Its like naming someone after they are fully grown, have an enviable reputation and a place in the community. But we had good reason, the best, really, because we wanted to name it after its own daddy, Tim Bradford. We wanted to name it after the man who gave it birth, arranged every single show, we calculate 120 in a row. Arranging a show means finding an artist, getting their work into the parish hall, mounting a ladder to hang each painting in the best possible place, getting the publicity together, and the refreshments, and when its all over, helping clean up. Then start over again. We want to say thank you in a way that would last. We want to say it for ourselves and for the hundreds of people who have visited our gallery for the first time, maybe their first time to St. Francis. And for the scores of artists already scheduled for a show. So thanks, Tim, and welcome to the Bradford Gallery. THE SACRED DRAMA OF LENT We have a treat headed our way. The Rev. Chris Carlin has developed a special class for us that explores the special events and liturgies of the Lenten season. These are bathed in long tradition, covered in passion, and they take us into the most holy of our services. Services like Ash Wednesday, Passover, Baptism, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. THE BRADFORD GALLERY After twelve years, the St. Francis art gallery has a name. It’s like naming someone after they are fully grown, have an enviable reputation and a place in the community. But we had good reason, the best, really, because we wanted to name it after it’s own daddy, Tim Bradford. We wanted to name it after the man who gave it birth, arranged every single show, we calculate 120 in a row. Arranging a show means finding an artist, getting their work into the parish hall, mounting a ladder to hang each painting in the best possible place, getting the publicity together, and the refreshments, and when it‘s all over, helping clean up.

Each Wednesday evening service will begin with dinner at 5 pm. The class will follow.

SOMEBODY SHOULD…..

“let all our people learn to devote themselves to doing good, so as to meet the most pressing needs, and that their lives may not be unfruitful.” -Titus 3:14

Do you sometimes think about St. Francis By The Sea, “Somebody should…”? with that thought finished many different ways. “Clean out the refrigerator; pick up that yard debris and dispose of it; organize the coat closet; go speak to those people who just walked in and look lost; send cards to all the visitors each week; sit with that older man who sits alone every week; buy some better lighters for the candles; let Father Everett know his robe is crooked before the processional…; Yes, somebody should and often you should be the somebody. I personally think every member of our parish should volunteer to serve on the vestry at least one term. I am in my last year of my second term and I assure you, I have gained way more from serving that you have gained by having me. Perhaps the most valuable thing I have gained is the knowledge of all that goes on behind the scenes to keep this “business” running. I’ve learned that usually when I think “Somebody should…” somebody is already working on that. I’ve learned who oversees what so when I have an idea, suggestion or even a criticism, I know the proper person to speak to. I’ve also learned that there are people in our parish who are doing the work of many “somebodies” and that there’s work for each of us to do and then some. Remember, this is God’s work and you are his hands, voice and feet. Be SOMEBODY! Ted Goetzinger

ST. FRANCIS ART GALLERY In the Gallery this month we will be enjoying the work of Laura Overman of New Bern.

Of her work she states; “As a landscape and nature photographer I have always been interested in

capturing breathtaking and beautiful moments in time. A camera has been my constant companion for as long as I can remember. And I find great joy in being able to share this love of photography through Instagram and Facebook as well as printing on metal and canvas. In Eastern North Carolina we are

surrounded by endless beauty…just waiting for us to See. Enjoy!” The Opening will be Friday, February 14 from 6:00-7:00pm, followed by a St. Clare Concert.

ST. CLARE COFFEEHOUSE AND WINTER CONCERT Aaron Burdett is listed as one of the top 10 most important musicians of western North Carolina by WNC Magazine, alongside such greats as Doc Watson, and The Avett Brothers. His lyrics are soul-touching, intelligent, witty, and poetic all at once, while his music style is a seamless blend of Americana, country, blues, bluegrass, and folk-rock that cohesively creates a story.

Aaron grew up the oldest of three boys in the small town in Saluda, NC, where the Blue Ridge meets the Smoky Mountains.

When Aaron was about 10 years old he was introduced to the music of Cat Stevens, the first of many musical influences that include the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin and Doc Watson. In 1992 Aaron went to the renowned Governor’s School of North Carolina for choral music. In his 20s, he played extensively in Boone, NC and owned a music store that sold instruments and offered lessons. His sense of adventure took him across the country working on various types of farms and ranches. While many mainstream country singers pay lip-service to the blue-collar working world, Aaron’s songs come from his life experiences. Aaron has moved back to his hometown and started a construction business, built a home for himself and his wife, and started a family, all while continuing to write songs and playing music, recording an album every year or two. In 2013, Aaron decided to pursue music in earnest, so fast forward to 2019, and his distinctive clear voice has carried his dream into a successful career. Aaron’s songs and 7 albums effortlessly transition from solo performance to full band, with equal emotional impact on audiences.

SFbtS CONCERT SERIES The Carteret Arts Forum is proud to present a performance by Jack Gibbons on Friday February 21st at Saint Francis by the Sea in Salter Path at 7:00 pm with a reception following. He also is known for his performances of Chopin, Bach, Alkan, Schubert and others. He has frequently played for Queen Elizabeth and all around the world including his 32nd Annual Oxford Summer Piano Series at Oxford, England this past year. This virtuoso performer is also known for his own compositions.

