MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK
SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
PASTOR’S NOTES
Shortly we hope to have a Youth Minister join our parish family. The search committee is concluding its extensive work with interviews of several fine candidates, completing one of the goals of our Parish Prophetic Plan! As this becomes a possibility, we want to express our deep gratitude to Terri Simeoni who has been ministering to the youth in our parish for the past several years along with her coordinating the Religious Education Program and being the Religious Education coordinator for the Day school as well. In the time that Terri has taken on this role, she has recruited and trained teens for liturgical roles. Under her leadership, each week teens serve as ushers, extraordinary ministers of communion and lectors, primarily at the 6:00 p.m. liturgy, but at the other liturgies on Saturday and Sunday as well. She has also trained the teens to participate in the Good Friday Services at 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. The First Year students participate in the Confirmation program which includes the Parent/Teen meeting, joining a Quest group, participate in the Service Fair, the Speaker Series, the Enrollment Liturgy, the Reconciliation Service, the Sponsor/candidate meeting as well as confirmation itself. Teens from St. Francis also participate and become leaders in the Tri‐Parish KAIROS Retreat program. St Francis sponsors the August retreat and being part of the retreat in the Fall and in the Spring. The QUEST program sponsors the Giving Tree, preparing tags, sorting gifts and getting the delivery truck ready to go to St. Agatha during Advent. The SOUPer Bowl of caring, Crop Walk food collection and the over night Ski Trip with others from the Archdiocese of Chicago have also been part of the teen ministry in our parish under the guidance of Terri. Add to that the High School Church League Basketball for males and for females and it is most of what has been happening with our teens
Today we return to using the green vestments of Ordinary Time on Sundays. Changing colors give a sense of the progress of faith through the seasons of life. For centuries, the number of colors and the reasons underlying them were left to local custom. Over time, we settled on six colors to express the character of a day or season: white, red, green, violet, black, and rose. Black is seldom seen these days, replaced by white or violet. Rose, really a dusty pink shade, appears at most twice a year. What does the color green suggest to you? Green is new growth, olives, evergreens, glistening emeralds, ripening pears, and fields at high summer. It suggests renewal,
over the years with Terri’s efforts and with the help of many of you who have made these things happen. God Bless You, Terri, and thanks a million for your unwavering commitment and dedication to our teens as well as the ministry you have done and will continue to do as the Coordinator of Religious Education and the Director of our Religious Education Program (with 1,100 students!) Speaking of congratulations for dedication and commitment, you may have seen the “In Profile” article in The Doings in April, about Ann Marie Leader receiving the Lyons Township High School’s Vita Plena Award. Herself a gradate from LT in 1986, Ann Marie attributes her passion for teaching and treating the students in her class as her own to her mother, Mary Ann Ovnick, who was a biology teacher at the school. God Bless you, Ann Marie! Listening to the news and events in our state of Illinois and across the country these days, it is important to remember that homosexual people are as much a part of the Catholic church as everyone else and, as Pope John Paul II stated, must be treated with respect and dignity as children of God. Some folks seem to presume that homosexual people are always sexually active, which probably borders on slander, and forgets that all of us, homosexual or heterosexual, are called to live lives of chastity. Look it up. This week on Wednesday we will have a Staff Away Day, when we review the past year and set a couple of tasks for next year. We also spend time (actually most of the time!) relaxing. Next weekend we have the blessing of five of our parishioners who are fathers offer a reflection at mass. Using the scriptures, they share their own experience and stories of being a father. God bless all of you for speaking with us. Hope you’re enjoying the summer!
healing, fertility, peace, and harmony. In medieval Europe, green was the favorite color for brides! Did you know that drivers of green cars are the least likely to be stopped for speeding? Is it because of their own feelings of harmony and well being, or because law enforcement officers are filled with serenity when they see a green car whiz by? Take out a paint chart today and marvel at the many hues and names of green. The Church figured it out centuries ago: color really matters. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society’s next meeting will take place on Monday, July 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Rectory Courtyard Room.
LIVING THE TEACHINGS
OF THE CHURCH
“...the Jews remain very dear to God, for the sake of the patriarchs, since God does not take back the gifts he bestowed or the choice he made.” (Declaration on non‐Christian Religions #4)
IMPLEMENTING OUR PROPHETIC PLAN THE USHERS
In order “To Celebrate Meaningful Worship Experiences with Active Participation” (Goal II of the Prophetic Plan), many ministries are called upon. One such ministry is that of the Ushers. We at St. Francis Xavier are blessed to have a warm, welcoming team meet us each time we attend Mass. The group is made up of men, women, and young adults who often step in to help at holidays when they are home on college breaks. They dedicate their time to offer a smile as the first point of contact to parishioners and guests as we enter Church. Their presence is comforting as they meet, greet, offer assistance to those in need, direct traffic, and encourage active participation from all who gather to pray. There presently are 42 active ushers. Yet the need exists for more who want to share their own experiences of Welcome with those who come to Mass. If you would like to volunteer to assist this fine ministry, particularly at the 10:30 A.M. and Noon Masses where there is presently the most need, contact Joe Discipio, head usher, at [email protected]. St. Francis Xavier thanks its dedicated staff of ushers for continuing “to strengthen and increase participation in the liturgical ministries” (Objective C).
TAIZÉ PRAYER
Taizé Prayer is contemplative and most importantly communal, combining simple repetitive melodies that are sung by all, prayerful silence, scripture reading and intercessory prayer. This prayer can promote a kind to inner unity of person, allowing the spirit to be more open and attentive to what is essential. It is our hope that you will join us, especially at this time when our world is much in need of prayer.

WORD OF LIFE
We must never tire of clarifying misunderstanding and shedding light where there is myth and confusion, demonstrating empathy and compassion and a deeper vision...Our task is to present the truth with civility, empathy and clarity. Being champions of the Gospel of Life is about building a civilization of love. —Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Boston, homily at the Opening Mass for the 2013 National Prayer Vigil for Life, January 24, 2013

LEAVING A LEGACY ANOTHER OPTION FOR YOUR
CONSIDERATION
Several years ago, long‐time parishioner and probably our most senior active volunteer, Jim Docherty made St. Francis Xavier Parish the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. At the time Jim, now a spry 92 years old, jokingly stipulated that he has no intention of St. Francis Xavier collecting the proceeds any time soon. Jim, we hope it won’t be for another 15 years or more!
Jim is a regular supporter of the Parish and has also contributed periodically to the Parish Educational Endowment Fund. Having sent five children to the day school, Jim is a believer in and supporter of Catholic Education. Thank you, Jim Docherty for your gifts to the future!
If you would like information about how you, too, can leave a legacy, please contact Clara Jurivich, Business Manager.
FOOD PANTRY AT A GLANCE

FOOD COLLECTION
FOR MARILLAC HOUSE On Sunday, June 30, non-perishable food donations will be collected for Marillac House. Donations can be left at the side trancepts in church.
SECOND COLLECTION
RETIRED PRIESTS This weekend, we will take up a second collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. When priests retire from pastoral responsibilities, they remain ordained priests, configured through the Sacrament of Holy Orders to Christ, the head of his Body, the Church. Priests are not employees; they are fathers in Christ and brothers to all. Retired priests celebrate Mass and sacraments in hundreds of parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Their dedicated service enables many parishes to avoid reducing the number of Masses celebrated each weekend. Some retired priests are called upon to be temporary administrators of parishes. Our senior priests do this willingly as a continuation of the many years that they have faithfully served our Church. The Priests’ Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. Again this year, we have seen the cost of health care, prescription drugs, and nursing‐home care increase. In addition, the priests’ pension fund remains seriously impacted by the economic downturn. This special collection will help us continue to support our retired priests. Please be as generous as you are able.

INTERFAITH CAREER NETWORK
CRACKING THE CODE OF A JOB DESCRIPTION
As you well know, a job description can range from a few cryptic lines in an email to a 10‐page wish list on steroids. Interfaith Career Network invites you to join us on Thursday, June 20 from 7:00‐9:00 p.m. for an incredibly important discussion on deciphering the information in job postings so you truly understand what the company wants. Once you can do this, you will be able to create effective selling points about your strengths and skills in your resume, write a strong cover letter and prepare interview talking points that clearly and directly address the needs of the hiring manager. Learn valuable techniques to help you quickly identify the key strengths that are truly important to the hiring organization; information that is often buried in the paragraphs, bullet points and “corporate speak” of job descriptions. Our speaker Keith Owens, a principal at Principle Communications, is very adept at helping job seekers prepare for a variety of "selling" situations by developing audience‐focused messages and strong presentation and interviewing skills. We look forward to welcoming you at St. John of the Cross Parish Center, 5005 South Wolf Road in Western Springs. This program is open to everyone and there is no cost to attend. Interfaith Career Network (ICN) offers job support through various programs throughout the month. For further information, please visit our website at www.interfaithcareernetwork.org.

FAMILY OUTREACH MINISTRY
During the 2012‐2013 school year, the Family Outreach Ministry participated in the following projects: To kick off our year, we volunteered at the Greater Chicago Food Depository in October. Our families helped pack and sort food for the hungry. We had a great turnout of young and old, and all felt enriched by the experience. We started a new tradition last November and helped coordinate a Thanksgiving Pie Drive to benefit the SFX Food Pantry. Several families came together at the rectory to create more than 160 homemade Thanksgiving cards to accompany the pies. The director of BEDS also attended our gathering and talked to families about how we can help the homeless. On New Year’s Eve, 60 volunteers rang in the New Year with a trip to Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). Meals were packed and sent off to Haiti. After the work was done, we all gathered for a moment of prayer and reflection. In January, twenty‐five adults and children attended a private mass at the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Chapel officiated by our own Father Bob. After mass, we played a spirited game of bingo with our older friends at Bethlehem Woods. Everyone enjoyed playing bingo, chatting, and eating ice cream. It was a wonderful first time event. A repeat trip to Feed My Starving Children in March gave families another opportunity to enjoy this wonderful experience. Our session ended with us knowing that we packed enough food to feed 53 children for one year! In May, volunteers provided manpower for the Postal Service Food Drive. Food donations were transported from the LaGrange Post Office to the SFX food pantry. Sorting and organizing the food was also a part of this project. Throughout the year, families took turns providing dessert for the BEDS program guests on Monday nights at St. Francis Xavier. These treats satisfied many a sweet tooth and nourished many souls! A very special thank you to all the families that helped out. We look forward to continuing to serve those in need and we have an exciting schedule of events that we are planning for next year. We will print the schedule in the bulletin in August. Thank you for your interest and support of the St. Francis Xavier Family Outreach Ministry and we hope to see you next year!
The St. Francis Family Outreach Ministry is a program that is designed for families to teach children the gift of stewardship. Throughout the year, we offer outreach opportunities so that together you and your children can be God’s hands and feet in our community.
The St. Francis Xavier Peace & Justice Committee will meet on Monday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rectory.
For more information, please contact Nancy Ryan at 708‐354‐3049.
