Remember the blackout of 2003? On Thursday, August 14, 2003, around 12:15pm (EDT) a sequence of events created a blackout, where over 45 million people in the Northeastern U.S and 10 million in Canada were affected. THE SECURITY MESSENGER Chairman’s Comments

By Chairman Chad Parris, CSC As the summer of 2013 winds down and we ramp up for the last part of the year, I’d like to say thus far, we’ve had an exception year for the chapter. With a great Annual Seminar and Exhibits in the books, a record attendance at the June meeting and a highly successful golf outing last month, we need to set our sights on the Chapter’s Annual Law Enforcement Ap-preciation luncheon in October. As I mentioned in my last message, Lynda Buel is prepar-ing for the this event now and has already communicated with hundreds of local law en-forcement professionals, sending the chapter invite for the luncheon at the Scioto Country Club on October 17th. More information will soon be coming, but it’s not too early to con-tact her if you are interested in a table sponsorship.

Speaking of golf outing, a special thanks goes out to Chuck Smith who took over coordination of the outing this year (thanks to a little arm twisting from me) and pulled off a great event at the Safari Golf Club at the Columbus Zoo. With just under 100 golfers in attendance, the weather could not have been more perfect for this really great course. Don’t forget to check out the pictures included in the newsletter, courtesy of LJD Photography.

One final comment. We will soon be looking for candidates for chapter leadership positions for 2014. As I will be stepping down as Chairman, Dan Schmelzer, our current Vice Chair will be stepping up to the Chairman position. If you have any interest in other appointments such as Vice Chair, Treasurer or Secretary, please let me know. All candi-dates will be placed on a ballot with the election held in November.

Be Safe,

Chad

Many of you know Elliot Boxerbaum and have heard of the battle he is fighting with ALS, also known as Lou Ge-hrig’s Disease, a deadly illness with no known cause or cure. It affects the motor neurons in a person's brain and spi-nal cord. When the motor neurons die, the muscles waste away. Gradually, a person is robbed of the ability to walk, speak, eat, and eventually breathe. Upon diagnosis, doctors give ALS patients only two to five years to live. Not long ago, you may have received an email asking you to support friends and family’s efforts in the Walk to De-feat ALS. If you feel so inclined, please consider donating to the cause or joining Elliot's friends and family in participating in the Walk to Defeat ALS® to do our part in the fight against Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The Special Ops team will be gathering between 9:30 AM and 11:00 at Fred Beekman Park—OSU Campus on September 29th. to begin the 2 mile walk. If you have ever joined a fundraising walk, you know that it is fun, inspiring, and a great way to get exercise. This walk is an opportunity to bring hope to ALS patients, to raise money for a cure, and to come to-gether with your friends and family to fight for something we care about. Would you consider joining our team? The more Walkers we have, the merrier, and the better for the mission of The ALS Association. We need people like you on our team.

Right now Elliot is doing pretty well. Although he has lost his speech and the ability to eat solid foods the disease has not yet had a significant impact on his extremities. He has lost a lot of weight, but this is now under control. Breathing can also be an issue if he does too much too fast. He is able to walk, drive, and do most other daily activities, although slower than before. Since he is not able to take phone calls, emails and text messages are a big part of his daily rou-tine. His new email address is [email protected]. He has a positive attitude and the support of his family and friends.

Remember, your contribution would make a big difference as we continue our quest to end ALS and offer care to peo-ple suffering. Your support is needed now more than ever before.

Every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes someone dies of the fatal illness. Somebody close to us could be one of them. I know that finding a cure for ALS is urgent, and that’s why I wanted to follow-up with you. I want to make sure that anyone willing to join me in the fight against ALS has the opportunity to do so.

Any contribution, large or small, truly makes a difference. Please consider donating to this very worthwhile effort by visiting the Team Special Ops webpage.

The year 2000 marked a meeting change. All breakfast and dinner meetings were eliminated with the exception of the Annual Spouses Night which remained as a dinner meeting. Going forward all meetings were luncheons. Also in 2000 it was announced that the Columbus Chapter was awarded Honorable Mention for the I.B. Hale Chapter of the Year Award in Group V. The Columbus Chapter Officers for 2000 were:

• Chairman Michael D. York, CPP –Northland Mall Security

• Vice Chairman Tim Beverly – Huntington Banks

• Secretary Sandy Hartman, CPP – Donatos Pizza

• Treasurer Michael A. Womer, CPP – Ohio Historical Society

A look at our guest speakers in 2000:

• The guest speaker for our January meeting was Edward G. Schwartz, CISSP, CISA, Chief Information Security Officer, Nationwide Insurance Enterprise. His program was titled “Information Security Solu-tions-Protecting Assets, Managing Risks.”

• Thomas P. Charles, State of Ohio Inspector General presented a program at the February meeting on how the Inspector General interacts with the state agencies. In his presentation he stated that he has seven em-ployees and three contract personnel who investigate 80-100 cases per year. He categorized the top types of claims they investigate as: harassment, mismanagement, steering contracts, abuse and misuse, bribery, improper practices, theft, falsification, and inadequate investigations.

• At the March meeting we had two guest speakers. Paul Kennedy and James Mako, with the Rickenbacker Port Authority presented a program of the security risks and issues they face on a daily basis.

• S. Woodruff (Woody) Bentley, Senior Manager, Corporate Security, Qwest Communications was the guest speaker at our April meeting. He presented a program on communication physical security issues.

