5 REASONSTO NOT DELAY
YOUR NEXT DENTAL EXAMBY: MARK BILLET, D.M.D.
1 ENJOY A GREAT VACATION
How exciting! You’ve put a lot of planning into a great summer getaway. But you did not plan ahead to prevent a dental emergency from ruining your trip? Particularly over a weekend, you may not get the immediate dental attention you need in a pinch.
To minimize the surprise factor, we recom-mend scheduling dental exams for the entire family before you take off . Now you will have something to smile about!
2. NO PAIN!
Warning! You usually won’t notice pain during the early stages of decay and gum disease. Th e truth is, if you do have decay or gum disease and delay treatment until you’re in pain, you’re likely to require more comprehensive treatment the longer you put it off .
Dental disease doesn’t usually go away on its own; the pain usually gets worse. So by coming in for a routine exam now, we can of-ten prevent minor problems from becoming major problems- BEFORE you ever experi-ence pain!!
3. SAVE TIME & MONEY!
Do the math. If you have a tiny cavity that requires a tiny fi lling, it will be a quicker fi x and gentler on your pocketbook now than if you wait until you need a large fi lling, a crown, root canal treatment or bridgework.
We’ve seen it all…and we can tell you that most major dental restorations started with a tiny problem that could have been COMPLETE-LY prevented or resolved early on. Imagine what you can do with the time and money you’ll save!!
4. PEACE OF MIND…
Maybe you’ve scheduled several appoint-ments but “fear” the worst and decide to can-cel; we can help you deal with your dental anx-iety. Even if it’s been a while since their last visit, we have actually sent patients away with no treat-ment needed aft er an exam.
It’s true!! Once we do a complete oral exam, we may determine that all you really need at this time is an in-offi ce cleaning! Routine exams, cleanings and home care instruction are the best ways to avoid anxiety, save money and reduce time in the dental chair!
5. “BOOST” YOUR CONFIDENCE!
A national survey showed that 83% of men and women rate “a beautiful smile” above beauti-ful eyes and other striking features. People notice a beautiful smile! However, they notice an un-sightly smile even more.
If you have decayed, darkened, yellowed, un-evenly spaced or missing teeth, chances are, you’re hiding your smile. Whether you’re 18 or 81, a whiter, brighter smile will help you feel better about yourself and can open doors of opportunity. Ask us how a smile makeover can help you look younger, healthier and more vibrant!

Balak sends messengers to Bilaam. He asks Bilaam to curse Bnai Yisrael. Bi-
laam responds that he must follow Hashem’s instructions. Hashem appears to Bilaam. He tells Bilaam that he should not accompany the messengers. He cannot curse Bnai Yis-rael. Th ey are a blessed people. Balak sends a second delegation. Again, Bilaam tells the messengers that he must wait for guidance from Hashem. Our pasuk contains Hashem’s response. He tells Bilaam that he may accom-pany the messengers. Bilaam leaves on his journey to join Balak. Immediately, Hashem is angry with Bilaam for deciding to accom-pany the messengers. An angel of Hashem appears to Bilaam. Th e angel threatens to kill him. Bilaam recognizes his mistake. He off ers to abandon his mission and return home. Th e angel tells Bilaam to continue on his journey. However, he cautions Bilaam not to deviate from the message he will receive from Hash-em.
This series of incidents presents a num-ber of problems. First, Hashem initially told Bilaam not to accompany the messen-gers. Then, Hashem apparently relented. He told Bilaam he can travel with the del-egation to Balak. How could Hashem al-ter His decision? Second, after Bilaam em-
barked on his journey, Hashem was angry. Why was He angry? He told Bilaam he could accompany the delegation! Bilaam had not disobeyed Hashem! Third, an an-gel was sent to Bilaam. The angel persuades him that he had not acted properly. Bilaam understood the message. He acknowledged his sin and offered to abandon his mission. We would expect the angel to accept this offer and to tell Bilaam to return home. In-stead, the angel told Bilaam to continue on his journey! What was Hashem’s objective in sending the angel? In the end, the an-gel encouraged Bilaam to continue on his journey!
Nachmanides off ers a brilliant but simple answer to these questions. He explains that Hashem never intended to forbid Bilaam from joining Balak. Hashem actually want-ed Bilaam to respond to Balak’s summons. Why? Nachmanides? basic premise is that Hashem wanted Bnai Yisrael to be blessed by this non-Jewish prophet. He wanted Balak to witness this event. Nachmanides makes four additional points:
WEEKLY PARSHA
PARSHAT BALAK 5769 Rabbi Bernie Fox
Reconciling Hashem’s various instructions to BilaamAnd Hashem came to Bilaam in the night. And He said to him: If these men have
come to call for you, arise and go with them. However, that which I will tell you, you should say.

1. Hashem initially forbade Bilaam from accompanying the messengers. Th e rea-son is found in Bilaam’s explanation of his mission. He told Hashem that he had been called upon to curse Bnai Yisrael. Hashem responded that this is a mission that Bilaam cannot fulfi ll. He should not accompany the delegation.
2. Hashem never altered His position. The second time He spoke to Bilaam, He told him that if the delegation has called upon him for assistance and counsel, he may accompany the messengers. He did not permit Bilaam to curse Bnai Yisrael. Hashem specifically told him he can only repeat His words. This was consistent with Hashem’s objective. Hashem wanted Bilaam to bless Bnai Yisrael in the pres-ence of Balak. This required Bilaam to re-turn with the delegation. However, it was made clear that he could curse Bnai Yis-rael.
3. Bilaam left on his journey. Hashem be-came angry. This was because Bilaam mis-lead the delegation by not indicating the essential terms of his agreement to follow them. The delegates assumed that Hashem had actually agreed to their request. This created a problem. Ultimately, Bilaam will not be permitted to curse Bnai Yisrael. As a result, the G-d of the Jews will appear quite capricious.1
4. The angel did not want Bilaam to return home. He demanded that Bilaam clearly state his limitations. Once the angel was convinced that Bilaam would tell Balak that he cannot curse Bnai Yisrael, the angel allowed him to proceed.
Th is insight can be applied to answer all of our questions. Hashem did not rescind His initial instructions to Bilaam. Th ese in-structions were to not accompany Balak’s messengers for the purpose of cursing Bnai Yisrael. In subsequently allowing Bilaam to accompany the second set of messengers, Hashem was not contradicting His previ-ous instructions; He was allowing Bilaam to provide Balak with counsel and guidance. Hashem’s anger was not prompted by Bi-laam’s decision to accompany Balak’s mes-sengers, but rather by his implied message that Hashem would permit him to curse His nation. Finally, the angel was not sent to Bi-laam in order to force him to abandon his mission. He was sent to demand that Bi-laam no longer mislead Balak by encourag-ing him to believe that Hashem would al-low His nation to be cursed. Once Bilaam accepted this condition, the angel permit-ted him to proceed.2
