The Second Sunday of Easter April 8, 2018 + 9:00 and 11:00 A.M. Welcome to the Lord’s Day. Christian art sometimes shows a dove flying out of Jesus’ mouth, or a pair of keys crossed over each other. On the Resurrection of Christ’s Body Note how the Gospel writers are concerned to underscore the bodily nature

of Jesus' resurrection. In Luke, for example, the Emmaus disciples see Jesus sit down, take bread and break it (Luke 24.30). Later, the point is further emphasized: "Look at my hands and my feet," said Jesus, "and see who I am! Touch me and find out for yourselves. Ghosts don't have flesh and bone as you see I have" (Luke 24.39). Secondly, the Bible not only emphasizes the physical nature of Jesus' resur-rection but also the fact that His resurrection body was qualitatively different from his pre-resurrection one. In Luke's Gospel, the disciples on the road to Emmaus didn't recognize Jesus until He broke bread with them. In John's Gospel, despite the doors being locked, Jesus appeared to His disciples when they were together. In his classic novel, The Great Divorce, C. S. Lewis describes people in hell as "phantoms" in comparison with the "bright solid people" from heaven. The point Lewis is making is that the kingdom of God is infinitely more real, more substantial and more material than any kingdom without Him. Similarly, the appearance of Jesus in the upper room could be explained by the fact that He was more solid than the "shadowy" doors and walls of the room through which He walked.

PRELUDE

“I Know that My Redeemer Lives” … Bill Ingram

RINGING OF THE BELLS Please stand and turn toward the cross as it is carried into the sanctuary.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN “Awake, My Heart, with Gladness” green hymnal #129

GREETING P: Alleluia! Christ is risen! C: The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia! Alleluia! P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the

communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.

KYRIE P: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

P: For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to

the Lord.

The day of the Lord, or the Day of the Resurrection, is indeed the true day of every Chris-tian: for this reason it is called the Lord’s Day, because on that day the Lord as-cended trium-phant to the Father. And if this day is called by the pagans, we too are most ready to con-fess that to-day the Light of the Worlds has risen, that today the Sun of Justice has risen. ~ Jerome, 300s A.D.

P: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the holy Church, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

P: For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.

P: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

HYMN OF PRAISE

L: This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia.

Easter is the greatest feast, the feast of feasts, and is celebrated not only for a day or eight days but for 7 x7 days + 1! The figure seven stands for complete-ness. Seven times com-pleteness is completeness in superlative degree [and “plus one” goes even fur-ther!] The days after Easter are fifty, the sym-bol of highest joy, yes, of heavenly bliss. If dur-ing Lent we felt ourselves in captivity and sang no Alleluias, we now feel as though we were in heaven, where that heavenly song is al-ways heard . . . .

SALUTATION AND PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you.

. . . We are to be conscious of our true greatness as noble children in the service of the heav-enly Father and to have heaven in our hearts. The Liturgy sug-gests a num-ber of peculi-arities which naturally are observed only by the Chris-tian, who lives with the Church. One is the ancient custom of standing for prayer in-stead of kneel-ing. Stand-ing signifies the rising of the Lord and our rising with Him.

P: Let us pray . . . Almighty God, grant that we who have cele-brated the Lord’s resurrection may by your grace confess in our life and conversation that Jesus is Lord and God; through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

MUSICAL INTERLUDE “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” … John A. Behnke

FIRST LESSON Acts of the Apostles 4:32-35 32Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. 33And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 148 L: Hallelujah! | Praise the LORD ′from the heavens;* praise him ′in the heights. Praise him, all you an′gels of his;* praise him, ′all his host. C: Praise him, ′sun and moon;* praise him, all you ′shining stars.

The earliest New Testa-ment writ-ings, 1 and 2 Thessalonians and Gala-tians, which were written ten to fifteen years after the life of Jesus, all speak of His resurrec-tion. The Risen One will return as judge. Paul places the resurrection along with Jesus’ death as the basic foundation of Christianity: “For I deliv-ered to you as of first impor-tance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accor-dance with the Scrip-tures, that He was buried, that He was raised from the dead . . .”

