President’s Message

Life is good, life is good. I am reminded of this saying as one of our guests at our hunting

lodge in South Dakota, continually says this throughout the day. He says this no matter if

he misses a bird, witnesses an especially difficult retrieve by one of our dogs, or makes a

picture perfect shot at a rooster pheasant that was flushed at his feet. He is always happy.

It is a smiling reminder to me that all the activities we participate in through out the year

with our springers can be viewed by this simple saying that life is good.

This was brought out again to me at a recent trial in Nebraska. My granddaughter

Kate has been running her dog Yanta this year. At that trial she had a good first series but

only had two traps and no retrieves. Second series her first bird was a trap and Kate takes

the bird from Yanta and hands it to the Judge. The judge tells her to carry on. Now Yanta

has had three traps in the trial, has had a couple of honors that he has had to sit through,

so he is getting edgy for a retrieve. A quick find on Yanta’s next bird, steady to flush and a

four-shot volley on a missed bird from the guns and Yanta breaks. After calling Yanta in

and turning to leave the judge said, “Sorry Kate”. Her response with a smile on her face

was “That’s OK, I was rooting for the bird”. It brought a smile to my face to realize a

youngster in this game can have an attitude of happiness despite the disappointment of

her dog breaking.

When we have an issue with the performance of our dogs, decisions of the judges,

organization of a trial or show, or any of the activities at the events we participate in,

always look for the positive side. It makes more a more harmonious outcome for all

involved.

As always there is much going on in the ESSFTA organization. Check out the Parent

Club web site for all the bench and show events and the ESSFT.com for the field calendar.

Our annual meeting will be held in Minneapolis April 26, 27, 2019. The nominating

committee is putting together a slate of officers. Any agenda items members wish to bring

up just mention to any of the officers and it can be on the agenda.

Remember, Life is Good.

Respectfully submitted, ~~Mark Haglin

Five years ago, Ginger Huxley, introduced nosework activities to the National

Specialty as a demonstration. She kept bringing it back every year as a fun

event, until this year, when her effort paid off with our Inaugural ESSFTA AKC

Scent Work Trial at the 2018 National. It was a bigger success than we

imagined it would be, requiring us to add a second judge to meet the level of

interest. Our goal was for everybody who wanted to run, to get in, with no

wait list. We had 105 entries with dogs in Novice, Advanced and Excellent

classes. The predicted rain held off thru all classes until the very last of the

day. The judges and workers, and a few exhibitors got soaked at the very

end. Judges Ginger Huxley and Kathy Pierce set out great hides for all levels.

The most exciting thing for me was to see entries from springers of all backgrounds – Conformation, Agility,

Obedience, Tracking, Hunting and a lot of Rescue Dogs. We had entries from dogs that came just for Scent Work. This

is truly a venue for everybody and every dog. Springers excel at this activity. Young or old – they can all do it and they

love it. It is a great activity for our senior dogs who are retired from more strenuous activities. It is a great way to

introduce our young dogs to problem solving. And what a great way to bring new people into dog sports and expand

participation in the National Specialty.

Plans for a Scent Work Trial at the 2019 National are already in the works. I think this is the start of a new

tradition.

Building a Brighter Future A Look at our ESS Foundation

“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make

our lives whole,” said immortal dog lover and

writer-philosopher, Roger Caras.

Our dogs, present and past, shape our lives, our hearts,

and our dreams.

Have you had that one dog who put your feet on

the path to dogs being the centerpiece of your life?

Dog fanciers understand love that never dies, but

imprints our hearts with the truth that dogs give more

to humans than we could ever repay.

We can give back to the breed that has served and

loved us by supporting the work of our English Springer

Field Trial Association Foundation

Nancy Johnson (Wedgewood Springers) recently

shared exciting foundation accomplishments and goals

that enhance Springer health, history and education.

Johnson’s enthusiasm for the work of the foundation

reminds us that donations to our foundation support

work to make lives of future Springers better, while we

pay tribute to past dogs who have loved us.

Johnson said, “The English Springer Field Trial Association Foundation began in 1996. It is a private, tax-exempt foundation funded by tax deductible contributions to research and improve English Springer Spaniel health and genetic soundness and that educates breeders, owners and the public about Springers, their health and genetics. http://englishspringerfoundation.org/health-projects “The Foundation, with our parent club, the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association, has established one of the largest DNA banks of any breed. The Foundation continues to encourage submissions to the DNA bank by sponsoring blood draws at national events. “The Foundation and the Parent Club provide

significant support to the AKC Canine Health

Foundation Tick Borne Disease Initiative (to) benefit all

dogs with earlier and more accurate diagnosis and

better treatments. The Foundation supports epilepsy

and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) research. We

participate in a joint effort with the AKC Canine Health

Foundation (www.akcchf.org/) to further PRA research.

The Foundation will fund up to $100,000 in research

grants. This funding is the result of donations from

caring Springer owners. From earlier work on PRA, a

genetic test was developed to determine the

prevalence of PRA and to assist breeders in eliminating

the disease.”

Thanks to great outreach support from the AKC,

“over 25,000 health surveys were sent to Springer

owners when the Foundation launched a

comprehensive health survey in 2017. Our survey

mirrors a survey conducted by the United Kingdom’s

Springer club. Over 8,000 surveys were returned and

analyzed. The good news is that the breed in the US is

very healthy. Over half of the living dogs submitted

had no health conditions to report. The most

prevalent health complaints reported were ear and

skin problems. Of the dogs already deceased at the

time of the survey, cancer was the greatest cause of

death. The Foundation will continue in-depth analysis

of the survey results and work with researchers

where there might be the possibility of research

projects.

“Several years ago, the Foundation entered into

an agreement to establish a Cancer Tissue Bank at

the University of Missouri. The Foundation has

prepaid the processing fee for the first 100

submissions of cancerous tissue to the bank. This

tissue will allow researchers to study the genetic

footprint of cancers that affect not just Springers, but

all dogs and can possibly impact research into human

cancers.

Information on

collection and

submission of

tissue is

available on the

website. Since

cancer was the

greatest cause

of death for

Springers in the

survey,

submission of

tissue to the

bank could have

long-reaching

impact.”

The Foundation works hard to “archive memorabilia

and historical materials at the National Bird Dog Museum and Bird Dog Hall of Fame in Grand Junction, TN (https://www.birddogfoundation.com/). This opens the door for a program to manage and encourage gifts of such materials to the ESS Foundation. A ‘virtual library’ is being created for the Foundation website. http://englishspringerfoundation.org/springer-memories/conformation-memories http://englishspringerfoundation.org/springer-memories/field-trial-memories The Foundation has sponsored very successful

and well- received ‘Breeder Showcases’ at several

National Specialties. Breeders showcase their dogs

and fanciers meet the dogs and talk to the breeders.

The Foundation also hosts educational events at both

Bench and Field national events to showcase

research being conducted on behalf of Springers.”

Have you visited the Foundations two Memorial

Gardens? These gardens enable owners and friends

to make a donation to memorialize people and dogs

that are special to them. Johnson explains …

http://englishspringerfoundation.org/

memorialgarden/UF.html

http://englishspringerfoundation.org/memorialgarden/Ep.html “Every donation to the Foundation contributes

toward preservation of health, history and breed

education.” Using a secure donation portal on the

Foundation website is quick and easy. You may

designate the program or individual you wish to

honor and support with your donation.
