DECEMBER

A Letter from our curate Rev’d David Clark

Dear Friends,As we begin 2021 there is an understandable

desire to say "good riddance" to 2020. on the contrary, 2020 will remain with us for

many years to come because it has been a life-changing, once-in-a-lifetime, and yes, a lifeaffirming time.

There has been much fear, anxiety andsuffering. some of you reading this will haveexperienced bereavement related to thepandemic. others amongst us have seen ourfinancial position change drastically and manyhave experienced the loneliness of enforcedisolation. it is wrong to seek to diminish or denythat pain; we should bring it to God, who inChrist, shares our suffering.

however, there has also been time to re-evaluate and reflect on what is important. Formany of us there has been a deeper awareness ofour community and our closest relationships. Wehave realised how important they are andrecognised that we may have taken them for

granted. i have perceived a shared understandingthat some of the other things in our busy lives thatwe considered to be vitally important beforeMarch, paled into insignificance when setalongside the sustaining place of relationships.

As Christians, we believe, indeed we know, that the most important relationship we can everhave is with God, incarnate in Jesus andencountered in everyone we meet, made in theimage of God.

We read in the first book of Chronicles that allthings come from God; that includes all of 2020so don't be too keen to dismiss it. i urge youtherefore to spend some time reflecting on thelessons God has given us, and pray for the yearahead.

Best wishes and blessings to you all for 2021.

Zoom Christmas CoffeeMorning and Raffle

What a fun morning we all had on Saturday12th December; spirits were high and everyonewas determined to enjoy the virtual fellowship, atthe same time as raising much needed funds forthe parish. We had a Christmas Quiz, aGeneration Game (more about that later), a cakesale, an auction and lots of laughter. Christmashats and jumpers were in evidence as peoplechatted. Fr. Graham was a genial Master ofCeremonies, ably assisted by Vicky. Let me tell you about the Generation Game

from a participant’s perspective; following aphone call and the delivery of a surprise packageby Fr. Graham the night before, the four of usknew nothing about what we were going to bedoing during the game, except having a lot offun. So, at the appointed time all was revealed:

David, Bob, Beryl and myself were told weneeded icing sugar, a knife and a board forworking on. And then it was time to open themystery package which contained a block offondant icing, a ball of marzipan, a few cocktailsticks and some tiny beads. The demonstrationrevealed that we had to make an angel in 3minutes; if we had been given 3 hours I mighthave made a better job of my very squat winglessangel. The judges cast their votes and Bob Gilsonwas a worthy winner. At the time of writing this fun morning has

raised just over a £1000.Huge thanks to Fr. Graham, Mary Moss and

her helpers – Mary Sapsford, Julie Grymel, SueHatton and Bob Moore who delivered all thecakes and goods bought at auction. MJ

begin. With headphones in place, we heard Fr.Graham encourage us and hopefully try to relaxus with a Christmas cracker joke. Then followed4 beats; we listened to the first two and clappedto the next two, waited for the introduction andfinally started to sing. Having never recorded myvoice before it was terrifying to feel so exposed, every note painfully strained, breathing difficultbecause the recorder picked up every breath inthe wrong place, rustling of paper andoccasionally the telephone. Frustration sets inwhen having reached the final verse, a wrong lineor dodgy note is sung, and you know you have tostart all over again. The recording of all the carols was done over

three weeks and at our last choir practice weheard the results of our efforts. A huge thank youto Fr. Graham, Euan and Chris Bowen who havethe technical expertise to stitch all our individualrecordings together to form a choir. Challenging and rewarding and definitely

worth the time and effort involved. TheBerkswich Parish Choir hope you enjoyed it andwe can’t wait to get back together again to leadour worship and hopefully celebrate Easter withsome glorious music.

MJ

The Parish Choir goes VirtualWhen Fr. Graham said that he would like to

have an online ‘Nine Lessons and Carols’ servicemost of our choir members wondered how thiswas going to happen. We were soon to find out…Our final choir practice before lockdown had

been to rehearse the anthems and music for HolyWeek and Easter; and then on the 23rd March, churches were closed, so sadly we were unable tosing the wonderful music for this most importantChristian Festival. The next time we met as a choir was on a Zoom

meeting early in November, 8 months later. Ourchoirmaster and organist, Roy, told us what choircarols we would be singing and on his keyboardtook us through our parts; we sang along with ourmicrophones muted. This has continued until wewere ready to start recording our own voices. This where the terror and the fun begins! We

