“Elijah prayed for death, saying: This is enough, O Lord. Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers. He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree, but then an angel touched him and ordered him to

get up and eat…for the angel of the Lord came back a second time, touched him and ordered ‘Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you.’ He got up, ate and drank…he walked forty days and nights to the mountain of God, Horeb.” We return to Capernaum and find Jesus telling us ‘I AM the bread of life.’ It is in the Eucharist we find Jesus present to accompany us on our journey. Elijah was awakened twice and was ordered to brace himself for the journey. Jesus is the bread of life for us. We often overlook how great, how important, how necessary is this gift for our spiritual survival. How many people in the world die each day of starvation? Too many, and we are called to assist them. How many people in the church take the gift of the Eucharist for granted? We speak of a priest shortage, while we should focus on the lack of appreciation for the gift of the Eucharist. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP SESSIONS “Sharing the Journey”

“Those whom we Love and Lose are no longer where they were before. They are now where we are.”

“Grief shared is grief diminished.” The Bereavement Ministry of St. John Bosco Church will provide the bereavement support group sessions for those who have lost a loved one recently or are having difficulty in their grief. These sessions will provide insight into their grief following a death. We will be reflecting on: Understanding common grief reactions; Coping strategies; Self-care throughout the grief process and beyond; and the Uniqueness of your grief experience. Attending these grieving overview sessions is gently encouraged for they not only give you some guidance now but also lay a foundation for future “optional” once-a-month ongoing Resilient Heart sessions. These sessions will be offered weekly for seven weeks on Monday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 PM in the Multi-Purpose Room, beginning Monday, September 10, 2018. Registration is required to assure seating and materials. If you are interested, please call Marie Guza, (570) 455-3874, to register.

HAND BELL CHOIR The St. John Bosco Hand Bell Choir will participate in the 11 AM Mass on Sunday, August 19.

INTERESTED IN JOINING THE CATHOLIC CHURCH?

AN INVITATION: Interested in being a Catholic or at least talking about it? Been coming to Mass for years with your family but never joined the Catho-

lic Church? Were you baptized Catholic but never received First Holy Commun-ion or Confirmation? Or have you simply been away from the Church for a while – years, even? If you or anyone you know answers “yes” to these questions, I would be happy to have a conversation about exploring a closer relationship with Jesus and His Church. Simply call the Parish Office at (570) 788-1997, etc., to set up an appointment.

CHOIR NEWS The Adult Choir will sing their first Mass of the new season on Sunday, September 2, at 11 AM (Labor Day Weekend). Rehearsals will be Mondays, August 20 and 27, from 7-8:30 PM in the Parish Music Room. New members welcome.

SAINT JOHN BOSCO, OUR PARISH PATRON WAS AN ITALIAN PRIEST WHO WAS BORN ON AUGUST 16, 1815. THIS WEEK WE MARK HIS 203RD BIRTHDAY. HE WAS ALSO KNOWN AS GIOVANNI MELCHIORRE BOSCO OR DON BOSCO.

St. John Bosco had a simple solution for classroom boredom. Educating children, whether it be in the classroom or at home, can be a difficult process. In particular, children can often grow bored of a subject and mentally “clock out,” leaving the teacher frustrated. To remedy the situation, St. John Bosco, an influential Italian priest of the 19th century, wrote a letter to help his teachers understand what they needed to do.

He related a story in his letter of an old pupil who needed help at his school. The boys were listless, bored and didn’t even enjoy games. His pupil asked, “But how can we bring these youngsters to life again, so that we can get back to the liveliness, the happiness, the warmth of the old days?”

St. John Bosco said plainly, “With charity!”

Surprised, his pupil responded, “With love? … I have done everything I possibly could for them; they are the object of all my affections.”

Don Bosco explained, “[The best thing is missing] that the youngsters should not only be loved, but that they themselves should know that they are loved.”

Still confused, Bosco gave a more lengthy explanation of what he meant.

By being loved in the things they like, through taking part in their youthful interests, they are led to see love in those things which they find less attractive, such as discipline, study and self-denial, and so learn to do these things too with love.

By a friendly informal relationship with the boys, especially in recreation. You cannot have love without this familiarity, and where this is not evident there can be no confidence. If you want to be loved, you must make it clear that you love. Jesus Christ made himself little with the little ones and bore our weaknesses. He is our master in the matter of the friendly approach. The teacher who is seen only in the classroom is a teacher and nothing more; but if he joins in the pupils’ recreation he becomes their brother.

He saw the relationship a teacher had with his/her students as a primary way to combat boredom in other subjects. If the student understands that he is loved by his teacher, then he will be more readily interested in those things that aren ’t his favorite activities.

This is one of the pillars of Salesian education, something that has been passed down over the years and has proven to be an effective means of reaching children of all ages.
