St. Francis Church wants to encourage families to worship together. In order to bea community where all ages feel welcome, we provide coloring materials for children touse during worship and seek to be a community that understands the specic gifts andchallenges that children bring. We encourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so,

to sit toward the front with your children, as little-ones are often more attentive if theycan see what is happening.

That being said, we understand that there may be times when it is best to takeadvantage of child care, which we have available in the room immediately through theKitchen off of the entryway.

In Preparation for worship: We invite you to take a few moments before the servicebegins to be still, and rest from the business of your lives. Take time to breathe deeply,

and reect upon the past week. When youre ready, you might say the following prayeror one like it in preparation for worship.

    First Reading: Zechariah 9:9-12All sit.

Hundreds of years before Jesus birth, the prophet Zechariah looked forward in hope tothe triumphant coming of a humble king, a messiah who will bring peace to the ends ofthe earth.

A Reading from the book of the prophet Zechariah.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, yourking is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on adonkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the warhorse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to thenations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners freefrom the waterless pit. Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declarethat I will restore to you double.

The Psalm of the day:Remain seated

    Psalm 145:8-15

8 The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, *slow to anger and of great kindness.

9 The Lord is loving to everyone *and his compassion is over all his works.

10 All your works praise you, O Lord, *and your faithful servants bless you.

    11 They make known the glory of your kingdom *and speak of your power;

12 That the peoples may know of your power *and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.

13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom; *your dominion endures throughout all ages.

15 The Lord upholds all those who fall; *he lifts up those who are bowed down.

    Second Reading: Romans 7:15-25a

Paul is critical of our condition as sinners. We fall short on our own and can onlyaccomplish the good that we intend with Gods help.

A Reading from Pauls letter to the Church in Rome.

For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the verything I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So nowit is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good

dwells in me, that is, in my esh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not theability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is whatI keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin thatdwells within me.

So I nd it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delightin the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging waragainst the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in mymembers. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

We played the ute for you, and you did not dance;we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon. The Son ofMan came eating and drinking, and they say, Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, afriend of tax collectors and sinners! Yet wisdom is justied by her deeds.

At that time Jesus declared, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have

hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children;yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by myFather, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father exceptthe Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all who laborand are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me,for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will nd rest for your souls. For my yoke iseasy, and my burden is light..

    TheNiceNe creed

Webelieve in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

    he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirithe became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucied under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and gloried. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

The Sanctus: S-130Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel or stand at this time, as best helps you to pray.

Holy and gracious Father: In your innite love you made us for yourself; and, when wehad fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent JesusChrist, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one ofus, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, aperfect sacrice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ tookbread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, andsaid, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance ofme. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shedfor you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for theremembrance of me.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrice of praise andthanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son,

the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we mayfaithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; andat the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in theunity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

    AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

    A Note on Todays Readings

Proper 9: Sunday closest to July 6Year A

Welcome to St. Francis Church. Todays reading from Matthew is when Jesus learns of themurder of John the Baptist. He mourns that people rejected him and John: John, for hissevere message of judgment and ascetic lifestyle, and Jesus for his message of Gods lovefor all people and his zest for living. Nevertheless, Gods blessing is available for all who

accept Jesus call and for all those who minister Gods love to other people.

The rst reading from Zechariah describes God coming to the people with joy andrejoicing. The prophet envisions the time when Gods visitation will bring peace and hopeto all people.

    15/1615

We continue in the second lesson to read from Pauls letter to the Romans. Although, aswe heard last week, we have died and been raised in baptism, we still nd that sin is alivein us. Paul struggles here with the notion that we are dead to sin and yet sin is still activein our lives. He comes to no easy answer but instead rejoices in God through Jesus who isthe only solution to this quandary.

In the liturgy, we are reconstituted as resurrection people. We nd the principles of livingin the world to be those of Gods Kingdom rather than those of the world. In worship and

in our ministry to the helpless we become signs of contradiction to the worlds standards.
