Summer is Here! Before heading outdoors to enjoy the long summer days, and obviously enjoy our golf make sure you’re armed with all the essentials for spending time in the sun safely: sunglasses, a hat and, most importantly, a good sunscreen. In addition to premature aging, excessive sun exposure puts our health at risk. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than 1 million cases diagnosed each year. Melanoma cases — the most serious and fastest-growing type of skin cancer — have doubled in the past 20 years.About 90 percent of skin cancers occur on the head, neck, ears, lips or hands — those areas that are in the sun most often. Other factors that play a role in the risk of skin cancer include our age, complexion (light-skinned people have the greatest risk), any prior family history of skin cancer, and geographic location of the country (the sunny Southern states are a hot spot for increased risk of skin cancer).A sunburn can happen anywhere, not just at the park or the pool. You are exposed to sun while driving, through a glass window in your home, or reflected off another surface such as concrete, sand or snow. The good news: It’s never too late to begin protecting your skin. Recent studies by the Skin Cancer Foundation state that on average, individuals have received only 23 percent of their lifetime sun exposure by age 18 — not 80 percent as formerly thought — so there’s always a health benefit to be gained by beginning new habits at any time in life.Lets protect ourselves, enjoy the summer and let’s keep it in the short rough!

When it comes to driver technology it can be hard totell what is marketing hype and what is realtechnology. There are all different innovations thatcompanies try out and even claim help golfers drivethe ball better. But more often than not, they are notreally all that beneficial. The new E9 face technologyof the Cobra S3 driver is the real deal.

Ryan HeimanIndependent Golf Reviews

I took this driver to the course andeven before hitting it, I liked what Isaw. The black crown and blacksole paired with a tall silver facewith a smooth Cobra alignment aidoffered a very pleasing look. It setsup nice and square in the Neutralposition and offers closed or opensettings. While it doesn’t have theadjustments of many other driverson the market, the main 3 areprobably the most usefulanyways. Too many options justcauses confusion. It does come in abit on the long side for many golfersat 45.5” but is a nice D4swingweight. The T006 Blur shaftby Fujikura is the real deal too. Idecided to go X-flex since previousexperience told me that the stockstiff was going to play a little soft. Iam a tweener on flexes so I wasglad I went to the X.

On the course I found an amazingconstancy of distance. It seemedthat swing after swing, all roundlong I was always the same distanceoff the tee. Even when I could tell Ihit it off center, the distance lossjust wasn’t noticeable on thecourse. While I wasn’t alwayshitting them perfectly straight, I wasgetting excellent distance.

Page 8: 2011 SUMMER EDITION

After the first round was over I took some time toexamine the face and sure enough the exact pattern ofthe new face was the pattern of my shots. Thereseemed to be just enough dimple residue to see thatelliptical pattern of my drives. High toe to low heel. Inthe next 4 rounds I found the same results, it was themost consistent driver I have ever hit distance wise. Ididn’t get any “Wow, where did that come from?” butI also didn’t have the “Why is this one so short?” Itwas right at the distance I get with most drivers.

In the past I’ve heard Cobra drivers from the otherside of the course, but not with the new Cobra S3driver. It offers a pleasant metallic whack. It is not toomuted, but not too loud. It is probably the mostpleasant sounding Cobra I’ve heard in a while.

The Fujikura T006 Blur shaft is the newest in their lineof great shafts. It is designed to be lightweight, yetstable. It offers a good mid launch with moderatespin. I seemed to hit nice flat tee shots with thisdriver. They would rise quickly to a mid height andthen flatten out nicely during mid flight. The ball hitthe ground with what seemed to be mid spin. I gotsome roll out, maybe about a dozen yards.

While this adjustable driver is great, I wish I couldpurchase more tips. Sure the Blur is a great shaft andworks well; but I still like to tinker and would like trysome other shafts, especially some ones that are notavailable through Cobra

The accessories that came with the driver all all verynice. There is a felt pouch to hold the wrench. Theheadcover is think and has a long sock to protect the shaftand the standard tour velvet grip is nice.

