short of a year in KorengalValley in Afghanistan where42 American soldiers werekilled between 2001 and 2010.He was part of the forceinvolved in the withdrawalfrom the valley last spring. The remote base tucked
away among the hills alongthe Afghanistan and Pakistanborders could only be reachedby helicopter, which maderesupply difficult.Every Clermont soldier the
commissioners have recog-nized has spoken of the impor-tance of receiving mail andpackages from home, but thesupply problems also disrupt-ed mail service for his unit.“It was pretty important to
all of us. Getting somethingfrom home boosted our spir-its,” Mulvaney said. “We
would always share packageswith each other.”He said they went two
months without receiving any-thing. Not only did they nothave mail coming in, but theydid not have mail going out.The lack of letters also took itstoll on his parents, Carolynand William.
“He could usually call homeright before they went out (onpatrol) to let us know theywere OK,” Carolyn Mulvaneysaid. “As a parent I waited forthose phone calls or checkedon him on Facebook.”She emphasized the impor-
tance of supporting the sol-diers.
“I’d like to say thank you tothe families and communitythat supports the troops,”Carolyn Mulvaney said. “It isa blessing and they need allthe support.”In addition to foot patrols,
Mulvaney said he frequentlymet with the elders of the localtribe. Part of his role in the

Duke Energy awarded20 percent tax reduction
BY BRETT ROLLERSun staff
News for the NewRichmond Exempted VillageSchool District is better thanexpected, but the district willlose $334,000 annually fol-lowing an announcementfrom Ohio Tax CommissionerRichard Levin. The Ohio Tax Commission
has granted a 20 percentreduction in tax valuation ofDuke Energy’s generatingplant equipment. Duke origi-nally applied for a 40 percentreduction of the valuation ofits generating equipment andits transmission and distribu-tion equipment. A reductionon transmission and distribu-tion equipment was denied. The reduction means the
school district will lose taxrevenue from Duke’s
Beckjord plant.“Although the decision
could have resulted in a $1.4million loss to the NewRichmond Exempted VillageSchool District, we will lose$334,432 annually,” NewRichmond’s Chief FinancialOfficer Teresa Napier said in apress release. “Our districtsuffered the largest loss in theState of Ohio.”Duke has 60 days to appeal
the ruling and according to thepress release they havealready re-filed a petition ofreassessment of their trans-mission and distributionequipment. Clermont CountyAuditor Linda Fraley has theoption to file an appeal onbehalf of the county. The denial of the reduction
on transmission and distribu-tion equipment prevented acounty wide loss of about
$5.87 million annually inproperty taxes. The devaluation is retroac-
tive to 2009 taxes. Duke orig-inally filed their petition inDec. 2009. They paid the fullvalue of their first payment inFebruary 2010 then withheld20 percent of the taxes due inthe second half of the year.Napier said the district
setup an escrow account with$734,000 at the end of the dis-trict’s fiscal year on June 30,2010 to prepare for a potentialrefund. She said the approvalof only a portion of Duke’srequest meant the district willnot likely need to refund anytaxes.“We’re just waiting for the
end of the 60 day window (forDuke to file an appeal) beforewe release the escrow,”Napier said. “We try to oper-ate here as conservative aspossible.”The loss of revenue from

Unless you keep track ofobscure holidays, you may notbe aware that Jan. 29 isNational Puzzle Day. Andwhile this day may not drawmuch attention, it does recog-nize the enjoyment that mil-lions of people get from doingpuzzles. Of course, you’ll findpuzzles in all aspects of yourlife. Consider, for example, the type of retirement lifestyleyou’ve envisioned: travel, vol-unteering, pursuing hobbies orperhaps even opening yourown business. To make thispicture come to life, you needto put the financial “pieces”together: And one way to helpaccomplish this is to consoli-date your various retirementaccounts — such as your IRA,401(k) and other employer-sponsored retirement plans —with one financial servicesprovider. When you consolidate these
types of accounts, you cangain a number of key benefits, including these:• Potential reduction of fees
and paperwork — By workingwith just one provider, youmay be able to save on thefees and paperwork requiredto maintain your account. • Easier management of
distributions — Most retire-ment plans, including a401(k), 457(b), 403(b) and tra-ditional IRA, require you tostart taking minimum distribu-tions once you turn 70?.(These distributions are notrequired for Roth IRAs.)While it may not be difficultto determine a single distribu-tion, it can be cumbersomeand confusing to calculatemultiple distributions frommultiple providers. Having allyour required minimum distri-butions (RMDs) coming froma single provider can greatlystreamline the process.• Easier calculation of taxes
— Most types of retirementaccounts are tax-deferred —but on those accounts, taxeswill be due on your with-drawals. By consolidatingyour accounts, your distribu-tions will be easier to track, asmentioned above, which maymake it easier for you to cal-culate the taxes due. • Unified investment strate-
gy — If you place all yourfinancial assets with onefinancial services provider, you’ll find it much easier tofollow a single, unified invest-ment strategy. A qualifiedfinancial advisor can help youallocate your investment dol-lars in a way that’s appropriatefor your retirement goals, risktolerance and time horizon. After you’ve identified
what assets you have, andwhere they’re located, seek toconsolidate them with a finan-cial services provider. Try tofind one that offers face-to-face service and regularreviews of your situation. As you can see, by consoli-
dating your various invest-ment accounts, you can helpsolve the “puzzle” of creatingthe retirement you seek. Sowhen the time comes, startputting all the pieces together.

Ohio High SchoolAthletic Assocation
Explains Importance ofHigh School Sports
The following was pub-lished in a recent issue ofthe OHSAA (Ohio HighSchool AthleticAssociation) Magazine.
“The Interscholastic ath-letics programs are inher-ently educational. Theyprovide valuable lessonsfor practical situations -teamwork, sportsmanship, citizenship, winning andlosing, and hard work.
“Through participation, students learn self-disci-pline, personal sacrificeand leadership, build self-confidence, learn torespect others, developstrategic thinking, anddevelop skills to handlecompetitive situations. These are the qualities thepublic expects in studentsso that they becomeresponsible adults andproductive citizens.
“There is nothing wrongwith striving to be the best.Interscholastic athleticprograms must strive todevelop all the kids whowant to participate to betheir best - their best asindividuals, as students,as teammates, as mem-bers of the community, -not just their best as ath-letes.
“In interscholastic athlet-ics, we win if we developwinners. However, we loseif all we care about is win-ning.”
Ohio High SchoolAthletic AssociationNames the Five W’s ofInterscholastic Athletics
The following was pub-lished in an issue of theOHSAA (Ohio High SchoolAthletic Association)Magazine.
“Who? We’re education-al athletics, not big-timepromoters.
“What? We’re thebuilders of tomorrow’scommunity leaders, notfarm clubs for college andprofessional teams.
“When? We’re an after-school activity, not a year-round endeavor. Theseare programs that allowkids to be kids.
“Where? Our gamesshould be played locally. There’s plenty of healthycompetition where kidscan learn and growthrough athletics in mostof our backyards. We don’tneed national schedules toaccomplish our purposes.
“Why? Because it’s theonly right way to do it.Schools offer these pro-grams because theyenhance the educationalexperience of the youngpeople who participate.”
Ohio High SchoolAthletic AssociationMission Statement
