Wilson’s Fourteen Points

• President Wilson outlined a set of ideas to make for a more just world after the war.– 6 points contained plans of a general nature.

• 1) no secret treaties (2) freedom of the seas for all (3) removal of all economic barriers (4) reduction of national armaments (5) adjustment of colonial claim (6) establishment of a League of Nations.

– 8 remaining points dealt with specific counties and regions.

– Everyone seemed to like Wilson’s proposal.• Even the Germans.

Defeat of the Central Powers

• With Russia signing a treaty with Germany– Ger. Was able to put all troops to western

front.• Gained the advantage and push to within 37 miles

of Paris.– The American Doughboys were landing at about this

time.– Allies started to counter-attack and pushed the Germans

almost back to their own border.» Things got worse--- Bulgaria surrendered, Turks

wanted peace. Austria-Hungary split in two.» Germany was alone.

End of the War to End All Wars

• The German Kaiser soon gave up his throne.– Germany became a Republic.

• In November 1918 Germany signed an Armistice to stop the fighting.– At 11:00AM on November 11th all firing would cease.– The treaty with Russia was canceled, Germany has

give up much of its fleet, release POW’s and give up territory west of the Rhine River.

Cost of the War

• 8.5 million soldiers were dead.– German lost 1.8

million. Russia almost 1.8 million, France 1.4 million, Aus/Hun and England 1 million, USA 110,000

• There was an economic loss of 300 billion dollars.
