do. I could help others and get that constant

human interaction, variety and challenge that

I was after in a career. Studying psychology at

Uni, working at summer camps in the states,

travelling all over the world, I realised I have

always been fascinated in human behaviour

and what drives people to do what they do.

It took me a while to write this success story, it

has been sitting on my to do list since October!

As I re-read the belief I have on my wall it says

“Success to me is measured by the fun I am

having, the lessons I learn and the people I

connect with. I am already succeeding.”

I started with TCI for my FOCS training weekend in August 2014. In July I was attracted by the title “Design your Life” and didn’t really know what kind of world I was walking into. I was incredibly nervous about rocking up as I had never done any personal development seminars in my life. At age 30 and feeling at a loss in my design/marketing career I figured I really had nothing to loose. Boy was that an eye opener, there were tears, ah ha moments, smiles and I hadn’t laughed that hard in a very long time. I originally signed up with TCI for my own personal development and after receiving my starter pack before FOCS I quickly realised that coaching was something that I would love to

coaching business. I’ve made tons of mistakes already and I intend to make lots more quickly. Like registering my first business name that didn’t really resonate with me. So for now I’m going by TLG Consulting it sits well for now. With a play on my last name of Gardner – “Your mind is a garden with thoughts as seeds, come see me to choose flowers over weeds”. I have no idea yet what my new business name will be as it rapidly develops into something else. I am working along side a few different businesses and opportunities keep popping up all over the place. Because I am putting myself out there, meeting people, telling people what I am doing and making it all about how I can help them, because that is what it is all about.

I HAVE HAD MANY SUCCESSFUL MOMENTS THROUGHOUT MY SHORT TIME SO FAR AT TCI INCLUDING A WORKSHOP I RAN AT MY LOCAL GYM, A TALK TO LATROBE LAW STUDENTS, VISION ON CANVAS WORKSHOPS AT MULTIPLE LOCATIONS, INSPIRING MY NETWORKING GROUP WITH A SHORT TALK. I GOT MY FIRST PAYING CLIENT THROUGH NETWORKING, AND A FEW MORE SINCE THEN.

My plan is to continue combining my art and my coaching to run fun, inspiring, creative

THERE HAS BEEN A TON OF SUCCESS ALREADY AND IT IS NOW TIME TO WRITE THIS BASED ON MY AWESOME EMPOWERING BELIEF ABOVE. I HAVE SOOOOOO MUCH FUN, I LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY AND THE PEOPLE I MEET ARE AMAZING!

My life before TCI was in marketing with LOTS of travel in between jobs. I left a job in October of 2013 to pursue my graphic design career. I had very little belief in my skills and abilities and am only now realising and appreciating the skill I do have. There was a lot I needed to work through and I didn’t even know this world of coaching existed. A temporary job in IT was getting me through the days while I worked on my design applications and building my portfolio at lunch/night and on the weekends. Hindsight is a beautiful thing and I realise now that by going down that path I would have been stuck in front of a computer for 8-12 hours a day and I felt I had more to offer. For someone who is highly driven by variety, adventure and connection, it was the wrong path for me. TCI has helped me to understand myself as to why I have constantly left jobs, why I leave countries, why I loose stuff all the time, hahaha. Knowing all this now I can help others even more, work in a fulfilling career and build lots of amazing friendships with like minded and inspiring people throughout the community and the world.

I am now working on building a one on one

I am a learning machine and I have Sharon, Joe and Tony Robbins in my ear all the time, on my bike, on my runs, in my car, they are on repeat.

I ATTRIBUTE MY SUCCESS TO CONTINUING TO TAKE ACTION, AND APPLYING MY LEARNINGS. TO LISTENING TO THE ADVICE GIVEN BY THOSE WHO HAVE COME BEFORE ME. TO STEPPING OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE AND JUST DOING IT. I ATTRIBUTE IT TO KNOWING THAT I CAN CREATE MY LIFE ANY WAY I WANT IT AND I CHOOSE TO CREATE IT WITH OTHERS IN MIND AND CREATING A FANTASTIC LIFE FOR MY WONDERFUL NEW FIANCE AND I.

Thank you to Sharon, TCI and the wonderful community you have created. You have opened my eyes to a whole new crazy world that I absolutely love and it loves me too.

I feel so grateful to have stumbled across it on Facebook. Who would have thought it.

workshops that help people get to the heart of what they want and need.

