What Matters to Us

Welcome Breakfast 2010September 19th at 9:30 AM in Taylor HallPlease join us for a welcome breakfast in Taylor Hall. This is your opportunity to reconnect with one another after the summer break, meet our Church School teachers, and confirm that your child’s registration information is correct (or to register your child for the first time). The classroom assignments for each grade will be posted so you can take your child to their Church School room by 9:50 AM in time for their first class.

The goal of Children’s Christian Formation at Christ Church is to help our children learn the Bible more fully, grasp their faith more deeply, and gain a tangible sense of God’s love for them. Much of the curriculum revolves around the art of storytelling and active engagement with the great stories of our faith. Additional crafts and activities will be offered each week, especially for the Godly Play classes, to augment the learning of this material, but at the end of the day it is these stories of God’s relationship with humanity that we want our children to know.

Godly PlayAges Three Through First GradeAt Christ Church we have two Godly Play classes, an older and a younger group. The goal of Godly Play is to teach children the art of using religious language, parable, sacred story, silence, and liturgical action to help them become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence around them and in their lives. Godly Play is Montessori-based and uses high-quality wooden pieces to focus the children’s attention on the wonder of the story and encourage them to internalize their faith through the rhetorical questions that are part of the story-telling. A good place to learn more is www.godlyplay.com.

Godly DialogueGrades Two Through SixBuilding on the philosophy of Godly Play, Godly Dialogue allows children to build an awareness of God’s presence by actively engaging with the stories of our Faith. Each weekly session is focused on dialogue and discussion about the class topics and stories, allowing the children to explore the ways they are relevant in their own lives. Each year has a special focus:2nd grade: The Eucharist (Communion)3rd grade: The Old Testament4th grade: The New Testament5th grade: Church History6th grade: World ReligionsConfirmation classes begin in 7th grade.

Hark How the Bells...

Calling all Campanologists!A campanologist is a fancy word for bellringer, and back in the day, they rang the big tower bells used to call people to worship or to announce a special event such as a wedding or funeral. However, the tower presented less than desirable conditions for practice when temperatures rose or fell, and neighbors were not so keen on the noisy rehearsals. A solution was created in 1660, when the Cor brothers of the Wiltshire Foundry (England) cast the first set of practice hand bells. Eventually these were tuned – and the art of English handbell ringing was born!

Since Christ Church Bronxville is without a carillon, we thought it would be fun to start a Bell Band. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to ring, but felt it too hard. Here’s your chance to learn basic ringing techniques, be part of a band without sheet music, and take part in a short-term exercise guaranteed to improve brain function! All that’s needed is the ability to count and to ring one or more bells for several minutes. Our goal is to learn at least one change and perform it some Sunday before worship – and of course, have fun!

Any number may participate – and if you are unable at this time, you may try a later session. Given the bells’ overtones, 25 minutes of rehearsal may well be all that our ears can handle. So in Session 1, practices will be held on Monday evenings at either 6:30-6:55 or 8:05-8:30 p.m., pending the preference of participants. Afterwards, we can change the time as necessary.

Please contact Debbie Cook (202.7548 or [email protected]) with questions or if interested in joining the Bell Band so a rehearsal time and starting date can be chosen. -Debbie Cook

Thank you!

A new season of ringing has arrived! This year’s music will involve a wide range of repertoire, including varied techniques, playing with the organ and other solo instruments, familiar melodies and new ones, different levels of difficulty, chimes with bells, and more!

Rehearsals are Mondays, 7-8 p.m. in the Undercroft, and will begin on September 13. If interested, but you can’t make the first week, come on the 20th. Reading music is

not a must; being able to count is – and in case you’re wondering, the pieces look just like piano music.

Since the Handbell Choir rings several times during the year, you may participate for a short term (such as Palm Sunday) or for the long haul. Monday nights are busy and fun! For more information about ringing or if you would like to join, please contact Debbie Cook, director (202.7548 or [email protected]) so we are prepared for your arrival.-Debbie Cook

Outreach CornerHow to Celebrate an

AnniversaryThere are many ways to celebrate your 32nd wedding anniversary. A romantic dinner in a trendy restaurant, a Broadway show, a big bash with your friends and family, or better yet, a vacation in an exotic destination. Well none of the above!I was taken aback when I heard how Kevin and Debbie Cook had planned to celebrate theirs this past July 15th. Here’s a description of the program: an evening in Manhattan, chauffeured, with curbside gourmet dining and street entertainers. It sounded very posh and exciting. However if you read between the lines a different story will appear – the glitzy night was none other than a Midnight Run expedition. In fact the Cooks decided to join a group of fellow Christ Church parishioners on a rattling van to bring food, clothing and fellowship to the less fortunate guys on the streets of New York. The rest of the group included Margaret & Tom Roth, Barbara & Wink McKinnon, and Carol & PG Costa. So we all left and shared pasta salad, sandwiches and lemonade with our homeless friends, listening to their points of view on the latest world events. Kevin and Debbie’s decision made that evening quite inspiring for me. Too many times I tend to lose sight of what really matters, preferring to focus on my self; and I’m thankful for the reminder of what my

priorities should be.