• Our June guest speaker was scheduled to be Commander Larry M. Rod, City of Columbus, Division of Police, Training Bureau Commander. He was scheduled to give a presentation on the progress of the new Columbus Police Academy however, at the last minute he had to cancel. Unfortunately there was no guest speaker at the meeting.

• August was our Annual Golf Outing held at St. Alban’s Golf Club in Alexandria, Ohio. This year the chapter earmarked all proceeds from the event to go to the 10TV Family Fund. This fund is not one that 10TV uses for corporate giving purposes, but it’s one that is established by the employees of the company. The employees decide who will be the beneficiaries. Eighty-five golfers were at the event. The day started out with weather that looked a little threatening. The sky was gray with low hanging clouds, a strong breeze and temperatures in the low 60’s. Several golfers were heard remarking they were glad they brought their jackets. Fortunately the weather cleared in the afternoon with the sun coming out and tem-peratures warming to the upper 70’s. Perfect golf weather! Ryan Miller, Sports Reporter for WBNS 10TV played in the event representing the station for the 10TV Family Fund. The winning team was Pete LeMaster, Ron Brewster, Ryan Miller (WBNS 10TV), and TimStegner.

• The September meeting was our Annual Spouses Night. The guest speaker was Chuck White, Public Affairs Director, WBNS 10TV. He presented an interesting and sometimes humorous speech. He discussed the goals of the Family Fund, which was established in 1988. Proceeds from the Fund pro-vide food for needy central Ohio Families primarily during the holidays. The annual goal is to feed no less than 2,000 families. Since 1988, 276,000 families have received meals through the Family Fund. At this meeting Chairman Mike York presented Chuck White with a $2,000 check to the 10TV Family Fund which was the proceeds from our Annual Golf Outing which was held in August.

• After an emergency prevented Commander Larry M. Rod, City of Columbus, Division of Police, Training Bureau Commander from speaking at our June meeting he was invited back as the guest speaker for our Octo-ber meeting. In his presentation he mentioned the need for a larger training facility. The current facility was built in the 60’s when there were just 700 sworn officers. Current staff needing training is 2,200. In 1964 a new officer received 600 hours of training; in 2000 a new officer receives 1,800 hours of training.

• Franklin County Sheriff James A. (Jim) Karnes was our guest speaker at the November meeting. He provided the chapter an update on the operations within the Sheriff’s Office. He had just recently been elected to his third term in office. He was pleased to announce at the meeting that his office has in-stalled the first mobile data unit in cruisers which allows officers to check information directly from the car versus calling in to dispatch.

• At the December meeting, Chairman Mike York, CPP presented his “look back” at the chapter activi-ties during 2000. Mike was the first Chapter Chairman to bring technology into his “look back”. He gave his presentation using PowerPoint. Past Chapter Chairmen gave their presentations using notes on a legal pad. Thanks Mike, for raising the bar for the future Chapter Chairmen. Also at this meeting the elected chapter officers for 2001 were sworn in.

The following are some additional points of interest that took place in 2000:

• In January, Chapter member and 1999 Region X ASIS Regional Vice President (RVP), Fritz Weidner announced that for 2000 Chapter member Lynda Buel, CPP would be the new Region X RVP. Also, it was announced that Chapter member and Newsletter Editor Jack Mehan, CPP will be the Assistant Regional Vice President (ARVP) for CPP in Region X. Lynda will be the primary liaison between the chapters in Region X and ASIS International Headquarters. Jack will provide a resource for informa-tion about the CPP Program for the chapter CPP Liaisons. He will act as the intermediary between the Professional Certification Board and the Region.

• In January, Chapter Chairman Mike York, CPP published the goals and objectives for the chapter dur-ing 2000:

ο Increase meeting attendance by 15%.

ο Encourage and assist our members to publish articles of interest in security related journals and maga-zines such as Security Management.

ο Increase new memberships by 10%.

ο Promote the Chapter to State and Local Officials as a professional body of knowledge which can serve and assist them in matters of mutual importance.

ο Provide up to date cutting edge training to our members through our Business Crimes Forum, Mini Seminar, CPP review/study groups, and monthly meeting speakers.

ο Promote the CPP program to businesses and local human resource professionals.

• Chapter member and 1999 Region X RVP, Fritz Weidner presented chapter member and Newsletter Editor Jack Mehan, CPP with an award recognizing him for 20 years of service to the chapter. During those 20 years Jack has served in every elected office at least once, he has been the Newsletter Editor for the last 15 years, he was on the committee which pioneered the Business Crimes Forum series and has been involved in some way in all 20 BCF’s held so far. Jack was instrumental in getting the Chap-ter to establish the Scholarship Endowment Fund.

• In April, Chapter Chairman Mike York, CPP was promoted to Reserve Colonel in the Columbus Po-lice Reserve. Mike joined the Reserve in 1976.

• In September a report on the Columbus Chapter Scholarship Endowment was given by Charlie Herrera, CPP. It was reported that our endowment principal at the end of June 2000 was $28,631. Charlie reminded chapter members that we currently award three scholarships each year. The Colum-bus Chapter Scholarship ($1,500), The Joseph M.Martina, CPP Scholarship ($1,000 funded by The Huntington National Bank), and the Columbus Chapter Scholarship ($500).

This concludes my look at the year 2000. Next month I will profile the chapter in 2001.
