MINUTES 2018 INTERNATIONAL RALLY, COLUMBIA FALLS, MONTANA! Meeting was called to order at 3:00 pm, at Glacier Peaks RV Resort, Columbia Falls, Montana,

Present: Kevin Besel - International Rep (Washington State Rep) Tom Nowell - California State Rep Ben Altman - Oregon State Rep Zach Hoffman - Southern Oregon Rep Dick Burnam - Idaho State Rep (Representing Lonnie Holloway) Anne O’Dell - Representing Alberta Canada George Penner - Omak Washington Area Rep Irene Baines - Seattle Washington Rep and Secretary writing the minutes Thanks Richard Dunning - Idaho Area Rep Billie Leonard & Charlie Crane - Spokane Washington Area Reps Richard Hentz - Former Washington State Rep Joy Lindholm - Past International Rep Gary Shearer - Former International Rep Dan Magee - Representing Medicine Hat (Prior International Rep) I apologize if I missed anyone at this meeting.

Kevin apologized to the group that he had forgotten the minutes from Myers Flat. All he knew for sure was that he was voted in as International Rep. Kevin said that he would post the minutes along with this meeting’s minutes!

“Note for next year on the German Flag, Black is on top, pointed out by Joy Lindholm. Will correct for sure and thank you Joy” Kevin asked for State and Provincial Rep reports. Dick Burnam said Idaho is financially sound and they can have as many as 45 to 70 members at their breakfast meeting and they have gained 5 to 7 new members this past year. There were 39 from Idaho attending the Rally. Great showing from Idaho as always.

Dick said that it is the same old problem. A lot of attendees at the meeting, not so many riders. The big thing he said is, that they can’t find anyone to step up to take the helm from the leaders, Lonnie, Richard and Dick are getting tired. He was not sure what the answer was at this point.

Tom Nowell reported that California is hanging on. They had no new members but the members they do have seem to be happy the way things are going, and they too are financially sound. Ben Altman said that membership is strong in Oregon, 145 members strong, participation in the breakfast meetings, but few riders. Same problem that we all are facing, no one wants to step up and take a leadership role. Ben said there were 33 from Oregon attending the rally. Great job Ben! Kevin Reported for Washington State and he said that we are not growing very much, but we did sign up a member at this International. Kevin thanked Billie, Charlie Crane and John for holding the Spo-kane area together. They do have some pretty solid riders in the group and have group rides all the time. Richard Hentz is back in the area now and said that he is still involved and will try to participate more once he is settled. Kevin said there were 23 attending the rally from Washington. George Penner reported that the Okanagan group was doing ok, not too many new members but working on it; getting some interest. Irene Blanes reported that the Seattle area is doing well, there are sometimes as high as 20 at the breakfast. She bakes cookies and that seems to get them to the meetings. Someone quipped, that is one tactic I have not tried, but they probably wouldn’t like my cookies.

Annie O’Dell reported that the Alberta group is getting smaller, and since she has moved, there aren’t very many that ride. She is trying to get them back together but it is hard, but she said there is still a lot of riding in her area, always some event to go to. She mentioned that Linda who took over the Saskatchewan Area, is attending to her dad who is ill, so she is struggling to keep things going. Dan Magee reported that he was stepping down from Medicine Hat leadership but felt he had a young man that would do a good job in leading the club, with his Guidance. Again, same problem, no one wants to volunteer. He said his group was financially sound. Kevin thanked everyone for their input and was glad to hear that all groups were still hanging in and trying to grow the club. Kevin brought up the results of the survey regarding rescinding the over 40 membership requirement. The survey came out to almost a 50/50, so Kevin concluded it was too close to change at this time.

Gary Shearer suggested that we take the over 40 out of the application and that would at least give us a chance to make them an associate member if not 40. Kevin made a motion to take the over 40 off of our application for membership. Motion seconded by Ben Altman, all were in favor. Motion made, seconded and carried.

Since the International was held in Montana, we have moved out of our normal rotation. We dis-cussed where our 2019 international should be held. It was suggested by Anne, that it be held in Sas-katchewan, but she didn’t felt there wasn’t sufficient time to prepare for 2019, so moved to 2020 for Canada. Zach said, not 2019, but later he would be willing to host the event at John Day, Oregon. Kevin said that he had heard a lot of comments on having it in Montana again. Everyone really enjoyed it. Kevin said that he was willing to do the 2019 International in Montana, at the same location. That would be a first time the International was held at the same location two consecutive years. A motion was made by Kevin to hold 2019 International in Montana again, then Canada (if Anne agreed for 2020). Ben Altman seconded the motion, all in favor. Motion seconded and carried. Official times for the 2019 International are July 15th thru the 18th 2019. Kevin asked all reps to get rally and ride times in quickly, he would like to have them set up and finalized by end of February! The purpose of that is so all members can plan out the summer on which events to participate rides to go on. Kevin said this would prevent overlap of events and get better participation at rides and ral-lies. Richard Dunning mentioned that he would like to see all of the sites better maintained and up to date. He mentioned it is detrimental to the club if someone clicks on a site that is not maintained or has old news. He said he did realize not everyone has a person set to maintain their website but thought it was very important that we keep them fresh and up to date. Kevin asked that all members send him suggestions and ideas on how make UMCI interesting and attractive to our old members as well as drawing in some new people. Please send your suggestions to Kevin at [email protected]. New and outside the box ideas are welcome. At the end of the meeting Daniel Magee said he would be around and was more than happy to help where needed. Kevin thanked Daniel for all he and his wife have done for UMCI and the Medicine Hat Club. Daniel and Stephanie were a big part of the success of the 2018 International Rally. Kevin pointed out he was a little disappointed that he did not see more vests with our patch on it. It is hard to attract members if they don’t know who we are. “Please, wear your patch, it will attract new riders. Kevin thanked everyone for coming and for their hard work and dedication to keeping the UMCI a great club. Meeting was adjourned at 4:15 P.M.

