FOCUS ON WORSHIP EPIPHANY
The word “Epiphany” is Greek for appearance or manifestation.
The Epiphany of Our Lord is the January 6 festival celebrating the
appearance of Christ to the world, recalling the visit of the magi.
The gift of gold was very valuable and fit for a king. Frankincense
was a type of incense used in Worship, symbolizing prayers rising
to God. Myrrh was a fragrant resin used in oil for anointing and to
prepare a body for burial. Some Christian traditions celebrate three
great epiphanies on this day: the magi's adoration of the Christ child,
Jesus' baptism in the Jordan River, and his first miracle, in which he
changes water into wine. The word and sacraments are for us the
great epiphany of God's grace and mercy. We go forth to witness to
the light that shines brightly in our midst.
BAPTISM OF OUR LORD
The Baptism of Our Lord occurs on the First Sunday after the
Epiphany of Our Lord. This Sunday recalls Jesus’ Baptism in the
river Jordan by John the Baptist. The image of the descending dove
calls to mind our own baptism and how the Holy Spirit is invoked to
sanctify our lives.

A Note from Pastor Fred
Behold I make all things new!
Pastor Fred’s church office hours are Wednesdays 9:00am to 2:00pm.
Please call the office if you would like to schedule an appointment for
a different date. Pastor’s email address is: [email protected].
So saith the Lord, but how about you? Starting the New Year has a lot of implications for most of us: the things we want to change, future plans, uncertain fears, hedging our bets on finances, resolutions that fade into oblivion by springtime. For me, given the fact that the majority of my years are over, I ponder more lately about 'setting my house in order'. You know what I mean, where are the insurance papers, a copy of our will, who to call in the event of you-know-what. I have to remind myself often that what I preach on Sunday is not only for you; it is also for me; that what I say not only goes to your ears but bounces off the back wall of the church and confronts me, always hoping that I hear a message that is grace filled. I volley back and forth between the fear of dying and the grandeur of what God's will is when all things will be made new for me. However, I really do think that before I face Jesus that I, along with you, will have some wonderful opportunities in this coming year of 2014 to make things new.
I am one who believes that the Holy Spirit does not work through a single person but through the gathered community, a commu-nity that - shall I say it - does justice, loves mercy, and walks humbly with God. I am hoping that this year as we walk into the church to worship, we will look up and see those words, take them to heart and let them define who we are here at St. Luke. In the meantime as scripture records: the grass withers and the flower fades but the word of the Lord is forever. That word in the person of Jesus defines all that we strive to do here and now and points to a final destiny where all things will be made new. A happy, gracious and blessed New Year to you my sisters and brothers in Christ. In peace, Pastor Fred
MID-WEEK BIBLE STUDY GROUP
Pastor’s Mid-Week Bible Study Group resumes on Wednesday, January 8 at 10:30am. Classes meet every Wednesday morning at 10:30am in the conference room. There is no need to bring a Bible, we have plenty here to work with. Please come and join us!
2014 Altar Flowers
Would you would like to honor someone, remember someone or celebrate a special occasion? You can do so by donating the cost of Sunday altar flowers, which are $27.00 for an arrangement. You will be billed directly from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers are yours to take home after both services that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or home-bound members. Please contact Jean Stewart to sign up or if you have any questions.

As we approach a year whose name sounds altogether strange (something like
Farenheit 451), I am all excited about our anthem for Epiphany, on January 5th.
My friend who conducted the Vivaldi Gloria last spring has
graciously allowed us to borrow a young tenor from his
choir to sing Three Kings from Persian Lands Afar. Very
popular in England, this is a 19th century song written by
the German opera composer Peter Cornelius (1824-74) The
solo melody weaves atop the German chorale “How
Brightly Shines the Morning Star” (Wie schön leuchtet der
Morgenstern) see ELW 308 and 786.