Also just introduced is a white version of this driver. Thehead is the same, but this one is paired stock with an AldilaRIP Beta shaft. It makes one stunning white combo. Whilethere is no performance benefit of white paint, it does lookcool. For more information: www.cobragolf.com

Open with a breathtakingperformance filled with thepromise of more majors tocome

Four days of flawless golf atCongressional ended Sundayafternoon with a 2-under 69 toshatter U.S. Open records thatsimply defy logic at the majorknown as the toughest test ingolf. The 22-year-old fromNorthern Ireland walked off the18th green and into the arms ofhis father, Gerry, who workedthree jobs so his only son couldpursue his passion. Not even hecould have imagined a day

Rory McIlroy buried thememory of his Mastersmeltdown the sameway he buried thecompetition at the US

Page 11: 2011 SUMMER EDITION

By such celestial standardsMcIlroy might have come upshort but it was a close-run thingas the Northern Irishmanexerted his dominance over afamously brutish course, as wellas a collection of the world'sbest. YE Yang, a PGAChampionship winner, LeeWestwood, the world No2,Sergio García, a fallen idol on theroad to recovery, and Jason Day,one of the leading lights of thegame's new generation – greatplayers reduced to the status ofHollywood extras. If only McIlroy had stayed athome this week, in Holywood, they would have contested a hellof a tournament. But he did notand they did not. Theirconsolation was a top-10 finishat a major championship and aringside seat on the daypotential greatness becamegreatness."Rory is going to have a greatcareer, there is no questionabout that. He has got all thecomponents,'' said Jack Nicklaus, the 18-time major championwho has become something of amentor to McIlroy over the lastfew years. "He is a great kid. Heis humble when he needs to beand confident when he needs tobe confident. He's a got a greatswing. He looks a little cocksurewhen he walks, which you needto have. I like it."

Records clearly show that Golf has been played in St Andrews for well over 600 years and, from rudimentary beginnings of a ball and stick game, played on rough and links land, the Town has always since been the source of every lasting development of the “Royal and Ancient Game”. The Home of Golf offers a unique experience in sport, as modern golfers can still experience for themselves the trials and tribulations of tight lies, deep bunkers and an incessant breeze –all of which the centuries have left unaltered. The Links offers Europe’s largest Golf Complex, with 5 other Courses, in addition to the Old Course; so, there is golf for all talents, even some putting on the Himalayas, with Members of the Ladies Putting Club. Off the Course, great icons of Scotland’s past can be seen in the Cathedral ruins, the Castle Ruins and the University, one of Europe’s finest and dating back to the early 15th century.

Driving a golf ball straight isthe one skill that had eludedme for much of my golfingexperiences. I always lovedhitting the ball as hard as Icould and see how far itwould go. Driving the balllong is the second mostenjoyable shot for me.(Hitting a long putt orchipping within a coupleinches is tied for first!)

Sure I hit a few straight shotsbut it was always a mistake.I'd always aim way leftbecause I hit a huge slice. If Idid hit it straight I'd end upin the left rough. That said, ifyou play enough golf, youknow that hitting a straightdrive is a confidence builder.Hitting the ball in the fairwaymeans you don't have totangle with long grass, treesor the many other assortedtroubles that lie in the leftand right rough.

This little info article tellsyou how I was able toconquer my slice and hitthat straight drive thatbuilds confidence and putsyou on the path to shootinglower scores.

1) GAPS - Grip Alignment Posture & Stance. Check them all and chill out on the Gorilla Grip2) Smooth and easy on the backswing then hit to 2nd base3) Think straight thoughts... then stop thinking! That's it...and just so you know, it works with the other clubs too! So let's get started.

To learn how to drive a golf ball straight, Ibroke down and took lessons. Tried doing itmyself, tried tips from friends, tried themagazines, tried the tapes, tried the tv showsand more. Nothing worked very well. Lessonsdid the trick and it did not take many to get mefixed. Here's the basics of what I learned.

Grip: The first change he made was my grip. I hadwhat he said was a neutral grip. He wanted me totwist my right hand more to the left. The otherproblem I had was that I was holding the club tootight. I had what he called a gorilla grip. Whilethat may work for a gorilla or a mechanic trying tobreak a bolt free, it does not allow for the smoothfreedom in the hands and forearms required foran effective golf swing.Alignment: Next was the alignment. Mine was nottoo bad. The key for me was to make sure my feetwere approximately parallel to the intended lineof flight of my golf ball. I did this naturally bylining up my shot from the rear. Picking a spotabout 5 feet out in front of my ball and liningmyself parallel to that line.

Posture: Same goes with posture. Just a good athletic posture as if you are going to take a short jump.Knees flexed slightly. Easy flex at the hips, shoulders up not hunched and I was ready to go. The onlything I had to remember was to keep my weight back initially and keep good balance on the balls of myfeet not my heels.Stance: My stance needed work. I was not putting the ball in the right place for my stance.