needed equipment – headphones and a specialrecording app had to be downloaded onto ouripads or iphones. Kerry Milan had kindlyrecorded a backing track for each of the parts sothat we could practise, but when we recorded wehad to sing to Roy’s organ accompaniment whichwas more difficult. After much practice singing to Kerry’s tracks

and a great deal of prevarication it was time to

The Joy of the Lone Chorister!A task was set. Music to make for the carols and lessons we love. With music sheets. TV turned off, the room as quiet as could be. All ready just for me!headphones on. Devices ready i listen to Graham's pep talk!instructions said off i go to record my waveringvoice. No, no!!Doorbell chimes... The dog doth barkMy peace is truly shattered, my recording now isbattered.Deep, deep breath, recover the calm. i put my head phones on. Fingers crossed that when i clap no one knocksthe door again. My devices ping, then a fly buzzes by, rightbeside my ear. What else can go wrong i ask myself? oh no! iforgot to press record i need to sing again!Where has time gone?it's dark outside... hours, listening to my ownvoice. oh, never mind this version will do. i have sungit a hundred times!! No one will hear the odd duff note or when i sangthe odd wrong word.Recording done. Now all i need to do is send the precious thingon!!

The Parish Choir goes Virtualin the first lockdown a few of the choir joined

Gareth Malone in his daily online singingpractice for the Great British home Chorus. itwas very reassuring as he, like me, had no realknowledge of technology, he had to keep uppinghis game buying new microphones, earphonesand so it continued. Then came the recordingfinding out how to record on our own, upload andsend as a video to him, initially in a rudimentaryway then Decca Records got involved and a moreprofessional way was found. The CD produced isamazing thinking that there a thousands ofremote voices pinned together.

This inspired me to research the possibility ofperhaps our choir being able to record the hymnsfor our morning Eucharists. i asked Fr Graham ifhe thought it may be possible, he didn’t say nobut didn’t say yes either. i knew LichfieldCathedral were recording their choir membersremotely and broadcasting at their sundayservices. i contacted Cathy Lamb, the wife of thechoir’s Musical Director Ben, as she leads someof the Diocese’s RsCM courses. she informedme that Ben was fortunate and had all thenecessary technology already for when theyproduce their CDs. Also, that it takes him hoursto put it all together but to get in touch with himdirectly. i did, and he was very helpful and sentme what he uses, of course i could not understandthe full details of the technology so passed it ontoFr Graham. he didn’t think we could do itimmediately but perhaps at Christmas. so, theball was now rolling and i am amazed how heworked on producing such a professional NineCarols and Lessons, a pleasure to watch andlisten to.

on the recording side, i can now fullyunderstand how important it is for choir membersto listen to each other when singing so that it allflows together. When practising, whilst walkingthe dog, everything seemed relaxed and clear butonce recording a croak would occur in the finalverse, so back to the start. The parts in my voicerange were much easier to record than when i hadto hit a high note without other voices to boostme. i had a few takes i must say, if it wasn’t thetelephone it was the doorbell or me just messingup.

Now we have regular virtual choir practices itshould become easier. Very grateful to all whomade it happen, so important to have music andpraise in our worship, it lifts the spirit.

NEW EVERY MORNINGEvery day is a fresh beginning,Listen my soul to the glad refrain. And, spite of old sorrowsAnd older sinning,Troubles forecastedAnd possible pain,Take heart with the day and begin again.

Susan Coolidge ( 1835 -1905)

THE FOURTH GIFTThe fourth gift they had wasWisdom,The one they needed for themselvesAnd the world.

WisdomTo leave the familiarin search of a new securityMore precious than the gifts they gave.

WisdomTo discover, in the starlit child,A significance aboveGold, frankincense and myrrh.

WisdomAnd the eyes of faithTo receive God’s showingof his son.

The gifts we read aboutWere three,But the fourth gift they had wasWisdom.

Creator God,by whose spirit we existso that we might bear fruit for you,may we measure our lives this year not by what we achieve or possess, but by how much we give, how many we loveand how often we hearyour ‘well done, good and faithful servant’.Amen

Keeper of our steps,Keeper of our senses,Keeper of our souls,Keep us as the apple of your eye;Keep us in your perfect peace;Keep us in our going out and our coming in;For you are the strong keepWithin the walls of our life.Amen

Open our eyes, gracious Lord, to see the infinitevalue of every soul,The supreme importance of every human lifeAnd the unique beauty of every individual,so that, without distraction or agenda, we mightcatch a glimpseof your likeness mirrored and your love at workin each person with whom we spend time thisday. AmenLord of all life and love,Walk with us throughout our pilgrimage on earth,Teaching us dailyhow to bless others through service, how to find strength in weaknessAnd how to experience growth by letting go,For your name’s sake. Amen Prayer Diary

If there is one thing that last year showed us, it was that life isunpredictable. Let us therefore anchor our lives this year in our God,who not only makes all things new, but who in Christ is the sameyesterday, today and forever.

