad with smallpox. He addressed a letter with medicine to John Hamilton, Brookfield, in which he said, "1 have heard your village spoken of as Brookfield. It must be known by some name, so I have addressed my letter to Brookfield". The name was given by Hamilton and Moore, first settlers, from a brook running through their meadow. Mr. Archibald Hamilton of Brookfield is the youngest son of the former. His father died January 20, 1838. His was buried in the village graveyard, and was the first interment at whose grave, a headstone was erected.” On 29 Jan 1789 when William was 30, he married Louisa Thomson, daughter of Canon Aaron Thomson. Co., NS, on 16 Mar 1940; she was 52. daughter of David Sullivan They had the following children: i. William. Born on 27 May 1924 in Upper Stewiacke, Col. Co., NS. William died in

Lethbridge, AB, on 25 Jun 2016; he was 92. Bill Hamilton, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and

friend, passed away June 5, 2016 peacefully in his sleep with his daughter Carla by his side and his family nearby. Bill had just proudly celebrated his 92nd birthday with his family one week earlier. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Caroline (Lonsdale), grandson Shayne Hamilton and his sister Ruby Wood, his son-in-law Charles Prongua, his mother Mabel (Sullivan), and his father Lyman. Bill is survived by his four children and their families: E.L. (Bud) Hamilton (Claire Cadieux), Marv Hamilton (Sherry Hayes), Kathy Prongua and Carla Hastie. He was a cherished grandpa to 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brother-in-law Herb Kuehn.

Born in Upper Stewiacke, Nova Scotia on a hay, dairy farm with woodland, Bill had just one sister Ruby, two years younger. He was a Boy Scout, member of a Dairy association, 4H member and was an active member in his church. Tragically, by the time he was 16 years old, he had lost both of his parents. Afterwards, Bill graduated from the Agriculture College in Truro.

In 1948, Bill heeded the “call of the west” and was Alberta bound where he worked in agriculture for a number of farmers in Southern Alberta, eventually working for brothers Ed and John Lonsdale in Warner. That is where he met their sister Caroline and after a whirlwind romance they were married and had a loving relationship which lasted 60 years. After starting their family in Warner with Bud, they moved to Skiff where Marv, Kathy and Carla were born. Then it was off to the big city of Lethbridge where Bill continued working with agricultural machinery and obtained his Heavy Duty Mechanic license while working for Don Dalke at Southland Ford. Bill retired in 1989 after working with the Dept. of Highways.

Bill was involved with the local chapter of the Independent Order of Foresters, eventually becoming the Chief Ranger. He was also a member of the Labor Club. Bill relished the time spent with his family, many pets, camping, curling, dancing, fishing and gardening where he took particular pride in his potatoes and corn. A very kind, generous and passive person, he kept people listening closely with his ‘maritime mumble’. Quick to flash his wonderful smile with his baby blue eyes, he was a true gentleman, and much beloved, especially by his family, whom he cherished dearly.

Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland. Vi Bustin lived in Portland, ME, and we visited with her and her brother Dan in the late 60’s. Dan Cupid Enters Marriage of Three Portland Brothers to Three Portland Sisters on Credit Page of His Ledger Portland Evening Express and Advertiser, Saturday, July 2, 1910 "That designing little son of Venus, Dan Cupid, proved his unerring aim with his love-poisoned arrows the past week when he completed a task which he began years ago in the childhood of his victims, and which he one-third completed six years ago; and, his task finished, three brothers are united in marriage with three sisters. This is a situation unique in the annals of Dan Cupid's ledger, and as the clever little god declared to a reporter last night, it is one of the handsomest pieces of work he has ever brought to so happy a climax. The couple who married six years ago are Mr. and Mrs. Fred P. Bustin of the Deering District. She was Miss Melvina M. Hamilton. And the two additional couples who have linked hearts "until death do you part" are Thomas M. Bustin and Catherine Hamilton Bustin, Benjamin B. Bustin and Agnes Hamilton Bustin. From childhood the three brothers and the three sisters have been friends. From the time when the little girls petted their dolls and the boys hauled the little girls and their dolls about in their carts, until the completion of school days and the removal of the families from Nova Scotia to this City, the friendship has continued. The second couple were due to be married last Wednesday in Portsmouth, N.H., and a reception was planned for them Wednesday evening at

the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bustin in Deering. Benjamin Bustin and Miss Agnes Hamilton accompanied the couple to Portsmouth for the marriage. En route, Cupid from his lately acquired bi-plane, spied Benjamin and Miss Agnes at an open window and let fly an arrow. At arrival at that New Hampshire town, which so often serves as a Gretna Green for Portland couples City Clerk Lamont Hilton was located, and Thomas and his bride were married. While this was going on the other couple held a whispered conversation in a corner of the clerk's office, and to the surprise of the first married pair announced that they, too, were to wed. Returning to Portland the four decided to keep the second Portsmouth affair a secret until the close of the reception to Thomas Bustin and his bride. To help the deception Mrs. Agnes Bustin even took the wedding ring from her finger during the reception. But Thomas and his bride were too happy in the congratulations showered upon them to keep the secret and the story began to circulate through the host of friends at the reception. The health of all three couples was then toasted. All three couples are now living under one roof in the Deering District, and all agree that Cupid is the best friend they could wish to have." (Portland Evening Express and Advertiser, Saturday, July 2, 1910) On 1 May 1907 when Melvina Jane was 20, she married Fred Parker Bustin, son of Samuel Bustin & Mary Ross, in Portland, Maine.