How did I get all of these speaking gigs? I asked and I continue to ask. I felt the fear and did it anyway. I was not a public speaker before this, the only time I would get up in front of a crowd would have been after a few glasses of wine. I now ask better questions of myself like “What is the worst that can happen? What can I learn from this? Am I giving value to this person/these people?”

TO BE A CHAMPION, I THINK YOU HAVE TO SEE THE BIG PICTURE. IT’S NOT ABOUT WINNING AND LOSING; IT’S ABOUT EVERY DAY HARD WORK AND ABOUT THRIVING ON A CHALLENGE. IT’S ABOUT EMBRACING THE PAIN THAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE AT THE END OF A RACE AND NOT BEING AFRAID. I THINK PEOPLE THINK TOO HARD AND GET AFRAID OF A CERTAIN CHALLENGE.

that. However, motivation comes from behind us. It is the dog biting at our ankles, telling us we are not quite there yet. Motivation sits behind us on the bus, whispering in our ear that we ought to get out and walk the next two stops. We can choose to get out and follow this through, or we can sit in the comfort of our seat and watch the trees as they whiz by.

Suddenly, our mind turns to what we see outside, and we notice the trees and the sea and the beauty that is around us. Within this space we get a burst of creative inspiration as we begin to see the big picture. We have become aware of our surroundings and ourselves and are now moving towards what we want.

1. MOTIVATION AND MOVING AWAY

Imagine this: John is sick of being overweight and wants to lose weight in order to no longer experience the pain he is currently in. In the world of coaching we talk of moving away language.

In this example John is moving away from being overweight and what he doesn’t want. John is likely to gain motivation from others, from his personal trainer, his coach and largely external sources as he strives to meet his goals.

When we are motivated we may be extremely determined and set on a particular goal (due to whatever it is we are moving away from) and we won’t let anything, or anyone, interfere with

2. CHANGE YOUR FUTURE, CHANGE YOUR AWARENESS

“Everything in the universe is within you. Ask all from yourself.” RUMI

To feel inspired requires us to move into a new stage of awareness. When we listen to the stories that go round and round in our heads about not being good enough and not belonging we are remaining in the problem and not allowing ourselves to move toward the solution.

Changing ourselves means letting go of the inner critic and these limiting beliefs that have kept us stagnant, and in doing so, changing our awareness of ourselves. It doesn’t require us to fight or push, it simply occurs. Dr. Wayne Dyer suggests that when we are in this space an idea gets a hold of us and takes us where we want to go. We just have to listen, be present, and be aware of the thoughts in our mind. Once we become aware of these we can choose to let go of the ones that no longer support us and instead create beliefs that will support us and take us in the direction we want to go.

In order for this to happen we need to cultivate stillness. Being still allows us to come back to our true self and opens ourselves up to creative inspiration. We only need to be willing to stop and listen to the beating of our heart and it is here that our natural abilities will emerge.

“The quieter you become the more you are able to hear.” Rumi

3. MANIFEST THE LIFE YOU DESIRE: FOCUS ON YOUR VISION

“Our creative life energy goes where we focus our attention and awareness.” Dyer

Michael Gerber in his book “The E-Myth” discusses the importance of having a clear vision of our business right from the outset. He recommends writing this vision down and placing it in a space that we can see it and getting to work on that vision every day. Our mindset is one in which our focus is entirely on where we want to go.

Napoleon Hill also discusses this in his book “Think and Grow Rich.” He believes that when we are focused on where we want to go, and we have goals in place, we can let go of who, what, when, why and how we will get there because we have stopped forcing and have started believing it is possible.

In order to do this we have to shift our attention away from the problem and instead focus on the solution. If we focus on what we want we will manifest this into our lives.

“Focus on imperfection, imperfection manifes t s. Intention , at tent ion and manifestation - that is how the universe manifests.” Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

When we are completely focused on where we are headed, inspiration will take us where we are intended to go.

THE ODD SOCK LEADER IS NOT AFRA ID TO ASK THE QUESTION THAT CAN CHANGE THAT SITUATION. THE ODD SOCK LEADER KNOWS THAT BY ASKING THE QUESTION THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN IS

ASKS THE QUESTION

Odd SockLEADER

THE

We all come up against those times when we are told “no” or we feel limited by the rules of something. How many times do we see disappointment and frustration arise from those situations?

THEY ARE NOT BETTER OFF THAN THEY WERE BEFORE ASKING.

One of my sons was recently in a sporting event where they were given one opportunity to have a throw at three different things to possibly win a multi event in their age group. My son is a good Javelin thrower and was

Page 19: The Successful Coach Magazine Apr '15

page 19

looking forward to this part of the event. At the throw he stumbled and his throw fell a little flat, so head down he started to wander off. I suggested to him that he could ask for another throw, as other children had had second throws where things were not going quite right for them. His response was, “it’s the rules Mum, you can only have one throw.” I continued to push and he suggested, “Could you ask for me?”

The officials were only too happy to give him another throw… in actual fact they gave him two more throws; I think they got caught up in the excitement of seeing just how far he could throw. Anyway, he didn’t do his personal best, but he did win the overall multi event for his age group.

My son now understands the idea that asking the question does not leave you any worse off than you were before you asked. This was a great reminder to me too. How many times do we get constricted by what we “know to be the rules” or what we think the rules are?

T H E O D D S O C K L E A D E R R E C O G N I S E S T H A T I T I S UNCOMFORTABLE TO ASK AND THAT IF WE DON’T… WELL THEN WE ARE JUST ACCEPTING MEDIOCRITY .

When something happens we focus on the event; we focus on what has happened and how it affects us. We are wired to see the “me” in any situation; we want people to recognise our pain, be justified in our feelings or our actions . Our EGO gets in the way, and

the pain of asking the question is greater than the pleasure we get from not asking. Example: it was easier for my son to accept that he did not have a good throw – after all, some days his throws aren’t great – than to ask the question for fear of rejection .

It’s not only about questioning a rule or a belief about a situation; we also need to question our belief system and challenge the meaning that we have given to something .

“Nothing has meaning except the meaning we have given it,” according to Tony Robbins. This quote is so amazingly powerful. It also explains so many things. In Sharon Pearson’s series “Extraordinary Living” she backs this concept up with an example of people all having their own version of the one event. Witnesses in a car crash see the event from “their” perspective; they base what they saw on the “meaning” that they have attached to the course of events.

T H E O D D S O C K L E A D E R WILL QUESTION THEIR TEAM MEMBERS INDIVIDUALLY TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING THAT THEY HAVE PLACED ON SOMETHING. THEY CAN THEN ASK “WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF?” QUESTIONS TO CHECK INDIVIDUAL BELIEFS AND HELP THEM TO SHIFT ANYTHING THAT IS NOT RESOURCEFUL.

The meaning that my son had placed on “not

Page 20: The Successful Coach Magazine Apr '15

being able to throw again” was based from experiences he had with ordinary events. Normally in throw events, athletes are given three chances to throw and the best score is taken. My son had placed the emphasis of his belief on the number of throws to be had rather than on “throwing my best”. In the multi event, the officials were giving one opportunity for each child to throw (there were a lot of kids to get through), but they were also encouraging each child to give it their best shot. So in this instance the “rules” had a different focus, one that was not familiar to my son.

QUESTIONS ARE SO POWERFUL IN EVERYTHING WE DO. THEY HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THE OUTCOME OF EVERYTHING. NOT HAPPY WITH A RESULT? ASK THE QUESTION… YOU NEVER KNOW WHERE IT WILL LEAD. MAYBE YOU WILL WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP AS WELL.

page 20

1. Rules – not to be confused with laws. Rules are designed to manage a situation or process, whereas laws are designed to protect and govern behaviour.

2. Things – javelin, discus and shot-put – a word to describe all three eludes me at this moment.

3. Let’s not get into the issue relating to teaching my child to ask for himself and learn; he learnt from the experience… trust me.

4. I actually prefer ‘ordinariness’, but who knows how to spell that?

5. Yes we can change this and recommending “above the line/below the line” exercises is a great idea.

6. Pain meaning the feelings associated with going outside of our comfort zone where we may get embarrassed.

7. Not actually fun or enjoyable pleasure; it is “I am used to this feeling and it’s comfortable” pleasure.

8. Rejection can be different for different people, as it relates to the beliefs that are attached to someone saying no in that situation. Some might feel “silly” for asking. Some might feel they are “looked down” on for asking.

9. Something is another one of those fantastic words that you can use when you just can’t put your finger on the word you want.
