HPC, innovation and the economy

“At a macroeconomic level, it has been shown that returns on

investment in HPC are extremely high and that the companies

and countries that invest the most in HPC lead in science and

economic success”

High-Performance Computing: Europe’s place in a Global Race, EC, 2012

“…the High Performance Computing (HPC) initiative focus on

maintaining America’s leadership in science and technology –

the heart of the nation’s unmatched ability to innovate.”

Council of Competitiveness, 2011, Annual Report: Making an Impact

“with the CM-5, we look

forward to being able to

solve many of the Grand

Challenge problems that

have been intractable until

now.” Andy White, Director ACL

Trends and disruptive technology

Industry

dominates!

HPC is a

parallel

Universe

Disruptive: accelerators & co-procs

Other significant trends:

• Data-driven computations

(“Big Data”)

• Green Computing

PRACE’s achievements in 3 years In 2013, PRACE is providing nearly 15 Pflop/s (Tier-0 competencies)

SuperMUC: IBM IDPX

at GCS partner LRZ,

>155 000 cores

FERMI: IBM BlueGene/Q

at CINECA, >163 000 cores

MareNostrum: IBM IDPX

at BSC, >48 000 cores

JUQUEEN: IBM BlueGene/Q

at GCS partner FZJ,

>456 000 cores

CURIE: Bull Bullx at

GENCI partner CEA

>90 000 cores.

HERMIT: Cray

at GCS partner HLRS, >113 000 cores

Open R&D model from Jan. 2012 Access to high-value services

Training and code enabling • Developing Open Source codes for industry

Information, Promotion and Networking • PRACE Industrial Seminars

Regular Calls open to industry twice a year • Access is free of charge, based on scientific excellence only,

but with commitment to publish results in publicly available media

Since 2012 a total 12 companies, mostly SMEs

Three new access models under discussion • Pre-Competitive R&D

• SHAPE : SMEs HPC Adoption Programme for Europe

• Participation on joint hardware and software prototypes

PRACE-3IP kick-off in Paris

EDF Energy (UK) RENAULT (France) 20.8 Mh on Hermit (HLRS, Germany)

6th PRACE call (March’13 - Mach’14)

Participants :

A. Revel (U.Manchester) J. Uribe (EDF R&D UK),

C. Moulinec (STFC), T. Craf)

B. Launder (U. Manchester)

Goal: LES simulations for

simulate flows inside a Magnus

rotor (turbosails) - Could complement Diesel engines

- Rotor completed by rotating cylinders

spinning thanks to lateral wind

- Evaluation of the gain in performance

Green potential use for

sea transport

Participants :

M. Pariente, Y. Tourbier

(Renault) A. Kamoulakos (ESI Group)

and Mines St Etienne

42Mh on CURIE (TGCC, France)

6th PRACE call (March’13 - Mach’14)

Goal : Improve car safety by performing

more acurate crash optimisation - Assess new large scale optimisation methods

(200 parameters, 20 M finite elements)

- First ever in the automotive market

- Impossible with internal Renault R&D HPC facilites

Anticipate new security rules (EuroNCAP6 in 2015)

Challenges ahead

• Learn to think parallel… (much) harder as NCPUs

• Main obstacle: limited scalability of software

–Scale to 10,000s+ (not just 100s)

• Large-scale software initiatives urgently required

• HPC as a methodology, not a platform

–Need to address the “human factor”

–Mobile devices, accelerated desktops

HPC for all!

• Disruptive technology

–Accelerators and co-processors

–HPC does not have to be expensive

–... but high-end skills still essential!

Up to 1000 speedup

‘Most Innovative Use Of HPC in

Financial Services’

• World-class award

• Actively promoted to Industry & Academia
