Treasures From Our Tradition “Ordinary” is not always a desirable adjective. Who would not be insulted to receive a thank-you note for your “ordinary birthday gift,” or “the ordinary hospitality at the dinner party”? No restaurant advertises its “ordinariness,” no car dealer seats a customer at the steering wheel and whispers, “Look how ordinary it is!” Yet here we are in “Ordinary Time.” The word carries a different meaning here: it does not mean these days are dull, boring, pedes-trian, uninteresting. It means “ordinal,” or “numbered” Sundays, a season of the year when we follow the story of Jesus’ life and ministry in an ordered way, with each Sun-day assigned an ordinal number. You can amaze your friends with this example of Catho-lic arithmetic: the “Ordinary Sundays” begin with the last Sunday of Christmas, the Baptism of the Lord, continue until the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, and resume after a cluster of feasts following Pentecost Sunday. The num-bers are calculated by counting backwards from the So-lemnity of Christ the King, the Thirty-fourth Sunday in Ordi-nary Time. Now you know there is nothing “ordinary” about “Ordinary Time!”

Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe La cruda realidad de nuestro continente es que América es tierra de mártires. Esta semana recordamos el martirio del indígena quechua Segundo Francisco Guamán de Ec-uador. Como la mayor parte de los indígenas americanos, los quechuas consideran la tierra como pertenencia de la comunidad humana. De ella come y vive todo ser viviente. Desde la llegada de los europeos la tierra americana ha sido explotada y con ella los indígenas también. El siglo pasado unos campesinos ecuatorianos dirigidos por Segundo Francisco comenzaron a reunirse con el Min-isterio de Agricultura y el Instituto Ecuatoriano de Reforma Agraria y Colonización. Que agencias civiles tomen interés por los derechos del indígena es siempre “buena nueva”. Lamentablemente lo que es “buena nueva” para la muchedumbre pobre es “mala noticia” para los po-derosos. Uno de éstos decidió vengarse en contra de los campesinos. En su rabia, asesinó al joven Segundo Fran-cisco de sólo 25 años de edad. Pero su muerte, como la de todo mártir, no fue en vano. Su sangre derramada so-bre la madre tierra ha ido sembrando más movimientos por los derechos de los indígenas.

Prayer Service for our Confirmation Students’ on Retreat Join us Fri., Jan. 31 at St. Madeleine Catholic Church at 7PM for an Adora-tion Prayer Service led by Deacon John Tullius that will be lifted up to Our Lord Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for all of our holy intentions, especially for our Confirmation Students, the Staff, and for our Priests Fr. Bravo, Fr. Aytona, and Fr. Pineda. This prayer service will be followed by recitation of the holy Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed all night in silent prayer after this until 3AM Saturday, at which time we pray the Divine Mercy Rosary followed by the 2000 Hail Marys devo-tions. All are welcome.

Saint Angela Merici (c. 1474-1540) January 27

Born in Northern Italy, orphaned in child-hood, Angela Merici faced a society in which education was largely the privilege of wealthy young men and based primarily in monastic schools. This reality shaped Angela’s insight-ful conviction that society’s disorder was caused by disorder in the home, and a lack of model Christian mothers the result of neglect-ing the education of young women. Transform the Christian family by placing an educated wife and mother at its heart, Angela believed, and the whole world would be renewed in Christ! So she gathered a small group of un-married women, many of them Franciscan Tertiaries (lay affiliates) like herself, and set out to educate poor girls, free of charge, in their homes. She and her band of teachers called themselves companions, pioneering a new form of non-cloistered religious life for women, bearing witness to evangelical sim-plicity in the midst of the world, not as a for-mal “order” but as the Company (compagnia) of Saint Ursula. Known today as the Ursulines, Angela Merici’s spiritual daughters continue serving the Church and society in a rich diver-sity of ministries.

Santos Timoteo y Tito (Siglo I) 26 de enero

Timoteo y Tito fueron colaboradores cerca-nos del apóstol Pablo. Timoteo es descrito por Pablo como un “hombre de Dios” a quien le pide que no se abochorne de ser joven y que no permita que alguien lo desprecie por ser un líder joven. Asimismo, fue su compañero apostólico en la evangelización de Tesalónica, Corinto y Éfeso. De esta última comunidad fue su obispo y ahí tuvo como encargo organi-zar la comunidad y sus ministerios. Fue testi-go del martirio de Pablo y, posteriormente, él mismo sufrió el martirio. Tito fue convertido al cristianismo por el mismo Pablo. Es Pablo quien destaca en Tito las cualidades de ar-tífice de la paz, administrador, mediador en los conflictos y de gran capacidad para organ-izar las comunidades nacientes que enfrenta-ban el acecho de la falsa doctrina. Tito murió, según las fuentes a los 93 años. Pablo escribe a ambos, en sus cartas pastorales, respecto a las cualidades que ellos, como obispos, deben tener. Asimismo, recorre uno a uno los ministerios de la Iglesia y los com-portamientos que deben ser observados por los miembros de la comunidad.

