Two weeks ago I spoke to those
who attended services on Shab-
bat about how the Torah portion
read that week called Vayetze is
a parasha that resonates with
most of us. Jacob is running
scared. He has left home in a
hurry, after his brother Esau has threatened to kill him.
Jacob himself is far from blameless; he manipulated his
brother into giving up his birthright, and disguised himself
to steal his brother’s blessing. Be that as it may, he thought
he was doing the right thing as is explained in Rabbi Jona-
than Sacks’ illuminating commentary. And now Jacob is
away from his home, on the road, and alone.
In the Talmud, we learn that the Maariv service, the even-
ing prayer is the service associated with Jacob, from a mo-
ment in this week’s portion: 28:11
He dreams an extraordinary dream, in which God gives
him the divine promise. Even so, he has his doubts; God
promises to be with him, and he replies, “If God will be
with me…” Jacob not only prays at night, but he experi-
ences what has been called the dark night of the soul. He is
afraid, and in need of comfort.
I know this was the feeling we all felt as news from Paris
was spreading all over the world. How a city of lights
could be darkened; how people seeking joy could be met
with death; how it feels like acts of terror are permeating
our world. And I thought about it a week after the Paris
attacks not only with the terrorist attack at that hotel in
Mali, but also at the Gush Etzion junction when 18-year-
old Ezra Schwartz from Sharon, Massachusetts was killed
by a Palestinian terrorist. Ezra was spending his gap year
before college at a yeshiva in Beit Shemesh. Early on that
Thursday, he and several classmates visited Gush Etzion,
south of Jerusalem, to deliver food to lone soldiers. As
Ezra and his friends waited in a traffic jam to leave the
area, an Uzi-wielding Palestinian, now in custody, killed
the American teenager and two men, leaving five other
yeshiva students wounded. On the Friday afternoon that I
had just finished reading about the death of Ezra, there
was a knock on my door. It was MLC member Karen
Soskin who so kindly was dropping off a lovely warm
challah that she had just baked. She noticed that I looked
sad and I told her that I had just read an article about Ezra
Schwartz. She then told me that her son Aaron (who grew
up at Mosaic Law and was active in USY) was Ezra’s
leader on USY on Wheels two summers ago. I asked her
for Aaron’s cell number and called him and spoke with
him before Shabbat. Aaron, who had spent the last day or
so being in touch with the members of the Wheels group
to offer them comfort, was so saddened by this tragic
event of someone he got to know very well for six weeks
on that USY bus tour around the USA. Aaron told me that
Ezra who could sometimes be mischievous, was loved by
everyone and that he would do anything to help anyone in
need. I told Aaron that I will keep him and the members
of the group he led in my thoughts and prayers.
As I processed all of these horrific events, I thought about
the Hashkiveinu prayer that we only say at night, and

which, because of that, is connected to Jacob’s journey as well as our own. This is
the (slightly modified) translation from our Siddur. I offer it to you in hope: that the
days ahead of us will be shaped by peace and consolation.
“Grant, O God, that we lie down in peace,
And raise us up, our Guardian, to life renewed.
Spread over us the shelter of Your peace.
Guide us with Your good counsel; for Your name’s sake, be our help.
Shield and shelter us beneath the shadow of Your wings.
Defend us against enemies, illness, war, famine and sorrow. Distance us from
wrongdoing.
For You, God, watch over us and deliver us. For You, God, are gracious and merci-
ful.
Guard our going and coming, to life and peace, evermore.
Blessed are You, Eternal our God, whose shelter of peace is spread over us, over all
Your People Israel, over Jerusalem, and over the entire world. Amen.
As we usher in the holiday of Chanukah on the evening of Sunday, December 6th,
my prayer is the lights of these candles will overshadow the darkness that we contin-
ue to see unraveling in the world. And may we see the day when evil will be ban-
ished from our midst and only goodness will prevail.

Judy joins me in wishing all of you a Chag Orim Samayach.

December Bat Mitzvot
Shalom! My name is Shoshana Kurzrock and I will celebrate my Bat Mitzvah
on Shabbat morning, December 5, Parshat Vayeishev. I am in the 7th grade at
Arden Middle School in the Honors Program. I enjoy hanging out with my
friends, singing , skiing, dancing, and playing soccer and softball. For my Mitz-
vah project I am working with the Susan G. Komen organization. This organiza-
tion is dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer and providing support for
those undergoing treatment. I am working to raise awareness. My family has
many relatives and friends coming from the Bay Area, Southern California, Las
Vegas, Seattle, Chicago and New Jersey! I would like to thank my tutor, Hester
Joelson, and my family for getting me ready for my Bat Mitzvah. I hope you can
make it, too.
My name is Sarah Velazquez. I will be called to the Torah as a Bat
Mitzvah on January 2, 2016. Many of you have seen me at Mosaic
Law since I was born. I was at Shalom School from pre-K through
fifth grade and am now in the IB program at Winston Churchill
Middle School. I enjoy musical theatre, reading, and playing violin.
For my Mitzvah project I am playing violin and singing for the resi-
dents at the Albert Einstein Center. I hope you will come to shul for
this special simcha.

Mosaic Law Archives,
CVHEN Archives, Collection and Repository
At the October MLC Board Meeting the MLC Board ap-
proved a request by CVHEN to join with MLC Archives,
and store their Holocaust collection of approximately 1700
books in what was previously known as Room 5 in the
school room / office building. Since then we, Liz Igra, the
founder and head of CVHEN and Judy Persin, the Archi-
vist for MLC have been busy clearing out room 5 in prepa-
ration for moving the CVHEN collection and stored MLC
Archives material on to our campus. When the collections
have been catalogued they will be available for research.
There will be room for the CVHEN collection to grow and
Liz Igra is accepting books and artifacts relating to the
Holocaust. At this time and going forward, MLC Archives
will be actively collecting memorabilia, photographs, and
documents regarding the congregation and the part it has
played in the Jewish community of Sacramento. Please
contact Judy Persin, if you have any old MLC artifacts you
would like to share with the Archives. That would include
but not be exclusive to, old newsletters, photographs,
minutes, agendas, plans, and programs. Photographs docu-
menting the changes in the use of the buildings would be
exciting to have, different events, and people who have
been involved. Please call Judy Persin, or Liz Igra if you
have questions or additions to the collections. (Both are
listed in the congregation directory.)
Loaves & Fishes - MLC volunteers at Loaves & Fishes
every third Monday of each month. You can come at
7:30am to help cook and/or at 10:45 to help serve. For
more info, contact the MLC office at (916) 488-1122.

sky, will make a return visit to KOH Library and Cultural
Center for a book reading and signing of his homage to his
grandfather, Chimen Abramsky, entitled, “The House of
Twenty Thousand Books”. Born in 1916, Chimen was an
extraordinary polymath and bibliophile who amassed a
vast collection of socialist literature and Jewish history.
For more than 50 years, Chimen and his wife, Miriam,

Moving Day, by Jonathan Stone. The Book Club is open

there is neither civil marriage, nor civil divorce. Only rab-

only with the full consent of the husband. This gripping
story depicts Viviane’s years’ long struggle to obtain that
consent.

welcome. Suggested donation $5. RSVP to Jolie Baron at

countries before the current school year begins. Each

money and expects to bear his/her share of the household
responsibilities as well as be included in normal activities
and lifestyles. If you are interested in opening your home