AS A NEW YEAR BEGINSA prayer by Karl Barth (1886 – 1968). This mostprominent Protestant theologian of his time spentmuch of his life resisting the Nazi movement, andso knew a thing or two about entering a New Yearundaunted by troubles all around him. o Lord, our Father! At the turn of the year… ourhearts are filled with sombre thoughts… ourears are deafened by the voices of the radio andthe newspapers, with their numerous predictionsfor the coming year. instead we want to hear Yourword, Your voice, Your assurance, Yourguidance. We know that You are in our midst, and are eager to give us all that we need, whetherwe ask or not.…We ask for one thing only: that you collect ourscattered thoughts, getting rid of the confusedand defiant thoughts that may distract us, andthus enable us to concentrate on your limitlessgenerosity to us. You were abundantly generousto us last year, and will be no less generous to usnext year, and in every year to come. Fill us withgratitude to you.

A New Year’s resolution-prayerFollowing in His footsteps

Almighty eternal, just and merciful God, grant usthe desire to do only what pleases you, and thestrength to do only what you command. Cleanseour souls, enlighten our minds, and inflame ourhearts with your holy spirit, that we may followin the footsteps of your beloved son, JesusChrist.

St Francis of Assisi (1182 – 1226)

A Sermon preached by Rev’d Joy Bishop on the third Sunday of Advent

There is something mysterious about Adventthat sometimes feels a little unsettling. From ourreadings we have arrows pointing in alldirections almost like a firework display. Wehave isaiah pointing to the future and a long-awaited promised Messiah, our calendars arepointing us to the approaching celebrations of thebirth of this Messiah more than 2000 years ago.John points away from himself to Jesus at thebeginning of his ministry and the New Testamentreading features st. paul pointing forward toJesus’ return. As we get closer and closer toChristmas, joy begins to surround us. it’s there inour Christmas carols, and on our cards anddecorations. Joy was there for John pointing tothe coming ministry of Christ; it should be therefor us looking to the second coming; just as it’sthere as we celebrate the gift of the infant Jesusso long ago.

You may notice that today’s candle on theAdvent wreath isn’t purple like the other three.it’s pink. The traditional colour for Advent is

purple, which is meant to represent what is royal, like the coming prince of peace, but also to showrepentance, and the turning away from what isand towards something better.

This sunday is called “Gaudete sunday” whichmeans “rejoice.” And so, we light the pink candlebecause just as the white mixes with the purpleand transforms it, we are waiting for Christ’slight to break into our world and bring the joythat feels so elusive. We stand here, and we lookfor something better. We long for joy. And wesay, “o Come, o Come, Emmanuel”.

What i noticed most reading the messages fromisaiah and from paul to the Thessalonians andalso from John the Baptist was their passion, theircertainty about the messages they were bringing.i wish we could all operate with that kind ofcertainty and passion; how many more peoplewould come to hear and believe?

Today from isaiah.” The spirit of the Lord Godis upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; hehas sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,

15

to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim libertyto the captives, and release to the prisoners; toproclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” We agreebut do we feel passionately about it?

Who doesn’t like to hear about joy this time ofyear? Christmas is almost here, and we arejoyful.

But, what about those times when joy seemshard to find? What do we say then to the brokenhearted?

Never more relevant than this year with thesuffering of so many because of Covid. The ill,the separated families, the terribly lonely, thebereaved, the fearful, the ones who have lost theirjobs the ones who don’t know how to get enoughfood all across this world

All week i have been facing a blank computerscreen because i knew i was supposed to preachabout looking forward joyfully, but how do youtalk about joy in the face of something soterrible?

i think that in the church we sometimesstruggle to acknowledge the realities of theworld. We do try hard to recognise the difficultiesaround us but we would rather be joyful. howcan people come and talk about their pain andgrief? how can they talk about being depressed?how can they talk about losing their job andstruggling to make ends meet if we are solelydetermined to be joyful?

Jesus told us to bind up the broken hearted, andstay near those who suffer. hard things happenall the time, and sometimes it might feel likethere is no room for that in the Christmas season.Because some years the holidays for all of us aredifficult let’s make sure we can bring thosedifficulties into our worship.

