Adventure Background

Many years ago the eccentric wizard Bortanfal helped an equally eccentric gnome named Aldofin to create a magical tower in which valuable magical items could be stored. However soon after the tower was completed Aldofin made some drastic mistakes during magical research and not only killed himself but also shattered the ground beneath the tower, sinking it down until water poured in to surround it.

Now only the very top of the tower emerges from the waves. However records from an apprentice who was present when the tower was created shows how an item might be recovered from the vaults.

Adventure Summary

The players must penetrate to the heart of the tower, using stealth and cunning to reach the vaults. There they can retrieve an item and fight or flee their way back to the surface before fighting a final battle atop the tower.

Battle maps for every encounter can be found at the end of this module.

Plot Hook

This adventure begins when your players find a letter attached to a small amulet. This can either be dropped as loot in another encounter or they can be hired by a patron to perform the mission and given the letter and amulet by that patron.

The letter and amulet describe how to break into an abandoned but once secure vault and steal one of the items within.

The full text of the letter is presented on the next page. On the back of the letter tell the players that they see a map showing the location of the tower. The tower should be placed in any suitable body of water that is convenient for your campaign.

The players can hire some fishermen to take them out to the tower for 10gp, or make their own alternative arrangements.

Amulet of Screams

Aura: faint evocation; CL 1st

Slot: neck; Price: 50gp; Weight: 1lb

This amulet is made from blue crystal hung on a leather thong. The crystal itself has been intricately carved but does not look expensive. If held up and then whistled through as a standard action the amulet shatters and is destroyed but generates an Ear-Piercing scream as per the spell.

The Vault

You see a letter written on fine parchment in an even and elegant hand. The letter describes the steps needed to breach a tower and retrieve an item from the vaults within and is signed only by the letter G. On the back is a map showing the location of the tower, while attached to the letter at the top is an amulet made from blue crystal.