Back home, in CCB’s kitchen, cake and champagne concluded the celebration of an anniversary that Debbie described as “one of the best ever”.

Building CommunityGreetings from Otovalo, Ecuador! Our group finished four nights in the indigenous community, Agato. We spent three full days painting their most important structure, the community house, a place where all citizens of Agato are welcome to congregate, play, sleep, learn, create and otherwise enjoy themselves. When we visited the Otovalo market on Saturday, the largest indigenous market in South America, everybody was excited by the wide array of crafts, clothing and livestock on display. When we returned that evening, after we had donated a considerable amount of support to the local indigenous artisans, one of the elders of Agato killed and roasted the guinea pig. Everybody joined in games or conversation with the local children daily. We tried to teach the children some English, as well as communicate with them in Spanish, which is the second language of the Agato people, the first being their native Kichwa. When all was said and done, the community center was bright yellow with burnt-orange trim. The soccer field was fifteen bags of trash cleaner, and the local kids were all very attached to each of us, as we were to them. On the final day, we celebrated by going on a hike up the neighboring mountains, visiting llamas, and ending the night in a traditional dancing circle with our hosts and acquaintances. -Chris Behrens

Trip to JBFC Orphanage in KisikumaOn July 1st, eight of us journeyed on a trip to the JBFC Orphanage in Kisikuma Tanzania that left us with indescribable and unforgettable memories. Although traveling there was not easy, and the jetlag was even worse, we were immediately greeted by smiling and singing girls that made us forget about the difficulties in getting there. The morning after we arrived was Sunday, which meant that the entire village, along with the JBFC girls, gathered under a tarp (held up by tall sticks) to perform their weekly church service. Even though it was in Swahili, the experience was unimaginable. Their beautiful voices and breathtaking dance moves left us all in awe. For the next 14 days, we loved those girls more than we could have ever dreamed possible. We worked hard to paint a new dormitory that would allow 16 underprivileged girls to come to the orphanage. Although it was not finished during the time that we were there, we know that some new girls (who are in desperate need of a new home and better family life) will get to live there because of what we did. If you couldn’t find us painting the new dorm then you would most likely have seen us playing soccer or volleyball with the girls, or holding and playing with them and making them laugh. In addition, we often had the chance to lead a class (that didn’t have a teacher that day), teaching simple English, the ABC’s and bringing smiles to the JBFC girls and village students.- Taylor Reynolds

Because Inquiring Minds Just Want to Know . . . Are you a newcomer to the Episcopal Church and find yourself wanting to know more? Have you been worshipping at Christ Church for several months (or years) and would like to be baptized, received or confirmed? Are you a “cradle Episcopalian” interested in deepening your knowledge or catching up on how and why things have changed? If you find yourself in any of these categories, or simply identify your self as an “inquirer at large,” this first offering of our Sunday “Short Series” is for you! Mark your calendars now for the following five Sundays: October 17, October 24, October 31, November 7, and November 14. We will meet in the Crispell Lounge following the 10 AM Eucharist and explore, together, many of the rich traditions of the Episcopal Church—its understanding of the Bible, its history and spirituality, its mission and worship. Our text for the series will be Your Faith or Your Life: An Introduction to the Episcopal Church, which can be purchased from an online vendor or ordered at our local bookstore. For more information contact The Rev. Amy Lamborn at 914-337-3544 or [email protected].

All are welcome, Christ Church members and non-members alike.

EYCEpiscopal Youth CommunityFor All Current High School StudentsRegular Meetings: Monday Nights 7:30-8:30PM in Taylor HallPlease contact Director of Youth Ministry Krista Dias ([email protected]) for more information.

The Truth of Christianity is not accessible to us without practice. At Christ Church, high school students have the privilege of joining the EYC, the Episcopal Youth Community. The purpose of the EYC is to engage in the practice of Christianity through a fellowship of love, through reflection on Spirit and Truth, and through action in

service to our neighbors, both in our community and the world. The EYC takes very seriously the Christian formation of its members. One powerful way we practice this is by traveling together in pilgrimage and in service. Twice a year the group spends time together in active Christian mission: for a week of prayer at the Taizé monastery and a building project either domestically or abroad.

Upcoming Events – Save the Date!September 13th – First Monday Night MeetingSeptember 24th - Midnight Run, 7:45PMThe teens will meet in the church kitchen to prepare food, clothing and toiletries, then deliver the items to Manhattan’s homeless population. After dinner we will participate in a Taizé evensong service. It will be a wonderful time for the teens to remember Taizé, and for parents to experience something of what Taizé is all about. February 18th - 27th - Pilgrimage to the Taizé MonasteryRegistration and non-refundable $500 deposit due November 1st

Krista Dias Heads to The General Theological SeminaryAs many of you know, Director of Youth Ministry Krista Dias has been in the process of becoming an Episcopal Priest for the last couple of years. After several interviews, psychological evaluations and written reflections, Bishop Sisk made Krista a postulant in May. That means she will be sponsored for ordination in the Diocese of New York and has permission to attend seminary. This fall Krista will begin her three year Master of Divinity program at The General Theological Seminary in Manhattan. She is excited to begin seminary and is very happy that General’s close proximity will allow her to continue working with the youth group. Please know that she will not be around as much on Sundays. She will be busy experiencing services at other churches. Krista will, however, always have her blackberry handy and should be easy to contact if you need to chat.