The church has an obligation not just toacknowledge the brokenness of the world, but toalso go one step forward and proclaim hope. inAdvent we point to that fact, and we point with

hope to the future, and to the way Christ cameinto this world and will return.

scripture doesn’t promise us easy lives, or liveswithout pain. But it does promise us that thosethings do not have the last word. We proclaim, just by being together, however sociallydistanced, what joy really means.

We testify that the joy that comes with Christ isthere in the best of times, but it’s even there whentimes are hard. You can be a joyful person andstill weep with those who weep.

Christ is the light of the world, and the worstthat the world can do is still not enough toextinguish that light. And if that light cannot beextinguished, then neither can that joy.

And so, here we are, on one of the shorter daysof the year. We are here because somewhereinside of us we believe that the light will alwaysovercome the darkness. our job as followers ofChrist is to spread that light, and spread that joy.God’s gift of joy is there for us all to claim, notjust in the good times, but even more so in thebad. Claim it passionately because then you willthen proclaim it passionately.

And so, and as we watch and wait this Advent,be witnesses to the light of Christ, and the joy itbrings. Live as the people who believe that thisjoy, and the child who brings it, can change theworld.

Remember, paul speaking to the Thessalonianswas speaking with the knowledge of Jesus’ deathand resurrection and all that he won for us. Thevictory won, the promise of eternal life, weshould repent and prepare for his coming againwith the same joy and passion we prepare tocelebrate his birth and find the joy in both.

if you can do that, you’re almost ready forChristmas. Amen.

tragically many had died that day. i was sittingand praying at one bedside, and hearing the voiceof a nurse speaking softly, sitting with anotherpatient nearby… “Don’t worry … you are safe…Keep drinking in the oxygen. Do not be afraid.”Then there was tragic loss of much-lovedcolleagues and friends among the staff. TheChapel become a haven for remembrance withcondolence books to write in, candles to light, little knitted mementoes, and other tokens toplace on the altar or to take away. it became aspace to seek peace, and a safe place for tears tobe shed.

Yet, amid all this, there were also moments ofgrace…where the chaplaincy team sensed theever-present movement of the spirit across thehospital. Receiving requests for prayer frommatrons and nurses at shift handovers, setting upa spirituality resource table where we found thatthe free bibles, Quran’s, rosaries, prayer cardsconstantly needed replenishing throughout theday. And there were moments of joy, givingthanks in prayer with one of our cleaners, for thebirth of a grandchild - remembering the gift oflife, in the midst of mortality.

CoViD-19 is such a cruel disease. it deprivesus of contact and touch with those we love, limiting how we say good-bye at funerals, leaving us standing in the loneliness of our loss.our team have been contacting families whoseloved one sadly died at the hospital fromcoronavirus and other illnesses to offer pastoralcare and support, inviting them, when we are ableto gather again, to a ‘Time to Rememberservice’. Their stories are often heart breaking.one bereaved husband, sitting in self isolation athome, grieving the loss of his beloved wife, fromwhom he had never been apart for 55 years, simply said “i just want someone to hold me.”

As i spoke with nursing staff it was evident thatthey were facing situations they had neverexperienced. Nursing teams drafted in fromdifferent areas of the hospital, found themselveslearning to adapt to the different needs andcircumstances in the face of this pandemic. Thededication of the medical staff continued to shinethrough despite this unpreceded situation. As achaplaincy team we do a lot of work in thebackground and are called not just to bealongside patients and families but also to carefor and support staff. Walking the wards in theevening, and called upon to be that listening ear,i heard the staff’s stories. some who havefamilies who are far away in other countries.some staff moved out of their family homes intohotels, so they could protect their families, patients. one paramedic recently confided to methat he had not been able to hold his children fortwo months. i saw staff anxious, oftenemotionally and physically exhausted, but stillresiliently continuing to put their own fears, concerns, and comfort to one side, to care forothers.

in fact, it was humbling to continually witnessthe tenderness and care that medical staff gave topatients. one of my most privileged momentswas at the height of the crisis, in a ward where

BROCTON W.I. 2020, what a strange year

this has been, hopefullynever to be repeated.

The ladies of BroctonW.i., did however manage

to keep in touch with one another, throughafternoon tea events, held in gardens, through thesummer months, always adhering to therestrictions of social distancing.

