We are excited to be able to work with a lot of familiar faces and some new ones for another great school year. We would like to thank everyone that is involved with the Tech Prep program! It is because of your hard work, dedication and support that so many students are able to earn free college credit through CSN’s Tech Prep Program. WHAT’S HAPPENING

September 2013

Tech Prep Application Process In the 2012-2013 school year Tech Prep launched the online application process. While there were a few hiccups along the way overall the process was a great success and we will be continuing with the online application process for the 2013-2014 school year. To be eligible to apply for Tech Prep credit students must be a high school junior or senior and earn at least a “B” in both semesters of the approved high school CTE class(es) that they are applying for. Along with that students must complete the 3 steps of the application process by the application deadline of March 12, 2013.

1.) Students will need to complete the CSN Admissions Application online. It is highly recommended that students provide their social security number on this college application to prevent any future issues. Once the student completes this application they will be emailed their NSHE ID and can move on to the next step

2.) Once they have their NSHE ID they will go to the Tech Prep website and fill out the application for Tech Prep credit by the application deadline of March 12, 2014. This application will go live on November 1, 2013.

3.) Students will need to complete and sign along

with a parent or guardian if they are under 18 years old a Consent to Release High School Records Form. This will be provided to students and can also be found on our website.

If any of the above steps are not completed by the application deadline students will not be eligible for Tech Prep credit. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Tech Prep Department at 651.4820.

TECH PREP PRESENTATIONS AND APPLICATION DAYS

Each year the Tech Prep Department sends a survey to students that earned free college credit through the Tech Prep Program. The biggest response that we get from these surveys is students wish they had known about the program earlier. We would like to get this message out to as many students as possible by attending your high school college and career fairs and peaking to students in the classrooms. If you would like for us to come to your school for a classroom presentation or to participate in a college/career fair at your school please contact Somer Rodgers at 702.651.4838 or [email protected] so that we can arrange for someone from Tech Prep to be there. Last year the Tech Prep Program implemented “Tech Prep Application Days”, where a representative from Tech Prep went to the high school and completed the application process with students. We had several schools participate in “Tech Prep Application Days” last school year; they were all a great success. I encourage all schools to take advantage of “Tech Prep Application Days” For scheduling please contact Somer Rodgers 702.651.4838 or [email protected]

.Joint Technical Skills Committees

Ongoing relationships among education, business and industry, and other community stakeholders are central to Program of Study design, implementation, and maintenance. CCSD and CSN have established Joint Technical Skills Committees (JTSC) for Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs offered by both educational institutions which are overseen by the Tech Prep and CCSD CTE Departments. Joint Technical Skills Committees serve several purposes. They provide the public with an added assurance that community interests in education are being protected. These committees serve as an organized base for a three-way communication between the school districts, the college, and representatives from business and industry within the community. With the help of business and industry these committees are able to recommend program curricula, facility and equipment needs at each institution. JTSC committees also develop and review program articulation and collaborate with educational institutions to promote school-to-work transitions. We would like to recognize the 2011-2012 JTSC business and industry chairperson and CCSD/CSN coordinator for working together to create opportunities for students in Southern Nevada.
