Pastor’s Column:

Thank You! The end of our church program year seems a good time to offer thanks for the “energy, intelligence, imagination, and love” that so many of you offer so faithfully in service to God through Magnolia Presbyterian Church. We think particularly at this time of year of our devoted choir members and volunteer Sunday School teachers, who are now taking a well-deserved summer break. Others of you contribute to our congregation’s life by participating in Bible studies and organizing fellowship events, by counting our weekly offering, hosting coffee hour, and working on our church newsletter, by tidying our sanctuary between Sundays, serving on our boards, and welcoming visitors, by befriending our children and youth, praying faithfully for our church leaders, and caring for our building and grounds. We have church members busily serving outside our congregation too, with Operation NightWatch and Tent City 5, Queen Anne Helpline and Ballard Food Bank. You have found so many different ways to serve. A thousand thanks! It is a great privilege to serve alongside you! Grace and peace, Pastor Deb

Thanking Lori Sawyer A special coffee hour on June 5th honored Lori Sawyer for her five years as our Children’s Ministry Director. Parents and Session members shared words of thanks, along with gifts, and many of the youngest members of our church family shared big hugs with Lori as we sent her on her way to Spokane with our love.

Retirement Celebration for John Obourn Music Director John Obourn retired from his position on Sunday, June 12th after an amazing 35-year career here at MPC. John’s ministry was celebrated with special music during worship, and gifts were presented from the choir and the Session at his retirement party during coffee hour. We were glad to have a chance to thank John for the tremendous talent and dedication he has shared with our church family over the years, and we appreciated the beautiful words he shared with us in return.

Justin Beatty Ordination May 22nd!

What a joy it was to celebrate with Justin’s family and friends, and representatives from other churches in our presbytery, at his ordination service on Sunday, May 22nd. Justin is now our Associate Pastor for Youth.

Andrey Spichak is New Music Director The MPC Session is pleased to announce that our new Music Director is Mr. Andrey Spichak. Andrey was introduced to the congregation during worship on Sunday, June 26th.

Andrey brings a unique combination of experiences in church music to our congregation.

As music director of St. John’s Episcopal Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Andrey developed music programs for children as well as adults. Before coming to this country in 1999, Andrey was Music Director in his Russian Orthodox Church in Molodechno, the Republic of Belarus.

For the past 12 years Andrey has been the choir director, music and piano teacher at Eastlake High School in Sammamish.

“I’m looking forward to continuing the music tradition of this church by developing worship music to enhance Sunday services,” Andrey says. “If you have music talent to share, please let me know!”

Liina-Ly Beatty Named Interim Children's Ministry Director While our search for a new permanent Children's Ministry Director continues, the Session and Personnel Team are pleased to report that Liina-Ly Beatty will be our Interim Children's Ministry Director this summer. Many of you already know Liina-Ly, who has been assisting her husband Justin with our youth classes over the last two years. She is a PhD student in Scandinavian Studies at the University of Washington and just completed her doctoral exams. Her study is on literature and film with a focus on the contemporary literature and cinema in Scandinavian and Baltic countries. Liina-Ly will be writing her dissertation on ‘Images of Child in North and East European Imagination: Memories of War and Crisis of Everyday’. During her studies at the University of Washington Liina-Ly has been teaching classes in Estonian and Swedish. Welcome Liina-Ly to the MPC Ministry Team as she spends time with our children over the next few months.

FROM DESK OF LIINA-LY BEATTY: Hi All! This is Liina-Ly Beatty, your Interim Children's Director! This summer, all kids age 4 and up are welcome to the BLAST class with me. I am really excited to work with them! We will be revisiting the HolyMoly! curriculum (along with the videos that, I hear, have been very popular among the kids). The CONNECT kids are welcome to come and be helpers, if they would like to do that.

— Liina-Ly

Welcome New Member Kurt Owen The Owen family and our whole church family celebrated with Kurt Owen on Sunday, May 22nd as Kurt was baptized and joined the church. Pastor Deb Sunoo baptized Kurt, and his daughter Zaidee, son Finley, and wife Mona all participated in the service. It’s a pleasure to welcome Kurt into membership at MPC!

Did You Know…

The money we give in the collection plate goes toward keeping the church open all summer.

Here’s what that means: When you go on your fabulous vacation to Hawaii this summer, or staycation in your backyard with a cooler and no ambition to leave your sticky lawn chair, the church still has the money to do everything it needs to keep the lights on, even when you’re not here.

But what does that really mean? It means that even if you’re not here every Sunday throughout the summer, there is an easy way to make sure your generous contributions keep the church running while you’re away. Simply give more while you are here, to make up for when you are not, or automate your giving with a weekly or monthly recurring donation through your bank or through PayPal.

How can we help? Commit to our community. You built it; let’s keep it going. It’s easy! Put cash in the offering plate – like a good amount! Write a check – if you carry them with you Auto-withdrawal from your bank account – like your cable bill Donate online – through PayPal – what’s easier?

Remember, each week is your opportunity to support us all, even when you can’t be with us in person!

Wikstroms to Host Supper Club Annè and Brom Wikstrom will host Supper Club at their home (2715 West Lynn Place) sometime this summer. Originally they were hosting the June Supper Club, but had to postpone. Stay tuned for the new date and info later this summer.
