SEPTEMBER 2019 How well do you really know someone?

In early 2005, I remember reading a news story about man named Dennis Rader. Born in 1945, Dennis was a devoted family man who resided in Wichita, Kansas. He had served in the Air Force. He married his wife with whom he had two children, and as a family they attended an LCMS congregation. Dennis was a Boy Scout troop leader. He was the chairman of his congregation when the news story broke about him.

You see, Dennis lived a double life. Dennis was the “BTK killer,” a serial killer who murdered 10 people in the Wichita area from 1974 to 1991. At the time of the murders, this serial killer would leave clues behind and mail letters to taunt authorities. And when the 30th anniversary of one of his murders aired on local television, Dennis’ psychosis apparently reignited. After years of inactivity, he once again had the urge to taunt authorities with information about that murder that was not released to the public. His undoing was that he had used a floppy disk from his church, erasing the church files, upon which he put his own data documents to send to police. The police were able to recover the deleted files, trace the disk back to the church, and ended up putting the pieces together and discovering Dennis was the serial killer they sought all those years.

When that news story broke in 2005, naturally his wife, children, and church community could not believe this man committed these murders. But it was true. Dennis confessed to the murders and gave details only the murderer would know.

This is one of the most shocking stories of evil and deception that I have ever heard. And this story really stood out for me because I remember being horrified that this man was an active churchgoer in an LCMS church, serving in the highest position of lay leadership! My heart goes out to the victim’s families, his family, and his church community.

Now, that certainly is an extreme negative example of things we do not know about people. Thankfully, such extreme examples are not the norm. What is common in our lives are stories of faith and God working in our lives.

Back in April we had a faith sharing event dubbed “F4,” where we gathered after church one Sunday for about 30 minutes to hear one another’s stories of how God has worked in our lives. That day I heard some encouraging stories of how God has worked in the past. Nothing heroic, nothing necessarily that extraordinary, but encouraging nonetheless to hear stories of God’s activity in the lives of people I know, stories I had never heard before. I now know those people a little bit better. And I more fully see God at work in the lives of his people. And seeing God at work in the lives of others helps me to see God more clearly at work in my life.

And I’m a pastor! Let me tell you, if this faith sharing time can have such an impact on me, it can have the same effect for you. Like last time, you don’t have to share anything if you don’t want to. You will in no way be pressured to share anything. Even if you do not feel like sharing anything, please plan to stay and listen to the stories of others and realize how encouraged you can be in your Christian faith through this special time of fellowship. See the article titled “Trinity’s 2nd Powerful F4 Event” in this newsletter for more information, and plan to join us on September 22nd.

Come to Hear About Relationship with the One Who Knows Your

Name—Join “Tea Thyme with God” Bible Study!

The group will meet Monday morning, September 9, and again on Monday morning September 23, at 9:30 A.M. at the church to study the Bible Study series,

“SIP, SAVOR AND DRINK DEEPLY-Receive God’s Overflowing Gifts.” The participants will begin their

study on Session 5—My Portion and My Cup: Full-Flavored (Relationships).”

As we continue to examine our portion for our cup, let’s take a look at the abundance of its contents from another angle. Our cups are filled with the rich, Full-Flavored relationship we get to enjoy with the One who knows our names and expressed His love for us across the pages of His Word. God has called us into a saving relationship with Him by the Gospel—by His grace in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 2:14). Sure, our barista buddies call us by name, label our cup with love, and learn a little more about us each time we meet, by God knows us completely and loves us with an everlasting love. He created each of us in His image and sent His Son to the cross to save us from our sins. He calls you and me His children and He will never forget us.

You are known! You are loved!

Looking Ahead: Monday, October 7 Monday, October 21

All women are welcome and encouraged to come. Please bring your Bible and favorite tea/coffee cup and share a cup of friendship in Christian fellowship. If you have a questions please call Joyce Wanless, Bible study leader, 483-4283.

GROWing in Our Faith GROW had a very busy summer full of new challenges and adventures! We welcomed lots of new kids to our family and enjoyed a final summer with a handful of our kids that were aging out. Our kids got the chance to meet some new friends from Pawnee, New Berlin, Virden, and Farmersville that they wouldn’t normally during the school year. Our ministry continues to spread and GROW as evidenced in our full house during the summer! Getting to give even more children the opportunity to feel God’s love was such a blessing! One of our goals was to experience new things, so our field trips and activities were focused on seeing different parts of the community and experiencing places they might never get a chance! There was a whole week exploring different careers through some learning and of course play. We even had to rescue a baby from a fire. We were fortunate enough to get a tour of the Springfield Police Department that week. Kids sharpened their problem solving skills during a special myth buster’s week. They enjoyed using the scientific method to prove or disprove common

myths. They especially loved anything we got to explode! That week we visited the Decatur Children’s Museum which opened their minds up to new possibilities even more! The Kidzeum in Springfield early in the summer was an interactive and wonderful learning experience. We were always active with kids coming up with their own games and two special weeks testing their mental and physical skills. During challenge week, the kids were always up to see if they could break a record! Ninja Warrior week was modeled after the popular show and the kids enjoyed using their bodies and minds to navigate through challenges. As always we mixed our fun with learning, even with special enrichment time to make sure we didn’t slip into the summertime learning slump. Now we’ve been back to school for a week and are getting back into the swing of things (still enrolling!). We are happy to still have our visits with Dinah and chapel on Mondays. Now we get back into our small group lessons focusing on our faith. This year we are following the LCMS theme of live Joy:Fully. We are taking to heart that we need Christ in our heads, hearts, and actions. This will be shown in our lessons and chapels each week. Dinah has become such a special part of our family that we are going to learn some more about comfort dogs this year. Each week we will have a new comfort dog to study and will memorize their verse, focusing on the meaning behind it. We hope to show that the Church has a reach beyond church services. They see Dinah help them and hear about her adventures, the church is much more than a building, they, like Dinah, can help spread its mission. I’d also like to send out a special thanks and blessings to those who have donated to the tuition fund. Our children are in an especially difficult time of need. We are their safe place and comfort. Thank you for helping us continue our mission.

BASIC Typical Lutheran Question “What does this mean?”

Well, the “Internet Slang” dictionary says it means “uncool, boring, simple, and unoriginal”. As in “That girl is so basic.” It is a derogatory term. Some people may agree with this definition. Sometimes it is “boring” to go over the basics yet again!

Merriam Webster defines “basic” as “something that is fundamental, forming an essential foundation”. This is the definition we will dive into.

While some elements of Christian Education may seem “simple or boring”, they are absolutely “fundamental and form and essential foundation”.

The foundation of the Christian faith is of course Jesus Christ. He is the “Word made flesh” (John 1:14) Jesus Christ is the very living Word of God. Our firm foundation in the faith is the Word of God! In BASIC ministry, we will build on the firm foundation of the Word of God. We will explore the Bible together and encourage one another as Brothers and Sisters in Christ to Believe and Stand in Christ.

Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the Word of the Lord STANDS forever.”

1 Thessalonians 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as you are doing.”

It’s “Back to School Time” and we are ready for the new school year to begin! Miss Emily will be returning as our classroom aide and van driver. We are excited about our plans for the year. We use the Jolly Phonics Curriculum for literacy, but we also incorporate Bible-based curriculum from Concordia Publishing House. Combining the curriculums helps ensure our students grow not only academically and physically but also socially, emotionally, and spiritually in their faith relationship with Jesus as their Savior. This month, we will be learning about school routines, our names, and that God, who created the world, also created each one of us. We will learn about taking care of gardens as we tend to our church garden. Because of the Fall into sin with Adam and Eve, we have to weed and work hard. We are separated from God, but thankfully, He provided a way to be united with Him through His Son, Jesus, who died for our sins and rose victorious for our sake. Through faith in Jesus, our sins are forgiven and we are restored to our Heavenly Father. In September, we also have a field trip planned to visit The Apple Barn in Chatham. This is always a fun and educational time. The children get a tour of the apple orchard and get to taste fresh apple juice and apples off the tree. We will also have monthly Chapel Chats throughout the year with Pastor Kaufmann leading us in September. Please join me in praying for a safe, healthy, fun, and educational year for all our students and staff! God’s blessings, Amy Kaufmann, Teacher

Believe And Stand In Christ

AS Brothers And Sisters In Christ

Making Disciples for Life

1ST & 3RD Wednesday each month 6:30-8PM

Please join us! In the ever-changing worldview and culture, it is more important than ever that we “get back to the basics” and equip Christians to Believe and Stand in Christ as Brothers and Sisters in Christ. Through sermons and Bible study, Trinity will equip Christians with the Truth of God as found in the Bible and embolden believers to stand firm on those truths.

1. 6:30-6:45 - EVERYONE meets in the sanctuary for devotion – This is a wonderful,

intergenerational time of getting to know each other and supporting each other as

Women’s Bible Study Focuses

on Hymns of Comfort As we sing hymns, we might miss some of significance of the words for our spiritual and earthly welfare. Therefore, there are benefits to spending time just focusing on the hymn words. This is what the Wednesday Evening Women’s Bible study group will be doing during the month of May. We will also be comforted by looking at the scriptural foundation for those hymns. You will receive a copy of both the hymn words and the Scripture passages that will make it easy for you to share this comfort with people who might be experiencing problems in their life. Beginning September 4, all women are invited to join us for this weekly Bible study on Wednesdays from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the conference room.

Well, another month has come and gone. Summer is almost over and fall is on the way. I visited with all my good friends from the G.R.O.W. Summer program one more time. Please pray for them as they enter the new school year. Some of them have some challenges in their lives, and I do my best to bring comfort to them and smiles to their faces. On August 23rd, I went to the 206th Regional Deployment at Southwind Park. I met a lot of new friends, many of them are soldiers and their family members. It’s hard for them to say goodbye and be gone from home for such a long time. Please pray for them as well, we are so blessed to have them always be ready and willing to keep our country strong and safe, and to help people around the world. Next week I go back to Chatham High School to see my friends that I met last year!

Well I gotta go…..Paws on the ground!!!