Choir RegistrationWe’re making a final push before the year begins to boost registration and number of choristers in our choirs. The hopes and expectations for all Christ Church choristers are realized within the structure of five separate choirs. These five choirs function independently toward a common goal: community and service. With the new organ complete, the stage is now set for choirs at Christ Church to grow and flourish into an extraordinary expression of our Christianity.Register online at http://www.ccbny.org/?page_id=364 or contact Christopher Wells ([email protected] or 914-337-3544 x116)

Christ Church Bronxville will host a four-day midwinter conference of the Association of Anglican Musicians in January. Many attendees have already registered and come from as far away as Tennessee and Idaho. The list of presenters is impressive: The Right Reverend David Stancliffe (Bishop of Salisbury), Dr. John Harper (Bangor University and former RSCM president), Dr. Allan Doig (Bangor University, expert in church art and architecture), and along with many others – our very own Fr. Cody Unterseher. The title of the conference, “American Sarum”, will coincide with the publication of Fr. Unterseher’s book of the same title (The Liturgy of Christ Church, Bronxville, New York, Within the History of Anglican Worship).

Clergy and Musicians will gather at Christ Church to explore our English roots and dare to redefine Anglican Worship. So what is the role of the parish at this conference? On Sunday January 16, 2011 come to church and pray and sing your best at 10AM! That’s it!Of course there will be much more that you might want to attend: a Choral Concert by The Trinity Choir (Trinity Church, Wall Street), Evensong in the presence of multiple bishops, and lectures on everything and anything Sarum.More information to come. Anyone interested right now should visit http://www.AmericanSarum.info

Sunday September 12th, 6 PM Wine and Cheese Party for EYC parents at the home of Mary and Christopher Behrens

This year, the Episcopal Youth Community will begin with a very special kick-off retreat for teens lead by special guest youth minister Andy Braner on September 11th and 12th. There will also be a wine and cheese party for parents to meet and hear Mr. Braner speak about the issues our teens are facing today. Andy Braner is the founder of Camp Kivu in Durango, Colorado.

Camp Kivu is a place for teens to spend the summer deepening their faith through activities such as rock climbing, biking, swimming and fellowship. They also lead mission trips for teens both domestically and abroad.

Mr. Braner will work with our teens Saturday September 11th from 4-9PM at the home of Mary and Chris Behrens. Together, they will work on building Christian community and reflect on the role faith plays in their lives. Of course there will also be plenty of time for swimming, food and catching up with friends.

On Sunday the 12th of September at 6PM, parents of teens in the EYC are invited to the Behrens home for a wine and cheese reception. At the reception, Mr. Braner will talk with parents about raising faithful teens and current trends in adolescent behavior. We’ll also take some time to share a bit about the upcoming EYC year.

It is a great honor for us to have Mr. Braner work with our EYC teens and parents. He has devoted his life to youth ministry and we feel confident that we will all learn something quite valuable from him. Special thanks to the Kraemer and Behrens families for organizing this wonderful experience for the EYC at Christ Church Bronxville! If your family is able to participate in the Kick-Off retreat and/or the wine and cheese party, please RSVP to me no later than Sunday September 5th.

ABOUT TAIZÉA “parable of community”Today, the Taizé Community is made up of over a hundred brothers, Catholics and from various Protestant backgrounds, coming from around thirty nations. By its very existence, the community is a “parable of community” that wants its life to be a sign of reconciliation between divided Christians and between separated peoples.

The brothers of the community live solely by their work. They do not accept donations. In the same way, they do not accept personal inheritances for themselves; the community gives them to the very poor.

Certain brothers live in some of the disadvantaged places in the world, to be witnesses of peace there, alongside people who are suffering. These small groups of brothers, in Asia, Africa and South America, share the living conditions of the people around them. They strive to be a presence of love among the very poor, street children, prisoners, the dying, and those who are wounded by broken relationships, or who have been abandoned.

Over the years, young adults have been coming to Taizé in ever greater numbers; they come from every continent to take part in weekly meetings. Sisters of Saint Andrew, an international Catholic community founded seven centuries ago, Polish Ursuline Sisters and Sisters of St Vincent de Paul take on some of the tasks involved in welcoming the young people.

Church leaders also come to Taizé. The community has thus welcomed Pope John Paul II, four Archbishops of Canterbury, Orthodox metropolitans, the fourteen Lutheran bishops of Sweden, and countless pastors from all over the world.

From 1962 on, brothers and young people sent by Taizé went back and forth continually to the countries of Eastern Europe, with great discretion, to visit those who were confined within their frontiers.