Page 7: The Second Sunday of Easter - Zion Lutheran Church · brated the Lord’s resurrection may by your grace confess in our life and conversation that Jesus is Lord and God; through the

Praise him, heav′en of heavens,* and you waters a′bove the heavens. L: Let them praise the name ′of the LORD;* for he commanded, and they ′were created. He made them stand fast forev′er and ever;* he gave them a law which shall not ′pass away. C: Praise the LORD ′from the earth,* you sea monsters ′and all deeps; fire and hail, ′snow and fog,* tempestuous wind, do′ing his will; L: mountains ′and all hills,* fruit trees ′and all cedars; wild beasts ′and all cattle,* creeping things and ′winged birds; C: kings of the earth ′and all peoples,* princes and all rulers ′of the world; young ′men and maidens,* old and ′young together. L: Let them praise the name ′of the LORD,* for his name only is exalted, | his splendor is over ′earth and

heaven. He has raised up strength for his people and praise for all his ′loyal servants,* the children of Israel, a people who are near him. |

′Hallelujah!

. . . Paul makes it clear that this teaching of Christ’s res-urrection is not based only on the special revelation he received from Christ Himself but is verifi-able through conversation with eye-witnesses in-cluding the apostles and more than five hundred peo-ple who are able to give witness to the actual resur-rection of Jesus Christ (1 Cor 15:5-6). ~ Pr. David

All: Glory to the Father, and ′to the Son,* and to the ′Holy Spirit; as it was in ′the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. ′Amen

SECOND LESSON 1 John 1:1—2:2 1That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—2the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—3that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and in-deed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. 5This is the message we have heard from him and pro-claim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we con-fess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 2:1My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Please stand.

VERSE

GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 20th chapter.

19On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disci-ples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.” 24Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” 26Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbe-lieve, but believe.” 28Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me?

Jesus can now be recognized by his wounds rather than by his face. Thomas holds that the signs that confirm Jesus’ iden-tity are now above all his wounds, in which he re-veals to us how much he loved us. In this the Apos-tle is not mis-taken. ~ Joseph

Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30Now Je-sus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

P: The Gospel of the Lord.

NICENE CREED P: Let us confess the faith with one heart:

C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was cruci-fied under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scrip-tures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the for-giveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

There is a Word which is fundamen-tal for the church’s proclamation in all situa-tions until the end of time. That is the Word spo-ken by the witnesses of Christ’s res-urrection, who were commissioned with this proclamation by the risen Lord. This original testi-mony of Je-sus’ resurrec-tion is pecu-liarly related to the pro-phetic Word of the Old Testament. The content of the original apostolic tes-timony of Jesus’ resur-rection . . . .

. . . . combined with the Word of the Old Testament, is the church’s rule and guide for all times and for every proclamation. Since the death of the last commis-sioned wit-ness of Jesus’ resurrection every procla-mation of the church can be only a trans-mission of this Word which founds the church itself. In that sense, every procla-mation of the church since the death of the apostles is a word founded on the funda-mental Word. ~ Peter Brunner,

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

P: It is indeed right and salutary . . . we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

SANCTUS (“Holy”)

The teaching that the Lord’s Sup-per is Jesus’ own body and blood goes hand-in-hand with Easter and the resur-rection. If Jesus became a body, and is now risen in that body, then He is never present without His body. It’s not a suit that He can take on or off—He be-came flesh, and is now flesh still. Therefore, when He meets with His Church, He comes in the flesh. So His words are true; they mean what they say: “Take, eat. This is my body, given for you.” ~ C. Kenneth

Meadow, 2000s A.D.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed,

took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me.”

In the same way also he took the cup after the supper, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in my blood,

which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink of it, in remembrance of me.

THE LORD’S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy

kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our tres-passes, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

ACCLAMATION P: This is the feast of victory for our God. C: Alleluia!

Holy Communion is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which He joyfully gives to His Church to eat and to drink. This gift bestows tre-mendous benefits. His body and blood forgives ours sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation. The Lord therefore invites to His altar baptized Christians who trust that they will receive in Holy Communion all that He promises there: His body and blood, the forgiveness of sins, union with Christ and His Church, life, and salvation. Know that He gives it to you with great joy.