“Desiring Heaven: The Crown and the Cross”

A powerful new Parish Mission presentation

January 27-30, 2020 St. Madeleine Catholic Church will be presenting a parish mission entitled

“To Serve is to Reign.” The mission will be presented over four consecutive days from January 27-30, 7PM at St. Madeleine Catholic Church. The presentation will last for approximately 45 minutes and be followed by a 15-minute Benediction prayer service. A “parish mission” is a special event for Catholics in which EVERYONE is invited to take part in several days of activity and prayer, all focusing on faith enrichment. A mission is conducted by guest speakers who provide dynamic presentations directed toward key aspects of faith applied to life issues. Those who attend a parish mission often experience a spiritual renewal, bringing about a deeper love for God, and a revitalization of their personal relationships. For our parish mission, St. Madeleine has invited a representative from an order of priests called the Fa-thers of Mercy. For over 200 years this congregation of priests has evangelized and strengthened the faith of parish communities through their exciting form of preaching, that is both powerful and thought-provoking. They will be conducting the five evening presentations, as well as briefly visiting with the school children and faculty. The Fathers of Mercy are trying to make it so convenient for us all that we hope EVERYONE will be sure to attend one of their presentations each day! The Fathers of Mercy hope to enrich the faith-life of all who attend, including those who believe that they are already very devout, as well as those who may just be very doubtful. For people who are not Catholic, or who are just unclear about what it is that Catholics today really believe, the parish mission is an excit-ing way for them to hear a clear presentation of the Catholic faith and get real answers to their questions. Parents, please encourage your teens on the importance of attending this parish mission, even as you set an example for them by your own attendance. Additionally, it is hoped that everyone will be sure to bring along a friend or relative who might not otherwise intend to go alone. The priest conducting this mission will be Fr. Joseph Aytona, CPM. In order to help you grow in holiness these priests desire you to come to meet Christ, not only in your neighbor but in His Sacraments. To help in fulfilling your desire for more intimacy with God, as well as to provide an opportunity for reconciliation, priests will be available for confessions each night of the parish mission. The Fathers of Mercy associate their work at parish missions with a scripture passage taken from the Gospel of St. John, in which Jesus spoke to those who desired to be his followers. Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, ‘What do you seek?’ And they said to Him, ‘Rabbi’ (Which means “teacher”), ‘where are You staying?’ He said to them, “Come and see” (John 1:38-39). He said to them, ‘Come and see’” (John 1:38-39) St. Madeleine Parish and the Fathers of Mercy welcome all to attend this dynamic parish mission. Seeking the Light In today’s readings we find our-selves being drawn more deeply into relationship with Jesus. We are getting to know more about him as we see how he struggles with the news of his cousin John’s arrest. His first response is to withdraw, to leave Nazareth and go to Capernaum. There he is perhaps both consoled and challenged by the words of Isaiah that Matthew quotes: “the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, / on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death / light has arisen” (Matthew 4:16). Jesus contemplates his cousin’s death, per-haps his own death, and he seeks the light. Maybe it is these words of Isaiah that move Jesus out of his withdrawal and into action. He begins to preach, teach, cure disease and illness, and proclaim the gospel of the kingdom.

Buscamos La Luz En las lecturas de hoy nos encontra-mos deseando una relación más pro-funda con Jesús. Lo vamos conociendo un poco más al ver cómo le afecta la noticia del arresto de su primo Juan. Su primera reacción es retirarse, dejar Nazaret e irse a Cafarnaúm. Es allí donde quizás encuentra tanto consue-lo como reto en las palabras de Isaías que Mateo cita: “El pueblo que caminaba en tinieblas vio una gran luz. Sobre los que vivían en tierra de som-bras una luz resplandeció” (Mateo 4:16). Jesús contempla la muerte de su primo, y quizás su propia muerte, y busca la luz. Tal vez son estas palabras de Isaías las que sacan a Jesús de su retiro y lo lanzan a la ac-ción, pues él comienza a predicar, enseñar, curar enfermedades y a proclamar el Evangelio del Reino.