Thanks to all Kevin

Thank you Irene Blanes for taking the minutes.

August 2018 Metro South (Milwaukie & Ore-gon City) News – Ben Altman

July 28th: Elmer’s Portland – We had only five attending this morning, with four bikes in the lot! There were five of us this morning, with three bikes! Aug 4: It was a nice morning for the ride to Wich-ita Grill for the Oregon City Breakfast. We had 9 attending with 2 bikes in the lot. From the Grill, CZ and I rode down to Taylor Honda to check on CZ’s ghost Wing (2018), that no one has seen. So, as the official club rep. I fig-ured it was my responsibility to confirm the reality of the new purchase. I can officially say, I saw a new White 2018 1800, and Dave Taylor, sales-man, did not deny that it was in fact CZ’s bike, still waiting for a part. From Taylor’s we wondered toward down to Sil-verton, where we got caught in a parade, and sent on an unexpected detour around downtown. With the detour, we altered course and headed towards Silver Creek Falls, then to Mehama, Lyons and down to Scio, where we had a good lunch a little local café. After lunch we headed back home through Silverton and Mt. Angle. It was a very nice ride, with temps 71-81 degrees. Aug 11: This morning was a much cooler 64 de-grees, and cloudy, with threat of showers. There was only 1 bike among us, and that was Gary Shearer, who rode up from Salem. I elected to drive the truck this morning, as after breakfast I was heading to Gresham to hook-up with two of my “old” high school buds. It was a very long but good afternoon with the guys, didn’t get home ‘til midnight.

7

With the late night out, I elected to not participate in the North Coast Diner Ride, but CZ rode his new Wing )2018 1800) over, which had had picked up from Taylor’s Saturday. Aug 18: Well, after several weeks in a row for UMCI activities, I took a break this weekend. I spent the weekend over on the east side of the mountain, visiting Phil Spor, and also checking out some properties… Aug 25: Next Up – Elmer’s … South Region Dear Friends: Traveled several miles sense my last update.

Well 4 of us met Springfield on the 14th of July, to Journey to Montana, for UMCI International Ral-ly. Oh, as we were entering Redmond, Oregon, deer crossed right in front of me and actually kicked my Trike as I passed, way to close. Bill Nelson, Scott Piercey, Don Evernden, and myself made it to Ukiah-Dale State Park that afternoon to camp for the night.

The next morning we left headed for LaGrand. We saw deer and several elk standing in the road. We opted to let them cross and not say anything about roads are for vehicles not animals. Don and I were on that road a few years back and saw a motorcy-cle all bent up and the rider down following an accident near Ukiah.

The ride up LaGrand for breakfast was beautiful. We traveled through some beautiful country up to Enterprise. We went north on Hwy 3 over Rattle-snake. It don't get much better than that.

We took Hwy 12 at Clarkston and road over Lolo Pass and stayed at Lolo Hot Springs RV Park. The road was pretty rough, but such a magnificent and scenic road.

The next Morning we rode the final Leg. After breakfast in Lolo Mt., we rode north and went up east side of Flathead Lake. Big Long Lake very long lake. We reach West Glacier and ate lunch, then went the last few miles to the RV Park and RALLY.

What a great rally and campout. Thanks to Kevin and Kevi, George and Willie, Dan and Stephie and the many other people who made the great rally happen.

Thanks to the people who run the RV park who did a fantastic job of keeping the park so clean and well maintained.

On Tuesday Bill, Don Scott and I visited Glacier, so awesome, so majestic, so photogenic. Saw Big Horn Sheep near Logan Lodge and Black Bear by St Mary's Lake and a Grizzly Bear by East Glaci-er.

What a RIDE!

The Ride Home was uneventful, but fun.

We had our meeting last Sunday 13 Showed up Winners were Jeri Carson, Gregg Weber, me. It was way past time cause I hadn't won 50/50 sense the International Rally.

Sunday afternoon, we celebrated Virgil Williams life in Fairview Oregon at the Fire Station which he was so involved with for with for 28 years. Over a 100 friends came to commemorate his LIFE.

Virgil and Carol lead to Coos Bay Chapter years. They put on the campout at Myrtle Point for sever-al years, Their son, Chris and his wife Eva, have taken over for them for the last few Years.

Virgil was a special person. He was always there to help. He was inventive thought outside the box. He could fix anything. When Darrel and Cathy had problems with their Wing, at the campout, Virgil was there helping, doing what ever he could to assist from morning to night. It was great to watch 2 master craftsmen's working together.

I'm sad that they are gone but I'm so much richer for knowing them. Rest in PEACE MY FRIENDS.

GOD BLESS AND GOD SPEED

Zack Hoffman
