Trotter’s first major

It happened at the Central Indiana Kennel Club show,Indianapolis, IN on February 11th. With this 3 point majorTrotter, ShoGun's Too Hot to Trot, now has 10 points. Here’shoping Trotter finishes in the near future.

Emmie has a new homeYou knew her as Remy, ShoGun's Sure Shot, but she hasfound a new home and a new name.

Ron and Joanne Turk lost their 14 year old ESS, Ellie, earlyin February. It was obvious to Ron that Joanne missed hervery much so he started looking for another. Since Joannehad previously showed interest in Clumber Spaniels, Ronchecked the Internet and found our website and saw we hadEmmie available. We made arrangements for them to visitbut Ron wanted to keep the visit a secret so he told Joannehe had to visit us as part of his job. She would come alongfor the ride.

When they arrived, a few of the dogs were running in theback and came running over to the fence to greet Joannewhile Ron came to the front door. Joanne soon followedRon with tears in her eyes. She came into the foyer and welet Emmie into the room. Joanne dropped to the floor andwelcomed Emmie into her arms, her long black coat sooncovered in white hair.

It seemed like a good match so we agreed that Ron andJoanne could take Emmie home for a week to determinewether she would fit in, so to speak. While the first few dayswere not without trials and tribulations, Emmie settled inand has now become a tried and true member of the Turkfamily. May they live happily together for many years.

This is One Lump You Can't Ignore

Story at-a-glance

Mast cells are found in tissues throughout the body, butthey are especially prevalent in the skin, respiratory and GItract. They play a role in allergic responses, non-allergicskin disease, wound healing and tissue remodeling. Theyalso increase stomach acid production.

When mast cells replicate in higher than normalnumbers, mast cell tumors can develop. These tumors canoccur in both dogs and cats, and while some are benign, most are malignant. Dogs usually develop a single tumor;cats tend to develop multiple tumors.

In cats, mast cell tumors of the skin are usually curablewith surgery. Internal tumors carry a much poorerprognosis.

In dogs, prognosis for recovery depends on where thetumor is located, its grade, and the treatment given.

If Your Pet is Overweight, Please Stay Away from These"Fixes" Story at-a-glance:

Pet food manufacturers continue to try convince consumerstheir too-heavy dogs and cats can lose weight by beingstuffed full of grains and fiber-filled pet food.

The goal of many pet weight management formulas is tocreate a temporary feeling of fullness in dogs and cats sothey won't beg for food. This takes the heat off owners whodon't want to say no to a begging pet.

One company has even gone so far as to invent a bizarreingredient that when added to pet food impedes digestionso the animal feels full longer.

And the gimmicks being employed! There's a 'mealreplacement' drink for cats that contains not a scrap ofanimal protein. And then there's the 'weight management'dog food loaded with seven different kinds of grains and aspecial 'fat-burning' ingredient.

Page 12: The ShoGun Reporter Vol 2 Iss 2

12

Parents of overweight pets would be wise to steer clear ofthe ever-evolving gimmicky 'weight loss' products appearingon store shelves. Almost without exception, these formulascontain as much if not more of exactly the type of food thatis making pets fat in the first place.

Saying No to Poor Quality Pet Food... Even When It'sRecommended by Your Vet Story at-a-glance:

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) hasadded a 5th "vital assessment" for veterinarians to use indetermining the health status of dogs and cats. The newestassessment is nutrition; the other four are temperature, cardio function, respiratory health, and pain.

The vast majority of integrative/holistic vets have alwaysdone nutritional assessments on their patients. Holistically-oriented practitioners understand the quality of the food ananimal eats plays a foundational role in the state of hishealth.

Page 13: The ShoGun Reporter Vol 2 Iss 2

13

Unfortunately, a major manufacturer of 'therapeutic'veterinary pet foods is working with the AAHA to get theword out about the need for vets to do nutritionalassessments. The pet food company has also increased itssales staff in order to pay more frequent visits to vet officesacross the country.

The ingredients in 'therapeutic' pet food formulas are oftenextremely poor quality and biologically inappropriate forcarnivorous cats and dogs.

The more you know about the nutrition your companionanimal needs to be optimally healthy, the less likely you'llbe to fall for a sales pitch for an inferior pet food – even ifthe sales person is your veterinarian.
