A Word From Our Dean... ,Dear Cathedral Family, As we settle into our summer activities we may not be terribly interested to think about and plan for the autumn. But this is exactly what I want to ask you to do. For several reasons, lately, I have been thinking about Holy Confirmation. Indeed, one or two have asked about it. But more to the point, even though the rite takes place here five times each year, I have only presented two persons for it in the five years I’ve been with you all! Now I’m taking the wrap for this, but each of us has a responsibility in light of Holy Confirmation. The Sacrament of Confirmation is one of no small importance. Its principal blessing is that it gives us the opportunity publically to confirm the vows made for us at Baptism or to renew a commitment already made at an earlier confirmation. Likewise, it affords an opportunity to those who have been confirmed in other parts of the Church Catholic formally to be received as members of the Episcopal Church. Another of its blessings is that it insists that for once we focus ourselves on the place and dynamism of the Holy Spirit in our lives. I am certain that there are some (and not just young people) in the parish who would like to avail themselves of such blessings. If you are one of these, please contact me [email protected] or 401.331.4622, so that we can set up two classes, one for adults and one for young people, at convenient times, starting in September. The next Confirmation will be on the first Saturday in December, the 4th, at 10 am. This might be a very nice Advent present to give yourself! I look forward to hearing from many of you. In any event, do have a wonderful and relaxing summer. And lest we forget, the Parish family will continue to gather to thank and praise God each Sunday. See you in Church! Faithfully,
,Harry Krauss

From The Deacon’s Bench
Summer is always a time when we find ourselves with a bit more time on our hands. School is out, vacations are here and we can begin to enjoy nice weather, gardening, food preserving, or any of a myriad of sports. It is a good time to remember our neighbors who are daily doing without many of life’s necessities. Please remember to donate to the Food Closet, because summer is a time when the closet can get very lean. If you are inclined to knit or crochet on these lovely days, please come by my office and pick up a few skeins of yarn and make something for our Knitting Ministry. Especially on hot and humid days, if you can sit quietly in a cool place, you’d be surprised at how fast you can make a baby hat for the hospital or a shawl for someone in need of it. As always, I am happy to teach anyone who wants to learn. Summer is a good time to lend some thought to what new ministry might find a home at The Cathedral of Saint John this coming Fall. What gifts do YOU bring? How can you use those special and wonderful gifts that God has freely given you, and use them to help others? I am constantly amazed at the feeling that I get when I am able to give something of myself to others. Actually, I usually feel like I “get back” more than I give because of the fellowship and love that can come from working together to make a goal happen in God’s name. Enjoy the summer, relax and rejuvenate yourself and be ready to hit the ground running in September! Remember to laugh a little bit— see bellow— my sense of humor even invades my column this month! Your sister in Christ, Deacon Barbara

From Our Candidate for Holy Orders
My Dear Friends in Christ, On May 20, 2010, Bishop Wolf admitted me as a Candidate for Holy Orders. As most of you know, I will continue to work at the Cathedral of St. John under the guidance and supervision of Dean Krauss. I can’t begin to tell you how delighted I am about staying with you at the cathedral. I really feel as though I have found a home here because that is the way you, and the cathedral staff, have always made Linda and I feel, right at home. Speaking of Linda, we went down to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for the conferral of her doctoral degree. It was very exciting. We were there for 5 days. During that time, Linda was inducted into a professional society of educators on the morning of her graduation and a little later in the day, she became a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.); specializing in educational leadership. I have always been very proud of my wife, but that weekend I was bursting with joy for her and our entire family. She is our first doctor. As Linda says in all humility, “Not bad for an Italian kid from the North End of Providence born of Italian immigrant parents.” I couldn’t agree more. Speaking of education, we were all so very proud of our wonderful one room school house and all the children that have worked so hard during this academic year. Last Sunday, we celebrated their participation in the life of the cathedral of St. John and their support of the church’s mission to Haiti, as well as their continued involvement in the ‘Heffer Project.’ In special way we thanked God for blessing us with these ‘angels’ and for their devoted and beloved teacher, Santana Sluss. It was a privilege for me to preach on that Sunday and to acknowledge God’s work through these wonderful disciples as they sat at the feet of Jesus every Sunday. I would also like to extend congratulations to all the graduates of the class of 2010. May God bless you and keep you. Enjoy the warmth and beauty of God’s beautiful creation this summer. You can all be justifiably proud of a job well done. By the way, if you have graduated, please let us know so we can acknowledge your accomplishments. I am gratefully, your Candidate for Holy Orders. John Higginbotham

What is the symbol of YOUR real God? If you go to the office, or the store, or somewhere else, rather than go to church on Sunday morn-ing; if you buy a new car every year or so and pledge a few dollars a week to the support of the church; if you go on long vacations and don’t play your pledge to the church; if you say that the church is always asking for money, and you don’t give anyway, then the dollar sign is the symbol of your real god. If you have company, if you play golf, if you stay in bed when it’s raining, if you go fishing, if you loaf around the house – if you do these things rather than go to church on Sunday morning…if you stay away from church because you do not like the music, or the sermon, or the priest, or some-body who goes regularly – if you let these things keep you away from church, then “I” is the symbol of your real god. If you “worship God every Sunday in this Church” and if you say your prayers morning and night and grace at meals, if you fast on Fridays and before making your Communion, if you regularly ex-amine your life past and confess your sins, if you work with organizations of the church, if you let nothing stand in the way of worshipping God with all your heart and mind and soul, then the Cross is the symbol of your real God. Think it over. In what class do you fit? It is your life that you are dealing with, and in the end (when Our Lord shall come to judge the quick and the dead) you will be judged according to that life – the way you have lived it. -Thoughts from the Senior Warden-
Junior Warden’s Report: July, 2010
Blessings all!
Carpenter Rick Boyajian called to say the new doors are in for the church school area. He’s planning to put them in over the course of the next week or two. I expect to meet with Mike Cahill from AA Thrifty Sign next week and discuss a quote for the new lighted sign with a message board. M. Barboza & Sons has been awarded the contract for the Portico roof repairs and will be scheduling the work for sometime soon. Once that is completed the Weekend Warriors can get back to carpentry repairs and painting of the Portico. For now the “Warriors” have picked up matching paint and expect to put a coat on the plaster repairs completed around the north side Nave window. We are also making some repairs to cabinets in the kitchen area and doing general odd jobs as needed. Energy Efficiency came back this week to make some plumbing changes on the new furnace in an effort to improve its’ ability to maintain Nave area temperature in the dead of winter. Our National Grid rebate finally came in after sending the initial paperwork in, making several phone calls and submitting additional information. We asked for a $500.00 rebate and by the grace of God they sent us $5000.00!
See you in church! Andy
There were a few Sundays last winter when I sat in my pew and wished for warmer weather as our new furnace strived to adjust to it’s new home. I certainly seem to have gotten exactly what I wished for – and now that summer is officially here, the fans will be working as hard as the furnace did. I hope everyone will have a healthy, happy, and safe summer season. There will be many vacations, picnics, cookouts, and beach outings taking place – but let’s not forget Sunday Worship. Our commitment to God goes on, no matter the weather. Have a Happy Fourth of July, Everyone – and God Bless America! God’s Peace To All, Leah
