TAKE THE CHALLENGE FOR LENT!

When people think of Lent, many immediately think that it's the time we give up something that we enjoy—like chocolate, meat, a favorite TV program, etc. Actually, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and covers a period of approximately six weeks (40 days) before Easter Sunday. For the Christian, it is a time when the focus is on reflection, repentance, prayer, introspection, self examination, charitable deeds, and sometimes fasting in an effort to grow closer to God.

Last year, the Sunday Sermon Series focused on GIVE UP SOMETHING BAD FOR LENT by James W. Moore. This year, we will be using Adam Hamilton's newest book, JOHN for the Lenten Sunday Sermon Series.

The Adult Ministry Team would like to challenge you to read/study the Gospel of John---no, not just read the Gospel of John as that's too easy. We would challenge you to join a group and study the Gospel of John!

Why the Gospel of John for Lent? John's portrayal of Jesus is very different from the other Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. John records many events that are not found in the other Gospels. John's gospel is mostly set in and around Jerusalem. Jesus speaks in metaphors rather than in “plain language” and reveals Himself as the source of life. John's Gospel focuses on the meaning—the spiritual significance of Jesus's life.

John's Gospel uses the word “Believe” 98 times and the word “Life” 36 times in an effort to focus on the fact that one must believe in order to live eternally. In John, one finds the famous “I AM” passages, which point back to God stating I AM in Exodus 3:14. By so doing, Jesus makes it clear that He is Himself God.

The Gospel of John not only points to who Jesus is, but also challenges us to make a personal response to Jesus.

So, our challenge to each of you, to ALL of you this Lent, is that you not only pick up Adam Hamilton's book, JOHN, and read through it and the Gospel of John, attend worship, and listen to the sermons based on the Gospel of John, but that you actually take the challenge of attending a study group, because that's where real growth is possible!

The Adult Ministry Team

Sunday Sermon Series to be used in worship by

Pastor Kerrin and Pastor Steve The Gospel of John

by Adam Hamilton

The following are opportunities for you to join in the study of JOHN:

Experience a season of spiritual growth

and life-changing renewal while exploring

the major themes of John.

If I asked you what your favorite book in the New Testament is, I would probably be safe in thinking that many of you would tell me JOHN. I also imagine that many of you have read/studied The Gospel of John and are familiar with how it begins: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.......” Adam Hamilton has just released a Lenten Study on JOHN which has been selected for our next Sunday Sermon Series. It will begin on Sunday, February 14, 2016. JOHN is a unique gospel. It contains a lot of symbolism and as Hamilton peels back the layers of JOHN, he opens the door to deeper meaning and all kinds of connections to passages in both the Old and New Testaments. This exciting book offers a different approach to reading and studying the Gospel of John and promises to bring new insights. Beginning Sunday, February 14, the Sunday worship services will focus on the study of the Gospel of John. Copies of the book are available in the church narthex and office. There is no charge for the book, although donations are always welcome. Adults and High Schoolers are encouraged to join a group and enjoy the study of John during Lent.

If you have a birthday or other occasion in February and would like to be a part of the Asbury Foundation Ministry you may leave your gift (marked accordingly) in the church office or in the offering plate. For more information on the Birthday Fund or the Asbury Foundation, please contact the church office.

Roofing Update The Trustees would like to provide an update on the re-roofing of the church. Work has been

completed on all of the roof areas needing shingles. Replacement of the flat roof still remains to be done. This work will take place as soon as the daytime temperature begins to stay in the 40s. You might notice some ceiling tiles that are water stained and this will remain a problem until the flat roof work is completed. We will keep you advised of our progress on this part of the project supported by our capital campaign. Thank you for your commitment in maintaining our facility.

Super Bowl Soup and Snack Sale

Support our 4th & 5th Grade Kids Club as we raise funds to support Youth Hope, a ministry of Christian Friendliness ministering to more than 500 low-income kids and teens. We will be selling homemade soup mixes and game day snacks on Super Bowl Sunday, February 7th, 8:00 a.m. to noon.

Are you looking to join in and share in some way now that December has come and gone? Can you tie a knot? How would you like to contribute only four hours one day a month with DORCAS CIRCLE, making very simple, colorful quilts? When finished, the quilts are provided to those less fortunate. Some go to the local Red Cross chapter to be given to fire victims, some are given to Churches United’s Winnie’s Place shelter, and some are sent over to the Friendly Thrift Center for sale at very low cost. Dorcas Circle meets from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the third TUESDAY of the month.

Thank You! Thank you to the many faithful volunteers who showed up in all kinds of weather to once again cover all the hours of Salvation Army Bell Ringing at K&K Hardware from Thanksgiving through Christmas! The red kettle at K&K collected $7,952.00. This is about $650 more than the year before! Your help is very much appreciated and will help the Salvation Army in their goal to assist those in need throughout our community.

Thank you to Ruth McMorran and Bonne Lorenzen for providing altar flowers in January.

A sign up sheet is in the West Narthex year-round for anyone who would like to provide flowers for our altar on the Sunday of your choice. This is a nice way to honor a loved one or to celebrate a special occasion!

Hosts Needed!

We are looking for groups to host the all church meal on Wednesday evenings. The meal provides an opportunity for people in all of our Wednesday activities to come together to enjoy not only a good meal on a busy weeknight, but also to enjoy each other and to grow closer in Christ’s love. Please e-mail Cindy Bruhn at [email protected] or call her at 563-650-7963 with an indication of when your group might be able to serve. We need hosts for March 2, 9, 23, & 30, and April 6, 13, 20 & 27.

