“O God, be merciful to me, a sinner”
Jesus tells of a Pharisee and a tax collector in the temple to pray. Actually, the Pharisee went to the temple to brag: “O God, I thank you I am not like the rest of humanity . . .” The Pharisee is probably a good man. But he seems to be thanking God that he has no need of God; that he is self-made and self sufficient. The tax collector does not even raise his eyes to heaven. He is aware that he is a sinner and prays for mercy. He acknowledges his dependence on God for all that he has, all that he is and all the he ever will be. He stands present to God with all of his flaws and ask God’s forgiveness for the ways he failed to be all that God created him to be. Both
are stewards of all that God gave them. But it is the tax collector, not the Pharisee, who understands that. It is the tax collector who ask for for-giveness. Good stewards know and admit when they have failed to be a good stew-ard, and ask God for for-giveness. When we stand before God, are we like the Pharisee or are we like the tax collector?

“What the Catholic faith believes about Mary is based on what it believes about Christ, and what it teaches
about Mary illumines in turn its faith in Christ.” ~ Catechism of the Catholic Church #487 ~
There are four dogmas stating Mary’s personal relationship with God and her role in human salvation:
1) Mother of God—Council of Ephesus (431 A.D.) This dogma is actually embedded in the explanation of the person and natures of Jesus Christ (fully God and fully man) and is an integral part of the teachings about Christ. 2) Perpetual Virginity—Council of the Lateran (649 A.D.) The Catholic Church holds as dogma that Mary was and is Virgin before, in, and after Christ’s birth. 3) Immaculate Conception—Apostolic Constitution, Ineffabilis Deus (1854 A.D.) Though highlighting a privilege of Mary, this dogma stresses the dignity and holiness required to become “Mother of God.” The Immaculate Conception is the source and basis for Mary’s all-holiness as Mother of God. 4) The Assumption—Papal Encyclical, Munificentissimus Deus (1950 A.D.) Mary was elevated, or assumed, into heaven by the power and grace of God. This is distinctly different from Christ’s Ascension by His own divine power.