Communication has been maintainedthroughout, by our secretary, who has kept usinformed on all matters relating to the widerWomen’s institute. Friends have kept in touch, through phone calls and the internet.

As always, a poppy Wreath was placed at TheWar Memorial, Weeping Cross, on sunday 11thNovember; a token of our gratitude, to those wholaid down their lives for our freedom.

The Committee are unable to say when ourmeetings and activities will resume, but areconfident that they will.

in the meantime, a healthy, peaceful, Christmasand New Year, is wished to all our members, other Women’s institutes and the residents ofstafford. Anne MacLeod

25TH JANUARY - ST PAUL, THE FIRST CHRISTIAN

INTELLECTUALThis month, on 25th January, the Church

celebrates probably the most famous conversionof all. At least, what happened to a young mancalled saul on the road to Damascus has becomea byword for all instant conversions - what isknown as a ‘damascene’ moment. saul was adevout Jew, a pharisee, a student of Gamaliel anda fierce critic of the followers of Jesus, then avery new sect on the religious scene.

on his way to Damascus to start a purge ofChristians in that city, he was blinded by a brightlight and heard a voice saying, ‘saul, saul, whyare you persecuting me?’ he asked the identity ofthe voice, and was told: ‘Jesus, whom you arepersecuting’. stunned by the experience, hefollowed further instructions which led him to aChristian man in Damascus, who prayed withhim. As he did, saul’s sight was restored.

The experience convinced paul that Jesus -crucified in Jerusalem four or five years earlier -was in fact the Messiah and had risen from thedead. After a period of instruction, saul wasbaptised and took the name paul. At first, someChristians were wary about the reality of hisconversion, but over a period of time he wasaccepted and indeed eventually recognised as an’apostle’, a ‘special messenger’ of Jesus Christ.

his intellectual stature and leadership giftsquickly marked him out, and within a few yearshe became a leading figure in the emergingChristian Church, preaching and foundingchurches all over the Middle East, largely ofGentile converts. he was eventually martyred inRome, probably in 65AD.

paul was the first intellectual of the ChristianChurch, the man who was able to set the eventsof the life and teaching of Jesus, and especiallyhis death and resurrection, into a coherenttheology, with its roots very clearly in the Jewishfaith of his own upbringing.

Many people think of paul as a rather negative, narrow misogynist, but even a quick reading ofhis letters actually reveals a person of greatwarmth, who evoked enormous affection anddevotion from others. ‘You would have pluckedout your eyes and given them to me!’ he writes tothe Christians at Galatia. As for the charge thatpaul disliked women, even a quick read of hisletters will reveal how large a role women playedin his churches. in terms of the first century, stpaul was a dangerous liberal! so, all in all, theamazing paul of Tarsus deserves a bit ofcelebrating on 25th January

Five Ways to Welcome Wildlife

January is the time for newstarts so why not try to make your churchyardmore wildlife friendly in 2021? here are fivesimple things to try, start with one or two.1. Create a meadow - choose an area of grass infull sun, currently mown short. Leave it uncut forabout 14 weeks over the spring and summer. seehow many wildflowers come up naturally, youwill probably be surprised. scythe or strim thelong grass, rake it up and remove it to a compostheap or use it to make hay.2. help your veteran trees - churchyards arefantastic for veteran trees, particularly yews.Gently clear below veteran and ancient trees, removing young saplings, piles of grass cuttings, sheds, grave spoil, old bottles and anything elsethat is there! Always remove ivy from yew treesbut no need to do so from other trees unlessadvised to by an arboriculture expert.3. Give wildlife a home - great fun forcommunity events, how about making bird andbat boxes, bug hotels, deadwood piles andcompost bays. swift boxes can fit behind thechurch tower louvres. Try a range of differentsized bird boxes, including open fronted ones forspotted Flycatcher and Robin. place a deadwoodpile in a shady spot for frogs, newts, slow wormand hedgehogs to feast on the invertebrates there.4. Be a little untidy – leave an area of tussockygrassland or scrub, perhaps against a wall orround the back. Cut and clear this every two orthree years, doing a section each year. This willbe fantastic shelter and great for overwinteringinvertebrates as well as amphibians and reptiles.hedgehogs love places like this too. 5. plant for pollinators – fill your flowerbeds orplanters with species that are useful to insects.include native plants and grasses as well as earlyand late flowering plants. how about some herbswhich people can enjoy too? The wildflowerViper’s Bugloss is outstanding for pollinators andvery attractive too.

Enjoy watching the wildlife which will takeadvantage of these features and please tell uswhat you see.