Most groups find this to be a fun way to serve the church and get to know new people. We hope that you will find that to be true as well. We welcome your feedback and thank you for all that you do for our church and community! Wednesday All-Church Meal Committee

It's that time of year that seed catalogs start appearing in the mail and my thoughts turn to the Garden Ministry. It's hard to believe that our Garden Ministry will be entering its 15th year. Over the past 14 years, over 400,000 lbs. of fresh vegetables have been harvested and distributed to local food pantries, meal sites, home shelters, and senior living apartment complexes. As some of you may know, I am currently serving as Governor of the Iowa Optimist District (through September 30th). As a result, my involvement in the Garden Ministry will not be at the same level as in past years. In order for the Ministry to continue to touch the lives of thousands in our local community, more "partners" (per Pastor Kerrin's recent sermon, we should replace the term "volunteers") are needed to get involved in the Ministry. I have scheduled a meeting for Sunday, February 21st, 7 p.m., at our church, to discuss the upcoming gardening season. I encourage those members interested in the future of this outreach Ministry to attend.

Yours in Feeding the Hungry. Dave Phillips

Garden Ministry Coordinator

Upcoming Events at Awana…. We've had a great first part of the year. We were blessed with God putting together a wonderful team of leaders to help with this ministry. We're looking forward to some exciting new projects and some old favorites! In February, Awana will be partnering with the 4th and 5th Grade Youth Group to collect and assemble care packages for a homeless shelter in the community. In March we will be participating in the Regional Awana Sparks-a-Rama games, we invite everyone to come out to Blackhawk College on March 19th to cheer on our Sparks and Cubbies. (Please ask Mark Jerson for more information on the games.) We'll finish out the year in April with a Bible Quiz and another combo activity with the 4th and 5th graders. We also have more fun theme nights coming up with Stuffed Animal Night and Talent Night. As always we invite any of the congregation to come down and visit us on Wednesday evenings 6:00-7:30pm in the LFH. We would love to have you learn about us and with us!

LOST! Do you have the wrong coat? On December 6 someone took a ladies’ black, size 1-X all weather coat and left a look-alike hanging next to it. The missing coat has a pair of glasses in the pocket. Please check your closet and return to church to make the switch. Thank you!

and we are asking the member churches to get involved on a new level this year. Since our fundraiser benefits all our member churches, we are asking each church to come in as a sponsor this year, to help us fund Diva Q as our celebrity guest. If each church donated just $25 we would have her costs paid. However, we’re hoping you’ll find it possible to give even just a little more than that, so we are posing a challenge. The church to bring in the most sponsorship money by February 29, 2016 will receive 10 free tickets to do with what they want and 4 free t-shirts. Each church that donates will get their name on a banner to be displayed at the event. The size of font will also go up as the donations amounts go up. Please send donations to Churches United C/O Meredith Dennis, 2535 Tech Drive, Suite 205, Bettendorf, Iowa 52722. E-mail Marketing/Event Planner Meredith Dennis at [email protected] if you have any questions. Here’s to making Big Bacon Bonanza the best yet!

MORE AHA MOMENTS From the 2015 Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit

Five members of Asbury attended the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit in August. The following submission is our way of sharing our Aha Moments each month in the hope that they will not only be a blessing but that they will also give us “food for thought” and challenge us to seek a deeper walk with Christ.

My AHA MOMENT at

Global Ministry Summit 2015 by Betsy Vanausdeln

Adam Grant:

Adam is the youngest tenured professor of Wharton. He has been named one of the world’s 40 Best Business Professors under the age of 40. His latest book, Give and Take, is available in the Resource Library in the office.

Are you a Taker? Are you a Giver? Are you a Matcher? At first glance at these terms, we might have an idea of which one we are, which one we want to be. A Taker is one who is out for themselves or their purpose. A Giver is one who gives and does everything for others without thinking of themselves. They are also thought of as the “fixers”. The Matchers are people who work and do things “Tit for Tat.”

Adam said we all will have a bit of each of these three roles, however, we have a dominant one. In a business, Givers lead to their downfall. Businesses tend to lean towards the Takers and the Matchers. Anything for the business, but will the company be successful? You would think yes…but the answer is no. For a business to be a success, they need Givers.

Whether we are making leaders for business or church, the key is to assure that the right people, with the right qualifications, attributes, and passion are placed in the correct role. I thought of Asbury and my current university position. Who are the leaders? With new and veteran members in our church, I see many potential leaders with many talents yet to share. There is a lot of untapped talent here at Asbury. If you’re not sure what your talent is or how you can serve and share, all you need to do is stop…listen to how God needs you…and move forward. Need a contact? Reach out to Pastor Kerrin or Pastor Steve.

Adam had some great views to become a passionate leader for all aspects of our lives. God is not done with us yet. Keep listening for his guidance. The Best is Yet to Come!

Easter Flowers The Worship Committee would like to give Asbury families the opportunity to purchase a potted plant to beautify the altar area with vivid spring flowers for Easter Sunday. This year because the pollen causes allergies to some, we will remove the stamen in the flowers before placing in the Sanctuary.

You may choose from the following plants at a cost of $10.00 each. Please attach a check or cash, and mail this form or drop it off in the church office by MONDAY, March 7th.

Selection (please enter quantity):
