Immigration & Refugee Task ForceThe Immigration and Refugee Task Force has made progress on preparing for the possibility of providing physical Sanctuary. We are drafting a plan and proposal to present to the Board that includes criteria for accepting a person/family into sanctuary, volunteer coordination and training, andaddresses providing for the physical and financial needs of the person or family. As we work out these important details, we are also keeping our focus on the Torah teachings of the mitzvah of helping the stranger. The relationship between Sanctuary and Jewish values is highlighted inan excellent podcast on Hashivenu: “You Were Strangers in Egypt”.We continue to coordinate with the congregations of the Faith Network for Immigrant and Refugee Support and are very close to signing a mutual support agreement. More information is available on the TBH website and Interfaith Works website. We are planning a work session with the Boardin May and plan to present a proposed Sanctuary Plan to the Board for consideration at their May Board meeting. The Board will follow TBH endorsement policy and solicit congregational input. We hope that this timeline allows Board consideration of a final proposal by the end of June. Our next Task Force meetings are May 1st at 7:00 pm, directly after the Faith Network meeting and May 15th at 6:00 pm. Please join us. We welcome your questions, input and collaboration!

Our Green Team is off and running! We completed an online Hazon audit for TBH that included our energy usage, lighting, waste management, building operations and maintenance. We had a Puget Sound Energy contractor visit to inventory our lights and fixtures. We now have a detailed plan to upgrade lighting to be more energy efficient. This will save us money and pay for itself. PSE heavily subsidizes this program to make it more affordable.

We also did many things to greatly reduce our waste at our recentPassover Seder! Most of the dishware and utensils were reusable and could be washed, packaging was recycled and food waste composted. With over 120 attendees, this made a difference in lessening our environmental impact.

We are continuing to identify ways to be more sustainable and actions to take to decrease our carbon footprint. Our next Green Team meeting is Tuesday, May 8th at 5:30 pm at TBH. We hope to see you there!

FROM CATHERINE CARMEL:FAMILY LIFE AND LEARNING DIRECTOR

As we are approaching the end of another school year, I am normally trying to convince everyone to walk in CROP Walk with me right about now. This year there is no CROP Walk happening in our community.Discussing this at my last meeting with my madrichim (teen teaching

assistants) I was reminded that without it, we are lacking in the tikkun olam focus this spring that we’ve had in the past. I am so fortunate to be able to work with such a remarkable group of madrichim. They understand the importance of living their Judaic values and understand how important it is to teach this value. Next year will do better! I promise!

A child who grows up practicing tikkun olam knows that he or she is working towards increasing the goodness in the world. Our society thrives when good behavior is deliberately cultivated, not just done because it feels good at the time.

HereisanotefromArielAdereth(picturedabove),ourGeza’im(1st&2ndgrade)teacher:

We often spend our winters as introverts, hiding away in our homes and disconnecting from our environment. As signs of Aviv (spring) begin to emerge all around us, we become aware of our surroundings. Birds begin to sing and nest, trees bud, flowers bloom, and our neighborhoods become encompassed with activity. In Hebrew, the word Kehilah means community, a central value in Judaism. In our first two trimesters this year, Torah and Avodah, Ge’zaim spent a lot of time discussing the importance of communities in the Torah, in our own lives, and in the lives of our ancestors.

With the arrival of spring, we move into our final subject, G’milutChasadim (meaning Acts of Loving Kindness), becoming active members of our communities. During our remaining classes, Ge’zaim will discuss issues affecting our communities, as well as communities all around the world, such as bullying, poverty, littering/pollution, and more. We will learn how we can get involved in these issues and make a difference, and on sunny days, we will partake in some of these mitzvot together as a class by helping to clean our neighborhood! Have a wonderful day! - Ariel

The Beit Sefer program is looking for a few committed people to join our paid teaching team beginning in the upcoming school year. Our teachers are responsible for teaching Judaic knowledge, Torah andHebrew language skills to a class of up to ten students. The ideal candidates will be passionate about helping children develop their own Jewish identity within a framework of Reconstructionist Judaism. They should have an ability to create relationships with a variety of students, know how to manage a class and make learning an active and meaningful process. Experience with children in a classroom or camp setting is preferred. For more informationor to apply to join our team, contact Catherine at [email protected].

The belief that feeling good is more important than doing good is too widespread right now. Of course we would be thrilled if everyone always enjoyed doing mitzvot. But while we understand that while it is wonderful to feel charitable, it is far more wonderful to actually be charitable. This wonderful group of teens reminded me that it is up to us to reinforce the love of doing tikkun olam. Here at Beit Sefer, children are rewarded for their generosity bycombining tikkun olam with games and competitions. Reinforcing the behavior establishes thoughts of, 'I have a stake in this. I can be effective. It feels good to do good things.' That kind of social motivation is important. Doing tikkun olam regularly creates a pattern of goodness our children can carry forth into the world with them, CROP Walk or not. I’ll be working on a new plan as you read this. Thank you madrichim!

L’shalom,

I feel grateful that Cliff and I will help provide for TBH’s future through the Life and Legacy Program.

The TBH communityhas been such a significant part of our family’s life. The congregationalcommunity has celebrated with us during major life cycle events including

births, Bar Mitzvahs and weddings. Our Jewishcommunity has mourned with us, as well. Without the richness provided by TBH, I believe my life would be quite different.

I love knowing that when we pass on, our gift will help ensure the continuation of the Jewish community inOlympia. And perhaps inspire future generations togift in this way, as well.
