  • From the former

    Current Grand Knight

Hi Guys, Coming up we will have a 1 hour DVD on

the life and beatification of Fr. Solanus Casey, a Detroit priest. The event, in the Family Center on Tuesday Nov 7 at 7 PM, will be open to spouses/family and the whole parish. Coffee and cookies will follow. Anyone who wishes to bring cookies, please let DGK Steve Toerne know.

And don't forget Saturday Night Alive on November 11th, the monthly Big Breakfast on the 12th, or the Feather Party on the 17th.

A very important event on Saturday Nov 18 will be the K of C Memorial Mass at 5 PM. I ask you to volunteer to usher, distribute, greet or lector at this Mass as we would like as many of our members to participate as possible (call Dcn. Ed Irelan). Our Chaplain, Deacon Ed, will assist the Celebrant and we will remember all brother knights from our Council who have died. Afterward, Fr. Keith will give a presentation from his recent Philippines trip. The talk will be in the Family Center and be open to knights, spouses/family, and all parishioners. We will have heavy snacks, so if you want to volunteer for an appetizer/snack, please call DGK Steve.

The December 12 Social Meeting is also a big night for us. Keep Christ in Christmas poster judging, collection of money/gift cards for our local Christmas families, signing Christmas cards for Ohio Veterans, and a short address from our interning seminarian, Al Beltz. Cookies and snacks, of course. Bring spouses/family/friends (including someone you have asked to join the Knights). This is a very good example of what we do.

Please accept a personal invitation from me to attend a business meeting (4th Tuesday at 7 PM), which starts with a rosary.

    Thanks! Frank Kohler, Grand Knight

Remember the unborn, and pray for our nation.

    P. S.: Thanks to our worthy Grand Knight

for catching the error in this column's title!

    From the

    Field Agent

Supreme bestows various orders on Councils based on members signed up and insurance policies sold to members. One is the Father Michael J. McGivney Award, given to councils that sign up ten new members in a fraternal year. Another is the Founders Award, given for having three members join the Order's insurance programs in a fraternal year. We have a ways to go on the former, but we're well towards getting the latter.

As your professional insurance agent, risk management is my specialty. Let’s talk about how to protect your income, your retirement needs and your family’s financial future. I look forward to helping us grow in fraternity in any way that I can. I’m at 419-447-0404 ext 314, or [email protected]. Call me – let’s talk.

After the Mass, Father Keith will be giving a presentation in the Family Center on his most recent trip to Lemon. Contact Deacon Steve if you'd like to bring refreshments.

    Ideas Invited

Grand Knight Frank is soliciting input on a couple of possible future projects involving maintenance at the Parish cemetery and reading for Parish preschoolers.

Financial Secretary Ed Fiscus is soliciting

interest in ordering KofC apparel. Many styles of shirts, hats and more are available. If the Council can place a single order for everyone's shirts, it will cost much less in shipping per shirt.

    Now

    Showing!

All are invited to a screening on November 7 of a movie (title unknown to your editor) about the life of Venerable Father Solanus Casey, who will be beatified at a Mass at Ford Field in Detroit on November 18. Location is the Family Center, time 7:00 PM. Light

  • refreshments will be served; contact Deputy Grand Knight Steve to help.

    Feeding the

    Hungry

The Advent Food Drive will run from Sunday, December 3rd through Sunday, December 17th. Donations of canned goods, pasta, cereals, juice, bottled water and toilet paper will be received. Dcn. Ed seeks volunteers to move the donations from the Church to their designated storage area after each Mass, and to delivery them to Helping Hands of St, Louis on Sunday, December 17, following the 11:00 Mass

If you shop at Kroger's, please participate in the Round Up program that lets you donate your change to a fund for the hungry. Kroger's matches the donation. In theory, cashiers are supposed to ask you to donate, but if they don't, feel free to tell them.

    Keep Praying!

Benediction will be offered every Tuesday evening during Advent. Details TBA.

All are invited to pray the Most Holy

Rosary in the Church before morning Mass. Normal time is 7:30 weekdays. A few of you are regulars, but certainly there are more who can take this time for prayer and the Mass that follows. Mass usually is over at about 8:30.

    Big Breakfast Update

Financial results of the first Big Breakfast for the season were announced at the October business meeting. The outcome was discouraging in the face of it, but expenses included supplies that were purchased for the next several breakfasts.

The next Big Breakfast is November 12. Shifts are 8 to 10 and 10 until end of cleanup, usually about noon. (Please note the corrected times.) Please come and help out; and please support the Breakfast by bringing lots of people to enjoy the food!

Your editor neglected to mention the price in previous issues. Adult meals are $8.00, kids are $3.00

The serving schedule that was adopted last year, 9:30-11:30, remains in effect.

Warden Randy has agreed to chair the full schedule of Big Breakfasts, but is seeking assistant directors for all meals.

    Fixing the Church Garage

    Doors – and More!

In addition to the garage door project that was initially discussed at the September business meeting, we may also be working on the fence around the parking lot.

The chain link fence that is now in place needs repair. Replacement was considered, but the City will allow only a paneled decorative fence that is unsuitable for a school area. According to preliminary discussion at the October business meeting, repair and repainting of the existing fence is the current best option.

As with the garage work, details are to be discussed at Business meetings over the winter.

    Knights at the

    Rink

Tentatively, we will be going to the Walleye game on January 14 at 5:30. Past Grand Knight John is coordinating this with Father Jeff to allow the Parish 8th graders to go. We will pay their admission, they provide their own transportation.

    Fourth Degree News

A White Elephant Dinner will be held December 16th at Greystone Hall, 29101 Hufford Road, Perrysburg. Social hour starts at 5:30, dinner at 6:30. Bring a “white elephant” gift, wrapped, to be auctioned off. Proceeds benefit the Bowling Green Pregnancy Center.

A Reverse Raffle will be held February 3, also at Greystone Hall. Doors open 5:15 PM. Tickets are $25.00, and benefit the Monsignor Yates Assembly's scholarship fund. Prizes are $1,000, $500, $250 and $100. Order tickets from Deputy Grand Knight Steve.

Winner! And he was at the Meeting!

At the end of each business meeting, a 50/50 drawing of sorts is held for a cash prize consisting of donations from the attendees. Half the pot goes to Pennies for Heaven, and half to the winner. The winner is drawn from a list of all Council members, and the winner has to be present to claim the pot. If the winner is not present, the pot carries forward to the next meeting. Deputy Grand Knight Steve Toerne was at the October meeting, and took home a $54 prize!

Come to the next business meeting, November 28! You might win! (But don't come just for the money!)

    News that Doesn't Fit Anywhere

In case you were wondering about the Parish's new sign on Conant that we helped fund: Yes, it was going to be a digital sign with programmable messages. But according to discussion at the October business meeting, it turned out that the City would not allow such a sign, and the illuminated sign that was installed instead is the most that was allowed. But even if it isn't what was wanted, it's still a huge improvement over the old sign.

    Thank you!

From Deacon Denny, for the ordination gift and your prayers From Deacon Denny, belatedly, for funding the purchase of basketballs and soccer balls for the children in Lemon. He reports the balls were very eagerly received and used. From Deputy Grand Knight Steve, to all who helped with the October Big Breakfast and the Rummage Sale. To DGK Steve, for seeing the Deacon Joe project through to completion. To all who have helped us and our work, especially those we have failed to thank. We all need to say “Thank You” more often!

  • A Million Prayers

    for Lemon

As part of the Parish's outreach to the people of Lemon (pronounced LAY-mon) in the Philippines, your Council is coordinating a Spiritual Bouquet program to extend to them encouragement and prayerful support. Rather than a gathering of flowers, these bouquets are made up of prayers and actions offered for these brothers and sisters in the faith. Our goal will be to collect 1,000,000 prayers and works of mercy.

The effort started in June, and several area prisons are participating. Deacon Ed is furnishing pledge cards for the effort. He and Warden Randy are the official statisticians, so please let them know how you are contributing. As of October 24, approximately 30,000 prayers and acts of mercy had been tabulated.

Thanks to all who are participating!

    Help Wanted!

Light refreshments are needed for the November 7 movie event, and “heavy refreshments” (draw your own conclusions) are needed for Father Keith's presentation following the Knight's Mass on the 18th. Contact Deputy Grand Knight Steve to volunteer.

Help is needed for Saturday Night Alive on

November 11. Deacon Ed seeks volunteers for all lay

duties at the Knights' Mass, Saturday, November 18. Contact him to volunteer.

Dcn. Ed also seeks volunteers to move

Advent food drive donations from the Church to the designated storage area after each Mass from December 3 through December 17, and to delivery the donations on the 17th.

Warden Randy seeks assistant directors for each month's Big Breakfast, October through May.

Looking for a rewarding career? Wayne

Vreeland is seeking applicants for KofC Life Insurance field agents. Applicants must be Catholic and at least 18 years old. 419-356-8377 or [email protected].

“Help wanted” isn't just for what the Council and the parish need done – it also applies to all of us Knights as well. If you are in distress, or know someone who is, please contact Deacon Ed, our Council Chaplain. As Knights, we're all here for one another.

Deacon Denny is collecting men's shoes and coats for Helping Hands of St. Louis. Please contact him to make donations, or bring them to our meetings. (He doesn't need women's shoes – they have plenty!)

    From the

    Editor

Splash! I was born and raised on the northwest

coast of California. Don’t believe the hype: The California coast is not all palm trees and sunshine! My end of it is wild and rough, with beaches interspersed with rocky cliffs. Winter is marked by powerful storms that sweep in off the ocean.

As you’ve seen from hurricane coverage, a storm at sea generates heavy surf. With one exception, the storms of my homelands were nothing close to hurricanes, but the waves they generated were still significant. These waves would smash against the cliffs and fill the air with salt water spray. If you were standing on the cliff to watch, as I was fond of doing, the impact of the strongest waves would make the ground shake.

Since coming to the Catholic faith, I’ve been fascinated by monasticism and monastic spirituality. Way back in the 6th Century, St. Benedict composed his Rule, the Regula Benedicti, which still serves as a foundational document for the governance and conduct of

  • religious life. It contains a great deal of wisdom that can apply to all of us, including this, one of his “tools for good works”:

“As soon as wrongful thoughts come into your heart, dash them against Christ and disclose them to your spiritual father.”

When I first read this, I recalled how utterly those powerful storm waves were dashed against the rocky cliffs. That is what I now envision happening to evil thoughts: Pulverized into spray against the rock of Christ so that all that remains is the tang of salt in the air.

    Peace and good, Tom