HOPE MISSION On Saturday, January 11, St Francis volunteers cooked and served a delicious hot lunch to folks at Hope Mission. Over 100 people enjoyed Jesse’s world-famous meatloaf, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, salad, rolls and the most delicious desserts! St Francis volunteers also gave away 223 lovingly homemade & store bought winter warmth items. The folks at Hope Mission excitedly gathered around the space we set up for the hats, gloves, scarves, socks & coats as our volunteers helped them pick out exactly what they needed. The lunch and our winter warmth items were a tremendous hit! Thanks to everyone who helped. If you were unable to participate this month, we will be cooking and serving again on Saturday, April 4. HOPE MISSION EVENING MEAL On Sunday, February 16, St Francis will be providing an evening meal to the Hope Mission Shelter guests. We will sit and share the meal family-style with the shelter guests. Robin and Terry Smith will be cooking baked spaghetti and garlic bread for this meal. We are asking someone to provide a salad, iced tea, and dessert to feed about 20 or so people. We will be serving a meal to 12 men plus we would like at least 4 parishioners to join with us to help with food and share the meal. Food is to be cooked in advance and transported to Hope Mission on the evening of the meal. We are to arrive at 5:30 to set up for dinner which is to be served at 6 PM sharp. We will need to leave no later than 7 PM as this facility is “home” to the men and they have an evening schedule that must be strictly adhered to. We will be hosting this evening meal quarterly at Hope Mission. For each of these meals we will only need 4 volunteers. So that we don’t have too many people signing up, please contact Robin and Terry Smith to let them know that you would like to participate and what you will be bringing. Our second scheduled meal will be on Sunday, May 17. Robin and Terry Smith are leading this.

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING On Super Bowl Sunday in 1990, a simple prayer inspired a youth group to create a fun, yet meaningful

way to fight hunger and reach out to those in need. Using originality and teamwork, the young people invited their friends at twenty-one other churches to join them in collecting donations in soup pots. Souper Bowl of

Caring brings people together to help those in need across the country, while transforming the time around the Super Bowl into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving. St Francis parishioners donated non-perishable food items as part of our annual Souper Bowl of Caring food drive to benefit Hope Mission. On Sunday, February 9 we will be serving a variety of delicious, hot soups during coffee hour and are asking for monetary donations to be placed in the soup pot on the food table or in the football helmets that will be passed. 100% of the non-perishable food and money will go directly to Hope Mission soup kitchen.

ANGEL TREE FAMILY DISPLACED BY FIRE One of the families that we helped for Christmas had a house fire right before Christmas. Everything was a total loss. There was no insurance. The mother works at the hospital as a CNA. She has 4 children and her elderly mother lives with her. The children were not home at the time, and no one was injured. That is a blessing. St Francis partnered with Carteret Pre-Kindergarten and several other organizations in Morehead City to help this family. St Francis parishioners stepped-up and donated furniture, a multitude of home goods, food, kitchen needs, a tv, and over $2000 which will be used to help with rent and deposit for their new home. Patty Gares did a fantastic job coordinating our donations and acting as liaison between St Francis and Carteret Pre-K. Thank you to everyone who helped this family with donations and prayers, and thank you Patty!

CARTERET PRE-KINDERGARTEN VISIT A few parishioners visited Landon at school (Carteret County Pre-K). Landon was one of the “angels” on our Angel Tree this year. You may remember the story of Landon, the 4-year old boy who lives in a shed in the county. We brought Landon a bag of healthy snacks and apple juice so that he can have a healthy breakfast and snacks at the school. He frequently arrives at school hungry and dirty. Teachers at the school clean him up and wash his clothes and feed him. On our visit we got to play with Landon during his class recess. He was excited to show us some new tricks he has learned: a cartwheel, somersault, and “spinning” around in a circle, and bouncing a ball. We are working with Carteret Pre-K to help him on a regular basis.

ECW NEWS

SFBTS ECW is grateful to Church of the Nativity in Raleigh for sharing the

resources below that will help us move toward becoming a Zero Waste church.

In this Year of Personal Action, we can all take steps at home to help protect

our environment. Below is the emphasis for February - Moving to a Plant

Rich Diet. How many of these action items will you try? See zerowastechurch.org for more

information and links to resources.

”Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth

that bear fruit with the seed and it. And it was so.” Genesis 1: 11

Let’s ACT together this year to restore the fullness of God’s earth.

Cows produce the harmful greenhouse gas methane, and the food we feed them could be feeding hungry

humans. Using sustainable agriculture methods to grow our fruits and vegetables can actually help

increase the carbon and nutrients in the soil and pull excess carbon out of the atmosphere. People who eat a plant rich/low meat diet reduce their risks of certain cancers, heart disease and have lower

morbidity and healthcare costs. Week 1

~Try a vegetable you haven’t tried before. ~Try a new plant-based recipe. Week 2

~Visit a vegan restaurant for inspiration. ~Replace meat with seasoned beans, legumes or lentils in a recipe 1 day a week.

Week 3 ~Eat meat only once a week, then once a month.

~Switch from cow’s milk to a plant-based alternative like coconut, soy, or almond milk. Week 4

~Join a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) to receive fresh, seasonal vegetables. ~Transition smoothly from 4 legs, to 2 legs to 0 legs! Bonus action: talk to your doctor or nutritionist about a plant rich diet! This is part of our RESTORING

GOD’S EARTH, A YEAR OF PERSONAL ACTION program; A monthly guide to help individuals learn the