1. Three Kings from Persian lands afar
To Jordan follow the pointing star:
And this the quest of the travellers three,
Where the new-born King of the Jews may be
Full royal gifts they bear for the King;
Gold, incense, myrrh are their offering.
How brightly shines the morning star!
With grace and truth from heaven afar
Our Jesse tree now bloweth.
2. The star shines out with a steadfast ray;
The kings to Bethlehem make their way,
And there in worship they bend the knee,
As Mary’s child in her lap they see;
Their royal gifts they show to the King;
Gold, incense, myrrh are their offering.
Of Jacob’s stem and David’s line,
For thee, my Bridegroom, King divine,
My soul with love o’erfloweth.
3. Thou child of man, lo, to Bethlehem
The Kings are travelling, travel with them!
The star of mercy, the star of grace,
Shall lead thy heart to its resting place.
Gold, incense, myrrh thou canst not bring;
Offer thy heart to the infant King.
Thy word, Jesu, Inly feeds us,
Rightly leads us, Life bestowing.
Praise, O praise such love o’erflowing.
Here is a capsule of faith: light, offering, grace, truth, worship, divine, love, mercy,
praise, all from and for each other and from and for the Lord who gives us life.
Hopes for the new year:
new gold scapulars to embellish the plain white robes we wear on festival days;
a choir retreat where we can enjoy fellowship and enhance our skills;
the recruitment of one or two new members;
a MIDI set up in the choir room so I can compose and transpose music;
more anthems with flute accompaniment;
more use of the handbell ringers in our worship service liturgy and music;
musical worship on Lenten Wednesdays;
enticing community members to bring music to our beautiful sanctuary in the
form of concerts and presentations.
DON’T FORGET THE TALENT SHOW on March 4, Shrove Tuesday.
Non-musical acts are encouraged: skits, story-telling, juggling, dancing.
Bring it on!

The year 2013 was a wonderful year of taking God’s Work. Our Hands. to heart at
St. Luke! Below are just some of our actions during the year. Great work everyone!
God’s Work. Our Hands Day of Service - Notes for our Military and Homebound.
A goal of 100 Mosquito Nets to help fight Malaria - We more than doubled our
goal - 210!
We adopted Paul, our 4 year old from Zambia with all groups sponsoring a month!
Our youth distributed Hygiene Kits to the Homeless at “The Gathering”. All of us
donated to make the kits.
Quilters worked on quilts each month for Lutheran World Relief. We have made over 12.
The Crop Walk had 25 walkers and won the “Golden Sneaker” for their participation!
Our Food Drive for the Central Food Bank went way over the top!
WELCA collected books for children and Hats & Mittens for St. Joseph Villa.
We collected Sox and Tees for the orphanage boys in Honduras.
Our Angel Tree provided Christmas gifts for the residents of Envoy.

We are continuing with our program to do
Last year Gerry Grass alerted us to a program he was involved in during his tour of duty in
Honduras. Thanks to Gerry and Stephanie we were able to help collect sox and tees for the
orphanage.
You might be involved with an organization needing a few extra hands or know of a need in our
community.
During January we will have a suggestion box in the Narthex for your input. We may be able to
help with your suggestion. Please look for the Suggestion box and help us help others.

Souper Bowl Sunday Lunch Join us Sunday, February 2nd for a
Super Bowl of Soup on Souper Bowl of Caring Day.
Our Youth are planning a Soup Lunch just for you! As we enjoy a hot bowl of soup on a
winter February day, our monetary donations for the lunch will be used to feed the hungry in
the Richmond area.
The Souper Bowl of Caring utilizes Super Bowl weekend in America to mobilize young people to fight hunger and poverty in
their local communities. Its vision is to transform Super Bowl weekend into America’s largest youth-led weekend of giving and
serving. 100% of the money and food is then given directly to local charities.
The Souper Bowl of Caring began in 1990 with a simple prayer said by Rev. Brad Smith of Spring Valley Presbyterian Church
in Columbia, South Carolina -
“Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat.”
22 churches raised $5,700 in the first year. The number of groups involved has steadily grown each year,
and so has the amount raised and put back into the communities. In 2013, 8,118 participating groups
collected $7,481,495 in cash and food items for charities in their area.
Come to Lunch February 2nd
and help Tackle Hunger !
This is a Youth sponsored Service Project.
Thanks!
