Dear Parents,

You would be aware that our College Core Values are: Christ First, Serve One Another, Strive for Excellence, Do What’s Right and Build Community. These values are not ‘set and forget’ words that are pulled off the shelf and dusted from time to time, but dynamic principles that permeate through all areas of College life on a daily basis. In our endeavour to continually Strive for Excellence, the St Philip’s Christian College Foundation, through the McCrindle organisation, conducts an annual survey across all St Philip’s schools, that invites responses from students, parents and staff. Results from the survey, which are summarised in the info-graphic below, are used by executive staff as they seek to determine areas of strength and areas in need of attention in order to set future goals. Please note that these results are specific just to our school; St Philip’s Christian College – Newcastle. Any comments or feedback are welcome.

In 1984, Graeme Evans was a young teacher hoping to get permanent work. That desire became permanent indeed when he was offered a position in the fledging St Philip’s Christian College in its third year of operation. Thirty-five years on, Graeme is a well-known and well-loved member of staff who has dedicated his career to the College. After Executive Principal Graeme Irwin, Graeme Evans is the longest serving member of staff across the entire organisation.

Graeme’s first class had twelve Year 4 students and took place in a room at the top of the old house. The evening before he was to start teaching, a Board member came into the room to paint a black board onto one of the walls with blackboard paint. Playground duty was done from the balcony of the old house where there was a great view of the whole playground. In his first year at SPCC, Graeme instigated the first trip to Canberra.

In 1989, a Board Inspector advised the Head of Junior School, Michael Dunn that he needed someone to help him. Graeme was appointed to the position of Deputy Head of Primary School.

In 1992 Graeme began what has become a legendary St Philip’s rite of passage, the Coachwood camp. In looking at the primary programs, Graeme Irwin, told Graeme Evans there was not enough poetry in the English curriculum. The idea was born to take students into the bush and give them an experience to write about. The Ballad of Coachwood was born.

Graeme continued to be an innovative teacher who was known for his great care for students. One of his students, Brittany Flinn, remembers this about him.“Mr Evans was to me - the epitome of what I wanted and needed in a teacher. He was tall (to me), strong and capable, but soft, funny and warm - as a struggling kid, he was like the best friend, the father and the leader I needed, we all needed, rolled into one. My favourite memories with him involve his crazy antics with our camping trip to Coachwood, our class fish, Oscar, and the way he tolerated me starting an anti-animal cruelty group in year 7. When Mr Evans said his door was always open, he meant it. We knew he truly had our backs. Mr E, I am eternally grateful for the impact you had on my life and I’m sure many others are too.”

When the idea of a Middle School was being investigated in 1998, Graeme had serious misgivings, so he joined the committee in order to help them ‘avoid wrong decisions’. Throughout this time, Graeme was prayerful, and earnest in his research, and he came 180 degrees in his viewpoint. Graeme was appointed as Head of Middle School and led the St Philip’s community in changing to the three sub-school model. So strong were his convictions about the value and purpose of middle schooling that Graeme ended up serving as the President of the Middle Years Association of Australia and New Zealand for many years.

In 2017, Graeme was promoted to the role of Assistant Principal as he continued to lead the Middle School. In 2018, Graeme moved into the role of Deputy Principal. He gets great enjoyment in being involved in the life of the whole College.

Graeme holds a Masters of Educational Leadership from UNSW and is a certified Gallup Strengths Coach. He uses this knowledge and skill base to bring a strengths focus to the College as he works with staff, leaders, and students.

Throughout his 35 years at the College, Graeme has been strongly supported by his wife Jane, and sustained by his close family ties. He loves spending time with his family, cycling, hiking, babysitting his grandchildren, and serving in his church, Northlakes Salvation Army. We are so glad that God called Graeme to St Philip’s Christian College and rejoice in the ways that He has used Graeme’s gifts to strengthen the educational and community life of the College. He is a person who exemplifies the Core Values in all he does. His key verse is Malachai 4:2, “For you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays.” May this continue to be true for you and your family Graeme, as you continue to serve in this place.

Year 11 Design and Technology students travelled down to Sydney on Thursday, 14th March to visit the Powerhouse Museum. The museum was home to the SHAPE exhibition of exemplar HSC Major Design Projects from 2018. The students immersed themselves with industry experts, experimented and interacted with tools, materials and technologies on show, and were inspired by last year’s HSC projects and portfolios. It was a very successful and eye-opening excursion for the students who will soon be starting their own Major Project journey in Term 4 this year. Design Technology teachers Rebecca Garred and Sophie Maher were incredibly proud of these students’ focus and excited attitude throughout the day.

Construction students are generally active, confident, outgoing young men. These traits make them influential leaders among their peer group. Harnessing and nurturing these leadership skills during Year 11, provides the opportunity for

students to use their talents to serve others during school and beyond. Our hope is to soften their hearts to the plight and need of others by taking them to Indonesia, connecting with school Sekolah Pelita Harapan for their mandatory construction

work placement. This will allow them to complete a building project for a local Village School, developing their civic and spiritual intrinsic responsibility

as active global citizens.

Financial aid will be used to either support a student who could not afford to attend, contribute to the cost of supplies in Indonesia for the renovation project and/or sustain future projects.

We will partner with Sekolah Pelita Harapan regarding the project. We are seeking support from our local school community and wider community to provide either/or:
